How many mist coats should go on new plaster?

Many decorators start with one mist coat and add a second only if the plaster is still soaking up paint in patches. The paint maker's instructions on the tin are the guide to follow, and the wall itself shows you when it is sealed.

Why does new plaster need a mist coat at all?

Fresh plaster is very absorbent. Full-strength emulsion painted straight onto it gets sucked in quickly, which can leave it patchy and, in some cases, poorly stuck to the surface. A mist coat is a first coat of emulsion thinned with water, so it soaks into the plaster and seals it, giving the next coats something even to sit on.

The question of how many to apply comes down to how thirsty your plaster is, and what your paint maker says on the tin.

QuoteZila is starting in Cheshire, with Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach among the first towns, and anyone in the UK can post a job. This page helps you judge the number of coats, whether you paint yourself or ask a decorator.

How do you judge whether one coat was enough?

Let the first mist coat dry completely, then look at the wall in good daylight, from an angle as well as straight on.

Signs the wall is ready for top coats:

  • The colour is even across the whole wall.
  • There are no dull, darker or blotchy patches.
  • The surface feels uniform when you run a hand lightly across it.
  • Filled holes and patched areas look the same as the rest of the wall.

Signs a second mist coat would help:

  • Some areas look darker or flatter than others, where they soaked up more paint.
  • Patched or freshly skimmed sections look different from older plaster next to them.
  • The paint looks thin and grainy, with the pink of the plaster showing through strongly.

What makes some walls need more than one?

A few things make plaster soak up more paint than usual:

  • Very fresh plaster that has only just dried enough to paint.
  • A mix of surfaces, such as new skim next to old plaster or filler.
  • Bare plasterboard joints taped and filled next to a skimmed wall.
  • A very thin first coat, mixed with more water than the tin suggests.

On a wall like that, a second thin coat over just the thirsty areas, or the whole wall, can save you a third full-strength coat later.

What comes after the mist coats?

Once the wall is evenly sealed, the top coats go on at full strength, as the tin directs. The tin says how many top coats it expects, and deep colours or patchy walls can need more. Light sanding between coats with a fine paper removes nibs, but keep the dust down. HSE says regularly breathing construction dust can cause diseases including asthma [S2]. Use a damp cloth to wipe the dust away, open windows and wear a dust mask if you sand a lot.

Ceilings take longer and are harder on the neck and shoulders. HSE says work at height includes work above ground or floor level where a fall could cause injury [S3], so use a stable platform rather than a chair, or ask a decorator to do the ceilings.

For how much water to add to the paint, see mist coat ratio, which covers thinning and mixing.

What should you ask a decorator?

Ask each decorator the same questions:

  • How many mist coats and how many top coats are in the price?
  • Which paint will you use for the mist coat, and which for the top coats?
  • Will you fill and sand before the mist coat, or after?
  • Does the price include ceilings, woodwork and protecting floors?
  • How long should the plaster dry before you start?

Questions about mist coats

Is one mist coat enough on new plaster?

Often, yes. If the first coat has gone on evenly, dried to a uniform colour and the plaster has stopped looking thirsty, you can move on to the full-strength coats. If it dried patchy, with darker areas soaking it in, a second mist coat can help even it out.

How do I know when the wall is sealed?

Look at it in daylight once the mist coat is dry. A sealed wall has an even colour with no dull or blotchy patches, and a drop of water sits on the surface briefly instead of vanishing straight in. Patches that still drink paint need another thin coat.

Can too many mist coats cause problems?

Extra thinned coats rarely damage the wall, but they add time and paint without adding much. Follow the paint maker's instructions on the tin, and once the surface is evenly sealed, move on to the full-strength top coats.

Should a decorator's quote say how many coats they will apply?

Yes. Citizens Advice says a quote should include a breakdown of the work and the materials needed. Ask the decorator to write down the number of mist coats and top coats, and the paint they will use.

Does QuoteZila check the decorators who quote?

No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.
