How do you caulk a skirting board?
Run a thin bead of paintable decorator's caulk into the gap between the top of the skirting and the wall, smooth it with a damp finger or tool, and let it dry before painting. Fill large gaps first, and use a sealant meant for movement where the floor meets the skirting.
Last reviewed:Why caulk a skirting board at all?
Walls are rarely perfectly flat, and skirting boards are straight. Along the top edge there is almost always a thin, uneven gap where the two meet. Painted over, that gap shows as a dark, wavy shadow line.
Decorator's caulk fills it. It is a soft, paintable filler in a tube that stays slightly flexible once dry. A neat bead turns the shadow into a crisp, straight line between the wall colour and the skirting paint.
This page is about sealing the gaps. If the skirting itself is loose or coming away, it needs fixing first. Our skirting board adhesive and gluing skirting boards pages cover that.

Which product should you use?
Decorator's caulk. Usually acrylic and water-based. It is made to be painted and suits the gap along the top of the skirting, the joins at corners, and the gaps round door frames.
Flexible or low-shrink caulk. Some caulks are sold as more flexible or less likely to crack. They can suit skirting on a timber floor or in a new house where the walls may move a little as they dry.
Silicone sealant. Made for wet areas and joints that flex a lot. It stays rubbery, but most is not designed to take paint. Keep it for baths, showers and sinks.
Wood filler. For nail holes, dents and open mitres in the skirting itself. It sands to a hard finish, unlike caulk.
Read the label on any tube before you use it. HSE explains that hazard pictograms, a diamond with a red border, alert us to a hazardous chemical that might cause harm to people or the environment [S1]. If the tube carries one, follow the safety advice on the label.
How do you caulk a skirting board neatly?
- Clean and dust the gap. Vacuum along the top of the skirting and wipe off dust. Caulk does not stick well to dust.
- Fill any deep gaps first. A wide or deep gap needs filling in stages, or packing with a filler, before the final bead.
- Cut the nozzle small. A small hole at an angle gives a thin, controlled bead. You can always cut it bigger.
- Run a steady bead. Keep the gun moving at an even speed along the joint, pushing caulk into the gap rather than laying it on top.
- Smooth it straight away. Run a damp finger or a smoothing tool along the bead to press it in and remove the excess. Wipe your finger often.
- Clean up as you go. Wipe any smears off the wall and skirting with a damp cloth before they dry.
- Let it dry, then paint. Check the tube for the drying time before painting. Paint the skirting and the caulk line together for a clean finish.
Work in lengths you can smooth before the caulk starts to skin.
What about the gap at the floor?
The bottom edge is different. The floor and the skirting can move against each other, especially on a suspended timber floor.
On a timber floor, a gap at the bottom of the skirting can let in draughts from the void under the floor. The Planning Portal says a regular tube sealant, such as silicone, can be used to fill gaps between floorboards and skirting boards to stop draughts, and warns not to block under-floor airbricks in outside walls [S4]. Our suspended floor page explains why that ventilation matters.
Where carpet is going down, ask the fitter before you seal the bottom edge. They usually tuck the carpet under the skirting.
On a hard floor, a neat flexible bead can keep dust out of the gap. Use a product the tube says suits movement.
When is it a job for a decorator?
Caulking is a normal part of preparing a room for painting. Our painters and decorators page covers the trade. If the skirting needs replacing rather than sealing, carpenters and joiners fit new skirting, and skirting board replacement explains what changes that quote.
The Planning Portal says internal decorating, such as wallpapering, new skirting boards or painting, will not normally need approval under the building regulations [S2].
Citizens Advice suggests getting written quotes from at least 3 different traders before you decide on one [S3]. Ask whether the quote includes caulking, filling and sanding, or only painting.

Questions about caulking skirting boards
Can I use silicone instead of caulk on skirting?
Not where you want to paint. Ordinary silicone sealant is not made to be painted, so emulsion and gloss tend to pull away from it. Silicone suits wet areas such as a bath edge. For a painted skirting, use a caulk the tube says is paintable.
Why has my caulk cracked?
Usually because the gap moves more than the caulk can stretch, or the bead was too thin over a wide gap. Skirting on a suspended timber floor, or on a new wall that is still drying, can move with the seasons. Rake out loose caulk, fill any deep gap first, and run a fresh bead.
Should I caulk along the bottom of the skirting too?
It depends on the floor. On a hard floor the bottom gap can be sealed to stop dust and draughts. Where carpet will be fitted, the fitter tucks the carpet under the skirting edge, so ask them first. Never seal over airbricks or vents.
