What changes the cost of tree stump removal?

In Cheshire, the cost of tree stump removal depends on the size of the stump and its roots, whether it is ground out or dug out, how easily a machine can reach it, and whether the chippings are taken away and the hole filled. We print no price, so compare quotes for the same stumps and finish.

Why remove a tree stump?

A stump left after a tree is felled can be a trip hazard, get in the way of mowing, block a new patio or path, and in some cases send up new shoots. Some people leave stumps in place as a seat, a planter or a home for insects, and that costs nothing. When the space is needed, though, the stump has to go.

Stump removal is often a separate job from felling the tree. A tree surgeon who fells a tree may not include the stump unless you ask, so check what the felling quote covers.

QuoteZila is starting in Cheshire, with Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach among the first towns. This guide prints no price. It explains the methods, what makes one job bigger than another, and what to ask.

Ways to remove a stump

  • Grinding. A stump grinder chips the stump away below ground level with a toothed wheel. This is the most common method for garden stumps. Machines range from small walk-behind units that fit through a gate to larger tracked machines.
  • Digging out. The stump and its main roots are dug round and cut free, sometimes with a winch or a digger. This removes more root but makes a larger hole and more mess.
  • Leaving it to rot. A stump will break down slowly on its own. Drilling holes and keeping it damp can help, but it takes years.
  • Treating it. Some products are sold to kill a stump and stop regrowth. Follow the label exactly, and ask a tree surgeon if you are not sure whether it suits the tree.

For most gardens, the choice is between grinding and digging out. Your plans for the spot usually decide it.

What makes a stump job bigger

  • Width. A wider stump takes longer to grind and produces more chippings.
  • Type of wood. Some hardwoods are slower to grind than softer timber.
  • Roots. Large surface roots spreading across a lawn may need grinding too.
  • Height. A stump cut low is quicker to grind than one left at knee height, though a taller stump can be easier to dig out with leverage.
  • Access. A narrow side gate, steps or a long carry limit which machine can be used.
  • Number of stumps. Several stumps in one visit can be done together.
  • Depth. Grinding deep enough for new planting or paving takes longer.
  • What is nearby. Walls, fences, paths, drains and cables close to the stump mean slower, more careful work.

The tree and the law

The stump itself is rarely protected, but if the tree is still standing, the rules on felling apply first. GOV.UK says a tree covered by a Tree Preservation Order needs the council's written consent before it is cut down, topped, lopped or uprooted [S1]. The same page says that for a tree in a conservation area without a TPO, the council must be told in writing 6 weeks before the work [S1].

If you are not sure whether a tree is protected, ask your council before anyone starts work.

Pipes, drains and cables

Tree roots and drains often meet. Old clay drains with loose joints can let roots in, and grinding close to a drain or a buried cable needs care. Tell the contractor about anything you know of, and ask how they will check.

Ofwat says most, but not all, pipes within an individual property boundary are the owner's responsibility [S2]. If roots have got into a drain, a drainage firm or plumber may be needed as a separate job.

A business must register for VAT when its taxable turnover goes over £90,000 [S3]. Ask whether each total includes VAT.

After the stump has gone

Grinding leaves a hole filled with a mix of wood chippings and soil. Chippings left in the hole will settle as they rot, so the ground may sink a little over the following months. If you want to lay turf straight away, ask for most of the chippings to be taken out and the hole topped up with soil.

If you are planning a patio, shed base or path over the spot, tell the contractor. Loose chippings are not a stable base. For more on paving, see the driveway cost guide.

Stump removal in Cheshire

A tree surgeon or garden contractor covering Crewe, Nantwich, Sandbach and the villages nearby will want to know the width of each stump, where it is in the garden, and the width of the way in. A photo of the stump with something for scale, such as a spade, helps a lot.

If the stump is in a front garden next to a pavement, mention it, because the contractor may need to protect the path. Anyone in the UK can still post a job or register a business on QuoteZila.

Regrowth and nearby trees

Some trees send up new shoots from the stump or roots after felling. Grinding below ground level usually stops shoots from the stump itself, but shoots can still come up from roots further out. If that happens, ask the contractor what they recommend, rather than reaching for a strong product straight away.

Take care with stumps next to other trees, hedges or shrubs you want to keep. Grinding close to their roots can damage them, and some trees share root systems underground. Tell the contractor which plants you want to protect, and ask how close they will grind to them.

What to have ready before you ask for quotes

  • the number of stumps and roughly how wide each one is
  • photos of each stump, with something for scale
  • the width of the narrowest point on the route in
  • what you plan to do with the space afterwards
  • whether you want chippings taken away and the hole filled
  • any drains, pipes or cables you know of nearby
  • your postcode and when the work could be done

How to compare stump removal quotes

Check each quote for:

  1. Method, and the depth they will grind or dig to.
  2. Whether surface roots are included.
  3. What happens to the chippings.
  4. Backfill with soil or turf.
  5. How they will check for drains and cables.
  6. Whether VAT is included, and whether it is a fixed price.

Citizens Advice suggests getting written quotes from at least three traders and asking to see their insurance policies [S4]. Grinding throws chips and stones, so public liability insurance is worth asking about.

Jobs you might post

These are examples, not taken from real job posts. "Grind out two conifer stumps in the back garden and take the chippings away. Access through a side gate." Or: "Large stump in the middle of the lawn, about knee height. Please quote to grind it out and fill with topsoil." Or: "Dig out an old stump where we want to put a patio."

Questions about tree stump removal costs

How much does tree stump removal cost?

This guide does not print a price. The width of the stump, the type of wood, the roots, the access for a grinder, the number of stumps and whether chippings are taken away all change the total. Ask tree surgeons to price the same stumps and the same finish.

What is stump grinding?

Stump grinding uses a machine with a toothed cutting wheel to chip the stump away below ground level. It leaves a hole full of wood chippings and soil. The roots further out usually stay in the ground and rot down over time.

Is it better to grind a stump or dig it out?

Grinding is usually quicker and disturbs less of the garden. Digging out removes more of the root system, which can matter if you are building or laying a patio there, but it is heavier work and leaves a bigger hole. Ask which the contractor recommends for your plans.

How deep does a stump grinder go?

It depends on the machine and what you plan to do with the spot. Grinding just below the surface may be enough for turf, while planting a new tree or laying paving may need deeper grinding. Tell contractors your plans and ask what depth they will reach.

Do I need permission to remove a tree stump?

The stump itself is rarely the issue, but the tree may be. GOV.UK says a tree covered by a Tree Preservation Order needs the council's written consent before it is cut down or uprooted. If the tree is still standing, check before it is felled.

Will grinding damage pipes or cables?

It can if they run near the stump. Tell the contractor about any drains, water pipes or cables you know of, and ask how they will check before grinding. Ofwat says most, but not all, pipes within a property boundary are the owner's responsibility.

Does QuoteZila check the businesses who quote?

No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.
