What changes the cost of an outside tap replacement?
In Cheshire, the cost of an outside tap replacement depends on whether you are swapping a worn tap or running a new pipe through the wall, how far the tap is from the supply, and the check valve and frost protection it needs. We print no fitting price, so ask plumbers to quote for the same position and parts.
Last reviewed:Replacing a tap or adding a new one
There are two quite different jobs that people call outside tap replacement. One is swapping an old, dripping or seized tap for a new one on pipework that is already there. The other is fitting an outside tap where there has never been one, which means drilling through the wall and running a new pipe from the cold supply inside.
The first is usually a short visit. The second takes longer, because the plumber has to find a sensible route for the pipe, make a clean hole through the wall, fit valves inside and seal everything up.
QuoteZila is starting in Cheshire, with Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach among the first towns. This guide does not print a price. It explains the parts of the job that change the total, and the double check valve WaterSafe says the regulations specify [S1].
The check valve rule
An outside tap is often connected to a hosepipe, and a hose left in a pond, a bucket or a puddle can draw dirty water back into the pipe if the pressure drops. That is called backflow.
WaterSafe says the water fittings regulations specify that outside taps should always have a double check valve to prevent backflow [S1]. The same article says homes built since 1999 typically have an inline double check valve built into the supply pipe to the outside tap, and that homes built before that usually have one built into the tap [S1].
When you ask for quotes, ask each plumber where the check valve will be and whether the tap they are fitting includes one. If you are replacing an old tap, ask whether a double check valve is already there and whether they will keep it or fit a new one.
Where the tap goes and how the pipe gets there
For a new tap, position matters more than anything else.
- Distance from the supply. The usual source is the cold pipe under the kitchen sink or in a utility room. A tap on the wall right outside is a short run. A tap at the far end of the house is a long one.
- What the pipe passes through. Cupboards, boxing and floor voids can hide a pipe run. Exposed pipe across a finished room may need boxing in.
- The wall. Brick, block, stone and timber frame each take a different approach to drilling. A cavity wall needs the hole sleeved and sealed.
- Height. Most people want the tap high enough to fit a watering can or a bucket underneath.
Tell each plumber where you want the tap and send a photo of the outside wall and the pipe inside it is likely to come from.
Frost protection
Outside taps and the pipe running to them sit in the cold, so frost is the main reason they fail. A few things help, and they are worth asking about at the quote stage:
- an isolating valve inside, so the outside section can be turned off and drained before winter
- insulation on any exposed section of pipe
- a tap designed to resist frost, which some manufacturers make
- fixing drips straight away, because a leaking tap holds water that can freeze
Ask the plumber to show you where the inside valve is once the job is done.
What changes the cost of an outside tap
| What is being priced | What makes it bigger or smaller | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Type of job | Swap on existing pipe, or a new tap and pipe run | Which one they are quoting |
| The tap | Basic, lockable, frost-resistant, with built-in check valve | Which tap, and who supplies it |
| Check valve | Built into the tap, or a separate inline valve | Where it will be fitted |
| Pipe run | Short run through the wall, or a long route | How the pipe will be routed |
| Wall | Brick, block, stone, timber frame, cavity | How the hole will be made and sealed |
| Valves inside | Isolating valve, drain point | Whether these are included |
| Insulation | Exposed pipe, inside and out | Whether lagging is included |
| Making good | Filling, boxing, decorating inside | Where the price stops |
| VAT | Whether the business is VAT registered | Whether the total includes VAT |
A business must register for VAT when its taxable turnover goes over £90,000 [S2], so a sole trader on a small job may not charge it. Ask whether each total includes VAT.
Leaks and other faults
A dripping outside tap is not always a reason to replace it. A worn washer or a loose gland can sometimes be fixed. But an old tap that is seized, cracked by frost or leaking from the wall plate is often simpler to replace. If water is appearing inside the house near where the pipe comes through, mention it straight away, because the leak may be on the inside section.
Outside taps in Cheshire
A plumber or handyman covering Crewe, Nantwich, Sandbach and the villages around them can usually tell from two photos whether the job is a straight swap or a new run. Send one of the outside wall where the tap is or will be, and one of the pipework under the kitchen sink or in the utility room.
If you are out of town, mention it in the job so a plumber can tell you whether you are in their area. Anyone in the UK can still post a job or register a business on QuoteZila.
Hosepipes and safe use
A new outside tap is often bought with a hosepipe in mind, so it is worth thinking about how it will be used. A hose left lying in a pond, a water butt, a paddling pool or a bucket of soapy water is exactly the situation the check valve is there for. A trigger gun on the end of the hose stops water running when nobody is holding it, which also saves water.
If you plan to connect a pressure washer, a garden sprinkler or an irrigation timer, tell the plumber. Some of these need a particular fitting or a valve that suits them, and it is easier to plan at the start than to change the tap later.
What to have ready before you ask for quotes
- whether you are replacing a tap or adding a new one
- a photo of the outside wall, and of the old tap if there is one
- a photo of the cold pipe you think the tap could come from
- the wall type, if you know it
- whether you want a lockable or frost-resistant tap
- whether you are buying the tap yourself
- your postcode and when the work could be done
How to compare outside tap quotes
Check each quote for:
- The tap named, and whether it has a built-in check valve.
- Where any separate check valve and isolating valve will go.
- The pipe route and how the wall will be drilled and sealed.
- Insulation on exposed pipe.
- Making good inside.
- Whether VAT is included.
Citizens Advice suggests getting written quotes from at least three traders, and says some traders charge for quotes, so it is worth asking first [S3]. For a small job, a clear message with the price and what it covers is a sensible minimum.
Jobs you might post
These are examples, not taken from real job posts. "Outside tap is seized and drips from the wall plate. Please replace it with a frost-resistant tap." Or: "Need a new outside tap on the back wall, about a metre from the kitchen sink pipework." Or: "Add a lockable outside tap at the front of the house for washing the car."

Questions about outside tap costs
How much does it cost to replace an outside tap?
This guide does not print a price. A straight swap of a worn tap on existing pipework is a smaller job than drilling through a wall and running a new pipe from the kitchen. The parts, the wall and any frost protection also change the total, so ask plumbers to price the same job.
Does an outside tap need a check valve?
Yes. WaterSafe says the water fittings regulations specify that outside taps should always have a double check valve to prevent backflow. Homes built since 1999 typically have an inline double check valve built into the supply pipe to the outside tap, and homes built before that usually have one built into the tap. Ask the plumber which they are fitting.
Can a new outside tap go anywhere on the wall?
It can go most places, but the closer it is to an existing cold supply, the shorter the pipe run. A tap on the far side of the house, or one that needs a pipe through a thick stone wall, is more work. Tell plumbers where you want it and send a photo.
How do I stop an outside tap freezing?
Ask the plumber to fit an isolating valve inside so the outside section can be drained down in winter, and to insulate any exposed pipe. Some taps are designed to resist frost. Fixing drips also helps, because water left in a leaking tap can freeze.
Should a handyman or a plumber fit an outside tap?
Either can, if they are competent with water fittings. WaterSafe runs a register of approved plumbers you can search by postcode. Whoever you choose, ask how they will meet the check valve rule and what their written guarantee covers.
Can I get quotes for an outside tap on QuoteZila?
Yes. Post the job with a photo of the wall and the nearest cold tap inside, and your postcode. Up to five matched local businesses can reply. QuoteZila is free for customers and local businesses.
Does QuoteZila check the plumbers who quote?
No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.
