Cost guides for jobs in Cheshire

In Cheshire, these guides explain what moves a trade price and which figures come from a dated public source. A guide is listed here once it is published, and any price we cannot date is marked needs source.

What these guides are for

In Cheshire, the useful question is rarely "what is the average price". It is "what should this quote contain, and which numbers on the internet can I actually trace". Each guide on this page sticks to that question. It says what usually sits inside a price, what can push it up or down, and how to read two quotes side by side.

A guide is allowed to print a figure only when that figure comes from a dated public UK source, named on the guide. If the source is a council schedule from another county, the guide says so. It does not relabel a Surrey handy-person rate as a Crewe contractor's price.

Guides you can read now

GuideWhat it helps you compareWhat it will not do
Plumber costHow a plumbing price is built, and how to read a written quoteInvent an hourly rate
Roof repair costWhat moves a roofing price, including access and materialsInvent a repair total
Locksmith costDated hourly examples, and which lock-change prices are needs sourcePretend a national example is your door
Fencing costOne dated panel-and-post figure, height rules, and needs source linesPrice a whole Cheshire boundary
Electrician costWhat changes an electrician's price in Cheshire: the job, how they charge, parts, access and VATPrint electricians' own rates
Driveway costWhat changes a driveway or paving price: area, surface, digging out, drainage and wasteGive a price list
House cleaner costWhat changes a house cleaner's price: hourly or fixed, how often, extras and VATGive a price list

The plumber and roof guides explain the shape of a quote without a price list. The locksmith and fencing guides add the public figures that could be dated on 14 October 2026, and they leave the rest marked needs source. The electrician guide names official charges that can change the total, including council building control and the chargepoint grant, and it does not print electricians' own rates. The driveway and house cleaner guides give no price list and show how to read a written quote. Read the guide that matches the job, then ask local businesses to price that job.

How a figure earns a place

Three rules sit behind every guide:

  1. The number is copied from a public UK page, not from memory and not from a competitor's article.
  2. The guide says who published it and the date it was read.
  3. If that bar is missed, the cell says needs source.

Citizens Advice still applies to the quote you receive: a quote is a fixed price, an estimate is a rough guess, and it is worth having more than one written quote before you decide [S1]. A cost guide does not replace those quotes. It tells you what to look for when they arrive.

Some guides also point at official rules that are not prices. The Planning Portal's fence pages are an example: height and permission are not the same thing as the cost of the panels [S2]. A guide can explain that difference without inventing a per-metre rate.

Cheshire first

The opening of each guide talks about Cheshire before it talks about anywhere else. Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach are the towns QuoteZila is starting with. A figure from another part of the country can still be useful if it is labelled, because it shows what a published schedule looks like. It is not a local quote. If you are pricing a job in Sandbach, the businesses you compare should be businesses that cover Sandbach.

Town pages and service pages stay separate from these guides. This index does not try to list every town. It lists the national guides that are actually published.

How to use a guide with a quote

Take the quote you have and the guide for that trade. Tick off the lines the guide says to expect: labour, materials, waste, any call-out, and VAT if the business is registered. If a line is missing, ask. A missing line is a common reason one quote looks lower than another.

Then get at least one more written quote, and where you can, the three Citizens Advice suggests [S1]. Give each business the same description and the same photos. Compare the answers, not a headline that left half the job out.

QuoteZila is free for customers and local businesses [QZ1]. Describe the job and the town, and up to five matched local businesses can reply [QZ2].

Honest status: QuoteZila is new. We're starting in Cheshire, beginning with Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach, and growing area by area. Anyone in the UK can still post a job or register a business. How fast you get quotes depends on how many local businesses have joined near you. Businesses can register and receive jobs straight away. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire.

This page is general information, not professional or legal advice. QuoteZila does not check Gas Safe, WaterSafe, NFRC, NICEIC or other registrations against the register on your behalf: look them up yourself.

Questions about cost guides

What is a QuoteZila cost guide?

It is a page about how a price is built, written for someone in Cheshire who is about to ask for quotes. It names the public sources it uses and the date they were read. Where a price could not be dated from a public UK source, the page says needs source instead of guessing a number.

Why do some prices say needs source?

Because a figure without a dated public source does not belong on the page. Trade blogs often disagree, and a single undated range can make a fair quote look high. Needs source means ask businesses for written quotes, not that the work is free or that a price does not exist.

Are these guides quotes for my house?

No. Even a dated figure is someone else's published number, often for a different county or a different job. A council schedule and a local contractor are not the same seller. Use the guide to see which lines to compare, then get written quotes for your own postcode.

Can I ask for quotes from these pages?

Yes. Describe the job and the Cheshire town. Up to five matched local businesses can send quotes. QuoteZila is free for customers and local businesses. How many replies you get depends on how many businesses have joined near you.
