- Ask for photos of previous work, especially if you want a specific finish.
- Homes built before the 1960s may have old lead-based paint. A careful decorator will mention it before sanding.
- For exterior work, agree what happens if the weather delays the job.
- Ask whether they carry public liability insurance.

Frequently asked questions about painters and decorators
How many coats of paint will my walls need?
It depends on the surface and the colour change, but one or two finish coats over primer or a mist coat is common. Agree the number of coats in your written quote.
Should I buy the paint myself?
Either way can work. Agree in writing who supplies it, the brand and the finish, so that the quote is clear.
Do decorators move furniture?
Some do, some do not. Agree up front who moves furniture and covers floors, and say in your job description if you have heavy or delicate items.
