What changes the cost of tree pruning?

In Cheshire, the cost of tree pruning depends on the size and type of tree, the kind of pruning, how the tree surgeon reaches the branches, what is underneath, and whether the cuttings are taken away. We print no price, so compare quotes that describe the same work on the same trees.

What tree pruning covers

Tree pruning is the selective cutting of branches to make a tree safer, smaller, lighter or better shaped, while keeping it alive and healthy. It is different from felling, where the tree comes down, and from hedge cutting, which is usually lighter work over a longer run.

Most pruning of anything larger than a small garden tree is done by a tree surgeon who climbs the tree on ropes, or works from a mobile elevated platform. That is skilled work at height, and the time it takes depends on the tree, the cuts and what is underneath.

QuoteZila is starting in Cheshire, with Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach among the first towns. This guide prints no price. It explains the kinds of pruning, what changes the cost and the rules that apply.

Types of pruning

  • Crown reduction. Reduces the overall height and spread of the canopy by cutting branches back to suitable growth points.
  • Crown lift. Removes lower branches to raise the canopy, for example to clear a path, a drive, a roof or a road.
  • Crown thin. Removes a proportion of smaller branches throughout the crown to let more light through without changing the overall shape.
  • Deadwooding. Removes dead, dying or broken branches that could fall.
  • Pollarding. Cuts back to the same points every few years on trees that have been managed this way before.
  • Cutting back from a building. Clears branches touching a roof, gutter, wall or window.

Ask each tree surgeon to describe what they will cut in plain words, such as how much will come off and from which side. "Trim the tree" can mean very different jobs.

Protected trees

Before any pruning, check whether the tree is protected. GOV.UK says a tree covered by a Tree Preservation Order needs the council's written consent before it is cut down, topped, lopped or uprooted [S1]. For a tree in a conservation area that has no order, the council must be told in writing 6 weeks before the work [S1].

Tree surgeons often handle the application for you, but ask who is doing it, and do not let work start until the council has answered.

Nesting birds

Spring and summer are when many birds nest, and nests are protected by law. GOV.UK says it is illegal to intentionally take, damage or destroy a wild bird's nest while it is being used or built [S2].

That does not mean no pruning can happen in those months, but the tree should be checked first, and work should stop or be put off if there is an active nest. Ask the tree surgeon how they check. Booking non-urgent pruning outside the main nesting months avoids the problem.

Safety and who to hire

Tree work at height is dangerous, with chainsaws, ropes and heavy branches all in play. HSE says at least two people must be present during aerial tree work, and one of the ground team must be competent and equipped to carry out an aerial rescue without delay [S3].

That is one reason a tree surgeon brings a team, and why a one-person quote for climbing work is worth questioning. This guide gives no DIY steps for pruning at height. Ask each tree surgeon about their training, how they will reach the branches, and their public liability insurance.

What makes a pruning job bigger

  • Size of the tree. A taller, wider tree takes longer to climb and has more to cut.
  • Type of pruning. A heavy crown reduction is more work than removing a few dead branches.
  • What is underneath. A greenhouse, a conservatory, a road or power lines mean branches have to be lowered on ropes rather than dropped.
  • Access. A tree at the back of a terraced house, with no side access, means every branch has to be carried through.
  • Climbing or a platform. A platform can be quicker where it can get close, but it needs firm, level ground and a way in.
  • Waste. Chipping branches on site and taking the chippings away adds time and disposal.
  • Number of trees. Several trees in one visit can share the setup.

Tree pruning in Cheshire

When you post the job, include photos of the whole tree and the part you want cut, what is underneath, and how a team would get in. A tree surgeon covering Crewe, Nantwich, Sandbach and the villages around them can then say what kind of pruning suits it and whether a permission is needed.

Your council, Cheshire East or Cheshire West and Chester depending on where you live, can tell you whether a tree has a Tree Preservation Order or is in a conservation area. Anyone in the UK can still post a job or register a business on QuoteZila.

What good pruning should and should not do

Good pruning removes branches back to a suitable point, such as a side branch or the collar where a branch meets the trunk, so the tree can seal the wound. It takes off only as much as the tree can cope with, and leaves a natural shape.

Be wary of anyone offering to cut a large tree back to stumps across the top, sometimes called topping, unless it is a pollard managed that way for years. It can leave weak regrowth and decay. Ask each tree surgeon how much they will take off, where they will cut, and why. A clear answer is a good sign.

What to have ready before you ask for quotes

  • photos of each tree from a distance and close up
  • what you want: smaller, lighter, clear of the roof, safe from dead branches
  • what is underneath and around the tree
  • the access route for a team and equipment
  • whether the tree is protected, if you know
  • whether you want logs left or everything taken away
  • your postcode, and whether the work is urgent

How to compare tree pruning quotes

Check each quote for:

  1. The trees named and the work described in plain words.
  2. How the branches will be reached and lowered.
  3. Who will apply for any permission.
  4. How nests will be checked.
  5. What happens to the waste.
  6. Whether VAT is included, and whether it is a fixed price.

Citizens Advice suggests getting written quotes from at least three traders and asking to see insurance policies, checking they will not run out before the work is finished [S5].

Jobs you might post

These are examples, not taken from real job posts. "Large sycamore overhanging the back of the house. Please quote for a crown reduction and taking the waste away." Or: "Crown lift on two trees along the drive so vans can get past." Or: "Remove dead branches from an oak at the bottom of the garden. It may be in a conservation area."

Questions about tree pruning costs

How much does tree pruning cost?

This guide does not print a price. The height and spread of the tree, the type of pruning, how the branches are reached, what is underneath and whether the waste is taken away all change the total. Ask tree surgeons to describe exactly what they will cut.

What is the difference between a crown reduction and a crown lift?

A crown reduction makes the whole canopy smaller by cutting branches back to suitable points. A crown lift removes lower branches to raise the height of the canopy above the ground, a path or a road. They are different jobs, so ask which one each quote covers.

Do I need permission to prune a tree?

You may. GOV.UK says a tree covered by a Tree Preservation Order needs the council's written consent before it is topped or lopped, and that for a tree in a conservation area the council must be told in writing 6 weeks before the work. Check with your council first.

Can trees be pruned in spring and summer?

They can, but nesting birds are protected. GOV.UK says it is illegal to intentionally take, damage or destroy a wild bird's nest while it is being used or built. Ask the tree surgeon to check the tree before they start, and to stop if there is an active nest.

Can I cut back branches from my neighbour's tree?

Talk to your neighbour first, and agree what will be cut and what happens to the branches. Check with your council whether the tree has a Tree Preservation Order or is in a conservation area before any work, and ask for advice if you are unsure where your rights stop.

Should I prune a large tree myself?

Not if it means working off the ground. Tree work at height is a job for a trained tree surgeon, and this guide gives no DIY steps. HSE says at least two people must be present during aerial tree work, with one able to carry out an aerial rescue.

Does QuoteZila check the tree surgeons who quote?

No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.
