What should I check before hiring a roofer?
General guidance, whichever way you find someone:
- Ask how they will work safely at height, including scaffolding or edge protection on larger jobs.
- Ask whether they carry public liability insurance and ask to see the certificate.
- Look for membership of a recognised trade body, such as the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC), and check it directly with them. It is a useful extra check, not a guarantee.
- Get a written quote naming the materials, the extent of the work and what happens to old materials.
- Ask for before-and-after photos of the work, and what guarantee is offered.
- Be cautious about unsolicited callers who say your roof urgently needs work. Take your time and get more than one quote.

What should I put in my roofer job description?
- Say what you can see: missing tiles, stains on a ceiling, a leak, damp in the loft.
- Say whether it is a pitched or flat roof, and the type of covering if you know it.
- Attach photos taken safely from the ground or from inside the loft. Please do not climb onto the roof.
- Say how urgent it is and whether any storm damage might be an insurance claim.

It is sensible to compare quotes, making sure each covers the same work and materials so that you are comparing like with like.
