What coating is meant for a doorstep?
A doorstep needs a coating designed for the material it is made of and for feet, rain and dirt, which is a different job from painting the front door or the hall wall. Read the tin for floors or for exterior masonry, and do not assume a wall coating will do.
Last reviewed:What is a doorstep, for the person buying the tin?
In Cheshire, a front step in Crewe, a tiled porch in Nantwich or a concrete threshold in Sandbach is still a small surface that takes boots, rain and frost. QuoteZila is starting here, and anyone in the UK can post the job. The step is not the door, and it is not the path.
Look at what the step is made of before you choose a tin.
- Concrete or cement. Common on postwar houses. It is a mineral floor that people walk on.
- Stone or quarry tile. The coating has to grip a hard surface, and a thick film can look wrong on old stone.
- Timber. A wooden tread is closer to exterior wood than to a wall. The tin should say wood, and it should say outside.
- Tile that is already glazed. Paint may not grip a glaze. The decorator should say whether they will key it, and what the tin allows.
What latex means on a tin explains why a wall coating and a floor coating are different categories. This page stays on the step.
Which regulation names come closest?
The paint regulations do not contain the word doorstep. They do name coatings you might be choosing between [S1].
| What you are coating | The schedule's nearest words | What that does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Indoor wall | Matt coatings for interior walls and ceilings: coatings designed for indoor walls and ceilings [S1] | That the same tin belongs on an outside step |
| Outside brick or render | Coatings for exterior walls of mineral substrate: coatings designed for outdoor walls of masonry, brick or stucco [S1] | That a horizontal step is the same as a vertical wall |
| A floor people walk on | One-pack performance coatings, which include floor coatings for wood and cement floors [S1] | That every floor coating is made for frost and rain |
| Wood trim | Interior and exterior trim paints: opaque coatings for trim on wood, metal or plastic [S1] | That a tread and a door frame are the same wear |
VOC content, if you are comparing tins, means the mass of volatile organic compounds in grams per litre in the product ready to use. Compounds that react while the coating dries and become part of the film are not counted in that content [S3]. The regulations apply to the listed products when they are to be used in any part of the United Kingdom [S4].
How do you prepare the step without wrecking it?
This is preparation, not a recipe for a brand.
- Sweep grit off. Paint over dust and the coating comes away with the dust.
- If the old coating is flaking, the loose bits have to go or the new coat will flake with them. Do not grind a step you think might be an old textured finish stuck with something else. A step is rarely that, but if you are unsure, stop and ask.
- Let a wet step dry. A coating on a damp surface fails at the edges first.
- Mask the door, the frame and any drainage slot. Paint in the slot can hold water against the door.
- Keep people off it for as long as the tin says. This page does not print a drying time.
If the step is cracked, or the concrete is breaking up, paint will not stitch it. A builder may need to repair the step before anyone coats it. See our builders page as well as painters and decorators.
What should a written quote include?
Citizens Advice says not to rely on a verbal quote, and to get it in writing [S5]. After you say yes to a quote it is a binding agreement, whether or not it was written down, so the writing is what you can check later [S5]. An estimate is only a rough guess [S5].
Ask the quote to name:
- the step only, or the step and the door
- the material of the step, as the decorator sees it
- the product, and the line on the tin that says floor, masonry or exterior wood
- whether loose old coating will be removed
- whether the price includes keeping the household off the step while it cures
- what happens if it rains on the day
A much lower quote is a reason to read the lines, not a reason to celebrate. Citizens Advice also says comparing written quotes helps you judge whether the price is fair [S5].
Jobs you might post
These are examples, not taken from real job posts.
- "Concrete front step only, one stride deep, not measured. Please coat it with a product designed for cement floors outdoors. The front door is already finished and is not in this job."
- "Quarry tiles on a porch step. Please say whether your coating will grip a glaze, or whether the tiles should be left."
- "Timber threshold is bare and grey. Please treat it as exterior wood, not as a wall, and name the coating."
Posting the step
Add a photo of the step dry and, if you can, after rain, so the decorator can see the fall of the water. Up to five matched local businesses can send a quote [QZ2]. QuoteZila is free for customers and local businesses [QZ1].
Honest status: QuoteZila is new. We're starting in Cheshire, beginning with Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach, and growing area by area. Anyone in the UK can still post a job or register a business. How fast you get quotes depends on how many local businesses have joined near you. Businesses can register and receive jobs straight away. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire.

What else are people asking?
Is a doorstep the same job as the front door?
No. The door is wood, composite or metal, and it is a piece of joinery. The step is often concrete, stone, quarry tile or a worn timber tread. They take different coatings, and a quote that says only front entrance can hide which of the two is included. Ask for the step as its own line.
Can I use the wall emulsion I already have?
A matt coating for interior walls and ceilings is designed for indoor walls and ceilings. A doorstep is outside, it gets wet, and people stand on it. That is closer to a floor coating, which the same schedule lists inside one-pack performance coatings, including coatings for cement floors. If the step is masonry, exterior coatings for mineral substrates are designed for outdoor walls of masonry, brick or stucco. The step is not named. Read the tin.
What should I do about a step that is slippery when wet?
Say so in the quote. Some floor coatings are made with a texture, and some people add a grit. This page does not name a grit or a product. Ask the decorator what the tin says about surfaces that stay wet, and look at the step in the rain before you decide the job is finished.
Do I need permission to repaint a step?
The Planning Portal says you do not usually need to apply for planning permission for repairs, maintenance and minor improvements, and it gives repainting window and door frames as an example. A step is not that example. Listed buildings need listed building consent for any significant works, inside or out. If the step is part of a listed entrance, ask the council before you grind or coat it.
Does QuoteZila check the decorators?
No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.
This page is general information, not professional or legal advice. QuoteZila does not check Gas Safe, WaterSafe, NFRC, NICEIC or other registrations against the register on your behalf: look them up yourself.
