How much does a TV bracket on the wall cost?

In Cheshire, a TV bracket price depends on the wall, the bracket type and whether cables or a new socket are part of the visit. Ask the fitter to name the wall and the fixing before they drill.

The bracket is a small job with a few ways to grow

In a Cheshire living room, fitting a television bracket means fixing a mount to a wall and putting the set on it. The visit grows when the wall is not solid, when the bracket articulates, when the cables have to disappear, or when there is no socket nearby. A visit that is only the bracket should say so. A visit that includes a new socket is electrical work as well. No figure is printed, because we could not find two dated public sources that agree on one.

Electrics, kept separate from the screws

The Planning Portal says that if you carry out electrical installation work in your home or garden in England and Wales, you must comply with the building regulations [S1]. The practical route it describes is an installer registered with a competent person scheme, who can self-certify [S1]. Notifiable work includes a new circuit and a new consumer unit, and alterations in special locations [S1]. In England, special locations are the spaces around baths and showers [S1]. Most repairs and alterations outside those locations are not notifiable, but they still have to comply [S1].

A living-room socket that already exists, with the cables left alone, is not a new circuit. A fitter who wants a new outlet behind the set should price an electrician, or be one. Do not open accessories or move cables yourself. Do not open the socket yourself.

Electrical Safety First: find a registered electrician; NICEIC; NAPIT. QuoteZila is not affiliated with this organisation.

If the visit adds a socket, check the electrician on the Electrical Safety First register search and on NICEIC or NAPIT. A bracket-only visit does not need that check. A visit that opens the wall does.

The wall and the set

Tell the fitter the screen size only if you can read it from the manual or the label. Do not guess a weight. Say whether you want the set flat, tilted, or pulled out. Those are different brackets, and a quote that does not name the type cannot be compared.

Masonry, timber studs and dot-and-dab plasterboard take different fixings. If you have had the wall apart before, say what you found. If not, the fitter should look. Corners, a flue, and a wall you share with a neighbour are reasons to pause. A TV bracket is not, on its own, a reason to assume party-wall work. Do not fix into a wall you cannot identify.

Height: if the bottom of the set will be above head height, ask how the fitter will stand. The Health and Safety Executive's definition of work at height is a place where a fall could cause injury [S2]. Ask them to plan that. Do not stand on a chair to mark holes over the fireplace as a rehearsal.

What to send

  • The room and a photo of the wall, including sockets and the ceiling line.
  • Whether you already own a bracket.
  • Whether the aerial cable is in that room. The aerial itself is a different trade, on the aerial installers' page.
  • The postcode.

Jobs you might post

These are examples, not taken from real job posts.

  • "Living room in Crewe, solid wall we think. Fixed bracket, cables in surface trunking, existing socket stays. Please confirm the wall when you see it. No new electrics."
  • "Bedroom in Nantwich over a fireplace. Stud wall. Please price fixings for a hollow wall and say if the height means you need a platform. We will not mark the holes ourselves."
  • "We want the cables inside the wall and a socket behind the set. Please price a registered electrician for that part, separately from the bracket."

Quotes

Citizens Advice says get the price in writing from more than one trader where you can, at least three if you are comparing properly, and remember a quote is fixed while an estimate is a guess [S3]. For a small job, three visits may be more trouble than the work. You can still ask two firms, and you can still refuse a trader who will not write the figure down [S3]. Ask to see insurance if they are drilling and working over your floor [S3]. Deposit: not above 25% if one is unavoidable [S3].

Cables, the chimney breast and the set you already own

Most of the arguments in a bracket quote are about the wall and the wires, not about the hour on site. Say whether the television is already in the house. A fitter who supplies the set is quoting a different purchase from a fitter who only hangs what you own. Ask the fitter to work from the weight in the manual, and do not ask them to guess a screen size. If you know the weight from the manual, copy it into the post. If you do not, say you do not, and let the fitter read the label. A guessed weight is how the wrong fixing gets written down.

Cable tidying is the line that quietly becomes electrical work. Leaving the leads in a trunking on the surface is one job. Fishing them inside a wall is another, and it can mean a new outlet [S1]. Ask which is quoted. If the answer is "we'll see when we start", ask for a price that assumes surface trunking and a separate line if the wall has to be opened. The second line should name an electrician if it is installation work [S1].

A chimney breast is a common place to hang a set and a common place to meet a flue. Do not drill toward a flue because a picture on a website showed a screen there. Tell the fitter if the chimney is still used, or if you do not know. Ask them to confirm what the wall is made of before they commit to a fixing. Dot-and-dab, studs and solid brick are different. Ask the fitter which fixing suits that breast, and do not buy one first.

Soundbars, a shelf, and a second screen in a bedroom are extras. List them or forbid them. A quote for one bracket in one room should say "one room" so it cannot be read as the whole house.

Height above head height is the point where the Health and Safety Executive's definition of a fall that could injure someone becomes the right question [S2]. Ask how the fitter will stand, and do not mark the holes yourself from a chair as a rehearsal. If the set sits at standing eye level on a solid wall, say that too, so the firm does not arrive with a scaffold they do not need, or without a plan they do.

Tenants should say they are tenants. A fixing that leaves holes may need the landlord's agreement. If you do not own the wall, find out before someone drills it.

Where this applies. The notifiable-work notes are the Planning Portal's for England and Wales, with the England wording for baths and showers [S1]. They are not a call-out fee.

Say whether the set is already in the room or still in its box, and whether anyone will need to carry it upstairs. A visit that includes moving a large television through a narrow hall is a different job from one where the set is already waiting by the wall.

Questions about TV brackets

How much does it cost to fit a TV bracket?

A fixed bracket on a solid wall is a different visit from a full-motion bracket on a hollow wall, with cables hidden and a new socket. Ask each fitter to name the wall and the bracket.

Does the bracket itself need an electrician?

Hanging the set is not, by itself, described on the electrics page as notifiable work. If the job adds a socket or a circuit, electrical installation work in the home must comply with the building regulations. Use a registered electrician for that part. In England, alterations around a bath or shower are notifiable, and a new circuit is notifiable in any room.

What should I tell the fitter about the wall?

Whether it is masonry, a stud wall, or plasterboard on dabs, if you know. If you do not know, say so, and let them look. A quote that assumes brick will not match a quote that includes fixings for a hollow wall. Ask the fitter which fixing suits that wall, and do not buy one before they have looked.

Can the cables be hidden?

Ask for that as a line: surface trunking, or a route inside the wall done by someone competent. Do not chase a wall or open a consumer unit from a set of instructions. If the route needs a new circuit, the Planning Portal's rules on notifiable electrical work apply.

What if the set is high on the wall?

The Health and Safety Executive says work at height is any place where a person could fall a distance liable to cause injury if there were no precautions. A bracket at standing height may not be that. A bracket reached from a step where a fall would injure someone can be. Ask how the fitter will work. Do not climb to the bracket yourself.

Should I pay the whole fee before they arrive?

Citizens Advice says to avoid a large upfront payment and not to agree more than 25% if a deposit cannot be avoided. For a short visit, ask whether anything is due before they come. Some traders charge to quote: ask first.

Does QuoteZila check TV fitters?

No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.

Can I post a bracket job?

Yes. Name the room, the wall if you know it, and your Cheshire postcode. Up to five matched local businesses can quote. QuoteZila is free for customers and local businesses.
