How do you plan a wallpapering job?

Plan wallpapering by deciding the paper, the lining, the first length and the surfaces that are in the job, and write that down before anyone pastes. The hands-on hanging of one straight wall is a different guide, and so is taking old paper off.

What is planning, if it is not hanging?

Hanging is a length, a brush and a join. Planning is the list that makes two quotes describe the same room. If you skip the list, one hanger prices a bare wall and another prices stripping, lining and a feature wall, and the numbers cannot be compared.

The straight-wall sequence is the hanging. Taking old paper off is the stripping. Choosing a design is the look. Painting what is already there is the option to do none of this. This guide is the plan that sits between the decision and the paste.

Planning a room in Crewe is a list of walls, paper and what stays painted, and the same list applies in Nantwich or Sandbach. Write that list down, in Cheshire or further afield, before any paste is mixed. Anyone in the UK can post the job.

What do you decide before you buy rolls?

Buy after the plan, not before, or you will own paper for a wall you meant to paint.

  • Which walls. All four, one feature wall, or the alcoves only. Write it down.
  • What is on them now. Paint, lining, vinyl, woodchip, or bare plaster. If you do not know, say so. Stripping may be step one, and it may stop if a textured coating appears.
  • Whether to line. Lining paper is a plain layer. It is not the finish. It earns its place on a wall that is flat enough to paint but not flat enough for a thin printed paper. A plasterer may be the better spend if the wall is hollow or crumbling. Plasterers are that trade.
  • The match. Straight, drop or free, from the label. A large drop match on a short wall can look like a mistake even when it is hung correctly. Hold a sample in the room before you commit the whole order.
  • The light. A join that is invisible head-on can throw a shadow from a side window. Plan the first length so the joins are not the thing the window points at.

How do you set the order of the room?

A sensible order, before any tub is opened:

  1. Repair what paper will not hide. Cracks, damp and loose plaster are not pattern problems.
  2. Strip, if the plan says strip, and let the wall dry. No day count is printed here.
  3. Line, if the plan says line, and let that dry too.
  4. Mark where the first finish length will sit, on the wall people see, on a vertical you can check.
  5. Hang the finish. That action is the hanging guide, and only for a wall you can reach from the floor.
  6. Trim and wipe. Then stop. Do not start the ceiling because you have paste left.

Ceilings and high halls are out of a floor-level plan. HSE says work at height means work where, if precautions were not taken, a person could fall a distance liable to cause personal injury, and that you are working at height if you work above ground or floor level [S1]. Walking up and down a permanent staircase is not work at height on that page [S1]. Decorating while you are above the floor is the part to leave out of a home plan. Duties sit on employers and on those who control the work, such as building owners who may contract others to work at height [S1]. HSE: work at height. QuoteZila is not affiliated with this organisation.

What belongs in the written quote?

Citizens Advice says a quote is a promise from the trader to do the work at an agreed price, that you should not rely on a verbal quote, and that an estimate is only a rough guess [S2]. After you say yes, it is a binding agreement, whether or not it was written down, so the writing is what you can check later [S2].

Ask for these lines, in the hanger's words:

  • rooms and walls, listed
  • strip, line, or hang only
  • the product name of the finish paper, if you are supplying it, and who buys paste
  • pattern match, so they have seen the label
  • ceilings in or out
  • furniture, floors and waste
  • what they will do if the plaster fails once the old paper is off

A single line that says "wallpaper lounge" is not this list. Our painters and decorators page is the trade that usually hangs paper.

What if the house is listed?

The Planning Portal's doors and windows page is about openings, not paper. For a listed building, that same page says you will need listed building consent for any significant works, internal or external [S3]. Wallpaper can be significant if it is part of the historic interior, and it can be ordinary if it is a recent lining. This guide cannot tell those apart. Ask the council's conservation officer before old finishes come off a listed room. Do not treat a modern rental as a listed house, and do not treat a listed house as a modern rental.

Jobs you might post

These are examples, not taken from real job posts.

  • "Lounge, four walls, currently painted and flat. Please line only if you think the printed paper needs it, and say which. Paper not bought yet. No ceiling."
  • "Feature wall only, chimney breast, paper supplied, free match. Please hang that wall and leave the other three painted. The breast is at floor level."
  • "Hall and stairs. Please quote the hall walls you can reach from the floor as one line, and the stairs as a separate line with the access you need. I do not want one blended price."

Posting the plan

Attach a photo of each wall and of the label if you have already bought paper. Up to five matched local businesses can send a quote [QZ2]. QuoteZila is free for customers and local businesses [QZ1].

Honest status: QuoteZila is new. We're starting in Cheshire, beginning with Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach, and growing area by area. Anyone in the UK can still post a job or register a business. How fast you get quotes depends on how many local businesses have joined near you. Businesses can register and receive jobs straight away. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire.

How to hang wallpaper on a straight wall is the paste and the length in your hands, and this page is the plan you write down before anyone pastes.

What else are people asking?

Is lining paper always needed?

No. Lining is a way to give a rough or patched wall a flatter surface, and to give the finish paper something consistent to grip. A sound, flat, already painted wall may not need it. A wall full of filler and old joins often does. Ask the hanger to say yes or no in the quote, rather than assuming.

Where should the first length go?

Put the first length on the most seen plain wall, on a line you can check is vertical, and keep the awkward cuts for corners and for the space behind a door. A join that lands in the middle of a chimney breast is what people stare at. This planning guide does not paste that length. Hanging the length does, for a wall you can reach from the floor.

How do I allow for pattern?

Read the label for the repeat and for whether the match is straight, offset or free. A pattern that drops on each length uses more paper than a free match, because you waste a slice of each roll to line the design up. Count lengths only after you know that match. This page does not print a rolls-per-room figure.

Should the ceiling be in the same plan?

Treat a ceiling as a separate decision. HSE says you are working at height if you work above ground or floor level. Walking up and down a permanent staircase is not included. Many people paper walls and paint ceilings. Say which you want, so the quote does not silently include a ceiling.

Does QuoteZila check paperhangers?

No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.

This page is general information, not professional or legal advice. QuoteZila does not check Gas Safe, WaterSafe, NFRC, NICEIC or other registrations against the register on your behalf: look them up yourself.
