How much does gutter repair cost in Cheshire?
In Cheshire, a gutter repair price depends on the length, the material, the access from the ground and whether a joint is the whole job. This page does not print a figure, because we could not find two dated public sources that agree on one.
Last reviewed:A length of gutter is not a national tariff
In Cheshire, gutter repair means a joint, a bracket, a length, an outlet or a downpipe that you want priced, not a guess at every house on the street. The runs people describe from Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach are the starting point for this guide. People elsewhere in the UK can post a job as well. QuoteZila is new, so how many quotes you get depends on how many businesses near you have joined [QZ5].
Say which elevation you mean: the front, the side alley, the rear, or a bay you can point at from the pavement. A price for one joint on a bungalow is not a price for a two-storey run over a conservatory. If you do not know the material, say "not sure" rather than guessing plastic or metal.
What the height rules change about the price
The Health and Safety Executive says work at height means any place where, if precautions were not taken, a person could fall a distance liable to cause personal injury [S1]. A fall through a fragile roof is one of the examples on that page [S1]. Gutter work is often at height. The same page says to avoid work at height where it is reasonably practicable to do so, and to do as much as possible from the ground [S1].
It also says not to rest a ladder against weak upper surfaces such as glazing or plastic gutters [S1]. That is a prohibition, not a method, and this guide will not add rungs, angles or timings. The Work at Height Regulations 2005 apply to employers and to people who control how work at height is done [S1]. When you hire a firm, ask who is controlling that work and how they will reach the gutter without using the gutter as a support.
The introduction is on the HSE work at height pages [S1].

A quote that assumes a ladder against a plastic gutter is a quote to question, not a quote to accept because it is shorter. Ask for the access to be a line of its own: from the ground, from a tower, or from another way they name. If they will not name it, you cannot compare their price with a firm that will.
What changes the visit
| Line on the quote | Why two prices can differ |
|---|---|
| Which run | Front, side, rear, or a bay |
| Material | Plastic, metal, or not sure |
| Joint only, or a new length | A leak at one collar is not a whole elevation |
| Downpipe, hopper, shoe | Vertical pipe is not the gutter |
| How they reach it | From the ground where they can [S1] |
| Fascia or brackets | Rotten timber is a different line |
| Who takes the old pieces | Waste is not assumed |
| VAT | Threshold £90,000 [S4] |
None of those rows is a Cheshire tariff. They are the lines that stop a joint being compared with a new run.
What you can see from the ground
Walk the path. Do not climb. Note:
- drips on the wall, or a stain under one joint
- a gutter that has slipped out of line, if you can see that from below
- a downpipe that is loose, split, or discharging onto the path
- plants growing in the gutter, if you can see them without leaving the ground
- whether a conservatory, a porch or a neighbour's fence blocks the base of the wall
A photo taken from the garden is enough. Do not prop a board against the fascia. Do not ask a neighbour to "just look" from their landing. If water is coming in through a ceiling, say that in the first line. That may be a roof covering as well as a gutter, and the two should be priced apart. Roof repairs are the covering. This page is the channel at the edge.
Reading the paper
Citizens Advice says not to rely on a verbal price, because a quote is a fixed price and an estimate is only a rough guess [S3]. Try to get written quotes from at least 3 traders [S3]. Some traders charge for preparing a quote, so ask about that before anyone visits [S3]. After you accept, the quote is a binding agreement [S3].
Ask the paper to show a fixed total, a breakdown, how long the price lasts, whether VAT is included, and when the price can rise [S3]. A business must register for VAT when taxable turnover for the last 12 months goes over £90,000, or when it expects to go over £90,000 in the next 30 days [S4].
If an advert says there is no call-out charge, the Advertising Standards Authority says that claim is fair only when you are not charged for travelling to the premises, the initial diagnosis, or any other charge before the work is agreed [S5]. A look from the ground can be the whole of the first visit. Ask whether you pay if you then decide not to book the repair.
Where a deposit cannot be avoided, Citizens Advice says not to agree more than 25%, and to take a receipt [S3]. Pay by card rather than cash for the whole repair before anyone leaves the ground [S3]. Ask to see insurance and check it covers the dates of the visit [S3]. You can offer to buy a short length of gutter yourself instead of handing over a deposit, which is the option Citizens Advice describes [S3].
If the job grows into the roof
GOV.UK's building regulations approval page lists examples that can need approval, including replacing roof coverings [S2]. A gutter is not that example. If the firm says the fascia, the soffit or the tiles have to come off, ask for a second total. You might need approval for works that are not on the list, and you should check with a building control body when you cannot tell [S2]. You do not have to arrange approval yourself if you use someone on a competent person scheme [S2]. The page is on GOV.UK [S2].

Guttering installers are the trade page for a firm who will quote a run. Gutter repair near you is about how to describe the house, not about a tariff. Roofers and builders are live trade pages. Handymen may quote a small ground-level job. Ask all of them the same access question.
Brackets, outlets and the bit you can see from a window
A repair quote often hides the bracket. The gutter can look continuous from the garden while the screw into the fascia has pulled out. Ask whether the price includes new brackets, and whether a soft fascia is extra. If they need to replace a board, that board is not a gutter joint. Put it on its own line so you can ask a builder about the timber without accepting a gutter total that grew in the van.
Outlets are the other quiet extra. Water can leave the gutter through a fitting you cannot see well from below. A price to reseal a joint does not include a new outlet unless it says so. A downpipe clip at the first floor is not a shoe at the bottom. Name the one you can see, and ask them to name the ones you cannot.
If leaves are the only thing you can see, ask for a clear-out line and a repair line. A clear-out from the ground, where they can do it that way, is the visit the height guidance is pushing firms toward [S1]. It is still not a price this page can print. Do not accept a full replacement solely because the gutter looks full from a bedroom window. Ask them to say what is actually broken.
Jobs you might post
These are examples, not taken from real job posts.
- One joint over the back door drips. You have not used a ladder. Ask for a repair of that joint only, with any new length priced separately.
- A downpipe has come away at the shoe and empties onto the path. Ask the quote to say whether the shoe, the downpipe, or both are included, and how they will reach the top.
- The gutter looks full of leaves from the garden. Ask whether the price is a clear-out from the ground or a repair. Do not ask anyone to rest a ladder on the gutter [S1].
How to compare two repair quotes
Put the same elevation side by side, then the same lines: joint, length, downpipe, access, waste. Citizens Advice says a price much lower than the others may mean the work is not the same work, or that the trader does not have the skills [S3]. Be wary if they will not write it down [S3].

Questions about gutter repair
How much does gutter repair cost in Cheshire?
Length, material, how the run is reached and whether the fascia is included all change the job. Compare written quotes that name the same run and say the work is done from the ground where that is possible, so one joint is not set beside a whole elevation.
Can I do the repair from a ladder?
This page does not describe a ladder method. The Health and Safety Executive says work at height should be avoided where it is reasonably practicable, and that as much work as possible should be done from the ground. It also says not to rest a ladder against weak upper surfaces such as glazing or plastic gutters. Ask the firm how they will reach the run.
Is a leaking joint the same price as a new run?
Only if the quote says so. A single joint, a slipped bracket and a full length of gutter are different lines. A downpipe, a hopper and a shoe at the bottom are different again. Ask for each one separately so a small repair is not compared with a whole elevation.
Does a gutter repair need building regulations approval?
Replacing a gutter is not one of the examples on the GOV.UK building regulations approval page. That page says you might need approval to replace roof coverings, and that you could need approval for works that are not listed, so check with a building control body if you cannot tell. If the job is only the gutter, say that. If it becomes the roof covering, ask about that separately.
What if the quote is a daily rate?
Citizens Advice says a daily rate, rather than a fixed total, can lead to the work being strung out, so if time is the basis ask for the days and hours in writing. A short repair should still say how long the price lasts and whether VAT is included.
Does QuoteZila check roofers or gutter firms?
No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.
Can I post a gutter repair?
Yes. Say which side of the house, what you can see from the ground, and add a Cheshire postcode. Up to five matched local businesses can quote. QuoteZila is free for customers and local businesses.
