Can you use a magic eraser on painted walls?

A melamine foam eraser can lift scuffs and crayon from many painted walls, but it works like very fine sandpaper. On flat matt paint it can leave a shiny or pale patch, so test it somewhere hidden first and use light pressure.

What is a magic eraser?

"Magic eraser" is the everyday name for a white sponge made of melamine foam. You wet it, squeeze it out and rub. It lifts marks that ordinary sponges leave behind, such as scuffs from shoes and bags, pencil and crayon, and grubby fingerprints around light switches.

It does that because the foam is slightly abrasive. Under a microscope it is a mesh of very fine, hard strands. In practice it behaves a little like very fine sandpaper. That is what makes it good on marks, and also what makes it risky on some paint.

Which walls can take it, and which can't?

How a wall reacts depends mostly on the finish of the paint.

  • Wipeable or scrubbable emulsions, satin, eggshell and gloss. These harder finishes usually cope well with gentle rubbing. Woodwork in gloss or satin is often the easiest place to use one.
  • Flat matt emulsion. This is where problems show. Rubbing can polish the surface so the patch looks shiny next to the rest of the wall. On deep colours it can also leave a pale or chalky mark where the top of the paint has worn away.
  • Fresh paint. Paint that has only just dried is still soft. Leave it to cure properly before scrubbing anything.
  • Wallpaper, bare plaster and textured finishes. These can tear, scuff or soak up water. Avoid them unless the maker says the surface is washable.

If you don't know what paint is on the wall, assume it is matt and treat it gently.

How do you use one without spoiling the paint?

  1. Try plain water and a soft cloth first. Many marks lift with a damp cloth and a drop of washing-up liquid.
  2. Test in a hidden spot, such as behind a door or a piece of furniture. Let it dry, then look at it from an angle in daylight.
  3. Wet the foam and squeeze it almost dry. Too much water can run down the wall and leave drip lines.
  4. Use light pressure and small circles, only on the mark itself. Don't scrub a wide area.
  5. Wipe with a clean damp cloth to take away residue, then let it dry before you judge the result.

Stop as soon as the mark has gone. Carrying on is how a small scuff becomes a polished patch the size of a hand.

When is it time to repaint instead?

Some marks are better covered than cleaned:

  • marks that have already been rubbed into a shiny patch
  • stains that come back through the paint, such as water marks or smoke
  • large areas of scuffing on a hallway or stairs wall
  • old paint that is flaking or powdery when touched

Touching up a single spot rarely blends in on matt paint, even with leftover paint from the same tin. Repainting the whole wall, corner to corner, usually looks better. If several rooms need doing, a painter and decorator can quote, and the cost of painting a room explains what changes the price. If the marks are on kitchen walls, choosing kitchen wall paint covers finishes that are easier to wipe.

What about marks when you move out of a rented home?

Moving out is when most people reach for a magic eraser. It's worth going carefully, because a polished patch can be more obvious than the scuff.

Citizens Advice says a landlord or letting agent can't take money from your deposit for reasonable wear and tear, which means things that gradually get worse over time, such as paintwork [S1]. It also suggests taking photos of the property when you leave and getting a check-out inventory, which could include the condition of the walls [S1]. GOV.UK says that if you are in a dispute with your landlord, your deposit stays protected in the deposit scheme until the issue is sorted out [S2].

If you'd rather hand it over, our cleaners page covers the trade, and end of tenancy cleaning explains what is usually included. Ask whether wall marks are part of the job before you book.

Jobs you might post

These are examples, not taken from real job posts.

  • "Hallway and stairs walls have scuffs at bag height. Would like a quote to repaint, matt finish."
  • "Moving out of a two-bed flat at the end of the month. Need an end of tenancy clean including marks on the walls where possible."
  • "Living room wall has a shiny patch where a mark was cleaned. Please quote to repaint that wall."

Citizens Advice says a quote is a fixed price, while an estimate is just a rough guess, and suggests getting written quotes from at least 3 different traders [S3].

Photos of the walls in daylight help a decorator or cleaner see what they are pricing. Your job goes to up to five matched local businesses [QZ2]. QuoteZila is free for customers and local businesses [QZ1].

Questions about magic erasers on walls

Why did a magic eraser leave a shiny patch on my wall?

The foam is mildly abrasive. On flat matt paint, rubbing smooths the surface so it reflects more light than the paint around it. Sometimes it removes a thin layer of paint too. A light touch-up with the same paint is often the only fix.

Is a magic eraser safe on wallpaper?

It is risky. Many wallpapers have a printed surface that rubs off easily, and the water can lift seams. Check the wallpaper maker's cleaning advice, and test on an offcut or a hidden corner first.

Will cleaning marks get my tenancy deposit back?

It can help, but a damaged patch can look worse than the mark. Citizens Advice says a landlord can't take money from a deposit for reasonable wear and tear, such as paintwork that gradually gets worse over time. Take photos when you leave.

Does QuoteZila check decorators and cleaners?

No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.
