What does latex paint mean on a UK tin?

Latex is a word some tins and imports use for a water-based decorative paint, and it is not the name of a category in the UK paint regulations. Match the tin to the job by the coating the regulations actually name, such as a matt wall coating, a primer or a floor coating.

Last reviewed:

Why does the word latex not settle the choice?

A tin bought in Crewe, Nantwich or Sandbach can say latex, emulsion, or both, and still be the wrong coating for the room. The label question is the same in a Cheshire decorating shop as anywhere else. Anyone in the UK can post a decorating job or register.

The useful question is not "is this latex?" It is "what did the maker design this coating to go on?" A lounge wall, a new plaster ceiling, a cement step and a wooden door are not one surface. A single word on the front of the tin does not answer all four.

Whether to paint over wallpaper is a separate decision about the paper. This page is only about the word on the label and the categories the law uses.

Which names do the paint regulations actually use?

The regulations say paints and varnishes, for this purpose, are products listed in named sub-categories, excluding aerosols. They are coatings applied to buildings, their trim and fittings, and associated structures, for a decorative, functional or protective purpose [S1].

Sub-categories that matter in a house include these, in the regulations' own words [S1]:

Sub-category on the statuteWhat the schedule says it is for
Matt coatings for interior walls and ceilingsCoatings designed for application to indoor walls and ceilings
Glossy coatings for interior walls and ceilingsCoatings designed for indoor walls and ceilings, defined in the schedule as a separate sub-category from matt coatings [S1]
Coatings for exterior walls of mineral substrateCoatings designed for outdoor walls of masonry, brick or stucco
Interior and exterior trim and cladding paintsOpaque coatings for trim and cladding on wood, metal or plastic, including undercoats
PrimersCoatings with sealing or blocking properties, designed for wood or for walls and ceilings
One-pack performance coatingsCoatings for a special performance, and the list includes floor coatings for wood and cement floors

The schedule also sets a gloss figure that separates the matt sub-category from the glossy one. This page does not print that figure. If you need it, read paragraph 1(2) of the schedule itself [S1]. Latex is not one of the names in that list.

What should you read on the tin besides the brand?

Turn the tin around. The front name is marketing. The back is the instruction.

  • Where it goes. Walls, ceilings, wood, metal, floors, outside masonry. If your surface is missing, do not guess.
  • The finish. Matt, silk, soft sheen, gloss. A ceiling that should not shine wants a flat finish. A door that gets handled wants something tougher. That is a practical choice, not a ranking.
  • New plaster or already painted. Some instructions change for bare plaster. Painting new plaster follows that difference. This page does not invent a thinning recipe.
  • The VOC line. VOC content is the mass of volatile organic compounds, in grams per litre, in the product ready to use. Mass that reacts during drying and becomes part of the coating is left out of that content [S2].
  • How many coats the maker describes. Follow that, rather than a habit from another tin.

The regulations apply to those relevant products when they are to be used in any part of the United Kingdom. Northern Ireland also has a customs-territory condition, which this page does not set out [S3].

Keep the room aired while you coat and while it dries. That is ordinary care, not a claim about a particular brand.

Where do people go wrong with the word?

  • Buying a wall coating for a step. A cement doorstep is closer to the floor-coating words in the one-pack sub-category than to a matt wall coating [S1]. Doorstep coatings stays on that surface.
  • Coating a shiny paper because the tin says it is tough. The paper may still refuse the coating. The wallpaper decision is on painting over wallpaper.
  • Using an exterior masonry coating indoors, or the reverse. Exterior mineral-substrate coatings are designed for outdoor walls of masonry, brick or stucco [S1]. Read the outdoor or indoor line.
  • Treating a primer as a finish. A primer is defined as a coating with sealing or blocking properties [S1]. It is not the coat you stop at unless the tin says that same product is also the finish.
  • Assuming every water-based tin is safe on new plaster the day the plasterer leaves. Ask the plasterer about drying, and follow the tin. No number of days is printed here.

How do you tell a decorator what you want?

Say the room, the surface and the finish you want to look at. You do not have to say latex. "Lounge walls, already painted, flat matt, pale colour" is clearer than "some latex". If the wall is new plaster, say so. If it is a step, say it is a step.

Citizens Advice says a quote is a fixed price and an estimate is only a rough guess, and that you should get the quote in writing rather than rely on a verbal quote [S4]. Some traders charge for quotes, so ask about this first [S4]. Comparing quotes helps you decide if you are getting a fair price [S4].

Jobs you might post

These are examples, not taken from real job posts.

  • "Front bedroom, walls already painted. Please use a matt interior wall coating and name it on the quote. I do not mind whether the tin says emulsion or latex."
  • "New plaster in a dining room, plasterer says it is dry. Please follow the tin for bare plaster and say what the first coat is."
  • "Concrete front step, not the front door. Please use a coating designed for a cement floor that people walk on, and say so in the quote."

Posting the decorating job

Name the rooms and the surfaces, and add a photo of the tin if you already bought one. Up to five matched local businesses can send a quote [QZ2]. QuoteZila is free for customers and local businesses [QZ1].

Honest status: QuoteZila is new. We're starting in Cheshire, beginning with Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach, and growing area by area. Anyone in the UK can still post a job or register a business. What else are people asking?

Is latex the same thing as emulsion?

Shops often sell water-based wall paint as emulsion, and some labels say latex as well. The regulations do not use either word as a category name. They define matt coatings and glossy coatings for interior walls and ceilings, primers, and other named coatings. Use the words on your tin, and the job the maker describes, rather than treating latex and emulsion as a legal pair.

Can I use a wall coating on a floor or a step?

Not just because both tins look white. The regulations list floor coatings, including for wood and cement floors, inside one-pack performance coatings, which is a different sub-category from matt coatings for interior walls and ceilings. A doorstep or a cement floor needs a coating designed for that surface. Doorstep coatings is that question.

What does the VOC line on the tin mean?

VOC content means the mass of volatile organic compounds, expressed in grams per litre, in the formulation of the product in its ready to use condition. Compounds that react during drying to form part of the coating are not part of that content. The regulations apply to the listed paints and varnishes when they are to be used in any part of the United Kingdom. This page does not print a limit for a particular tin.

Should I thin the first coat on new plaster?

This page does not print a mixing ratio. New plaster is a different surface from a wall that has been painted before. Follow the instructions on the tin you will actually open, and ask the plasterer when the surface is dry enough to coat. Painting new plaster is the sequence for that job.
