What to ask before solar panels are cleaned

A solar panel cleaning price is a visit to panels that are already installed, using the maintenance guide the installer left and access the contractor plans. Keep a cleaning quote separate from any price for fitting a new array.

Cleaning is not a new array

Solar panels that are already on a roof, a garage or a frame in the garden sometimes need dirt, leaves or pollen taken off them. That visit is not the purchase of a system, not an inverter replacement, and not a connection into the house electrics. Leave the inverter, the cables and the consumer unit to an electrician. If a fault is electrical, stop and use an electrician. The cleaning question is narrower: what the installer said about keeping the glass reasonably clear, and who will reach the panels. The contractor should name that access.

MCS publishes figures for the cost of installing a system. They are not repeated here, because a single non-government price is not a benchmark for a wash, and because those figures are about fitting panels, not about washing them.

What MCS actually says about living with the panels

The MCS page on solar photovoltaic panels says panels are low-maintenance: keep them reasonably clean and make sure shading is minimised where possible [S1]. Your MCS installer should provide a simple maintenance guide with checks to keep the system running, including common inverter signals and basic troubleshooting tips [S1]. The panels can last over 25 years, and the inverter may need replacing during that time [S1]. Those two sentences are not a cleaning rota and not a quote.

The same page says you should receive an MCS certificate within 10 working days of completion [S1]. Read that as an installation record. It also says that before an installer begins work on a new system you need to tell your distribution network operator about the type and capacity, and that the installer can sometimes do that for you [S1]. Telling the network operator is an installation step. It is not a step in a cleaning visit. Listed buildings, conservation areas and World Heritage Sites may have extra rules for putting panels up, and MCS says to ask the council or a certified installer [S1]. That is about where panels are placed, not about a sponge.

MCS says you can check an installer on its Find an Installer search or by calling its helpdesk, and that it is worth checking when you get a quote, before you sign, and before installation starts [S1]. Use that for anyone who will alter the system. A person who only washes glass is still someone whose insurance you should ask to see. QuoteZila does not do that check.

If the panels are above the ground

The HSE law page says the Work at Height Regulations 2005 exist to prevent death and injury from a fall [S2]. They apply to employers and to those who control work at height, and the examples include building owners who contract others [S2]. The work must be properly planned, supervised and carried out by competent people, with the right equipment, and the risks assessed first [S2]. Low-risk, straightforward tasks need less planning effort [S2]. None of that is a drawing of a ladder against a soffit.

Standing on a roof, walking a scaffold or reaching from an upstairs window stays in the contractor's plan. If your panels are on a roof, say so, attach a photograph taken from the ground, and ask the contractor to name the access in the quote. Panels on a garden frame may not need anyone to leave the ground. Say that too, so you are not sold a roof visit for a frame you can walk around.

HSE: work at height. QuoteZila is not affiliated with this organisation.

Dates and money that are not a cleaning price

MCS says Energy Company Obligation 4 is set to end on 31 March 2026 [S1]. October 2026 is after that end, so ECO4 is not a way to fund a clean. The Smart Export Guarantee, as MCS describes it, is a route to be paid for electricity you export, by applying to a supplier [S1]. It is not a cleaning budget. Bill-saving ranges on that page are not copied here.

Citizens Advice still applies to the quote you do ask for: a fixed price in writing, ideally from at least three traders, a breakdown, how long the price lasts, and whether VAT is included [S3]. Some traders charge to quote. Ask first. Deposits: avoid one, or do not agree to more than 25% if you cannot avoid it, and get a receipt [S3]. Ask to see insurance that covers the day of the visit [S3].

A frame in the garden is not a roof array

MCS says panels are most often on a roof, and that they can also sit in a garden or on a shed or a garage [S1]. Put that location in the first line of the job. A frame you can walk around may need no one to leave the ground. A garage roof may be lower than the house roof and still be work at height, which is for the contractor to plan [S2]. Do not describe either as the other in order to make a total look smaller.

Count the panels from the ground if you safely can, and photograph shade at the time of day you care about. A tree that covers the bottom row in the afternoon is a shading note, which MCS treats as part of living with the system, separate from dirt on the glass [S1]. Ask the quote to say whether cutting that tree is included. It usually should not be, unless you have asked a tree firm. Mixing a gardener's work into a panel wash makes the totals impossible to compare.

If pigeons or leaves gather under the array, say that too, and ask whether the quote includes the debris on the roof surface around the panels or only the glass. Do not get onto the roof to look. A photograph from an upstairs window, taken from inside the room, is as far as the description needs to go.

Cheshire roofs, from the ground

QuoteZila is starting in Cheshire, with Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach named first. Anyone in the UK can still post a job or register a business [QZ5]. Count the panels from the ground if you can, say whether trees shade them, and say you want the installer's maintenance guide followed. How many people reply depends on who has joined [QZ5].

Honest status: QuoteZila is new. We're starting in Cheshire, beginning with Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach, and growing area by area. Anyone in the UK can still post a job or register a business. How fast you get quotes depends on how many local businesses have joined near you. Businesses can register and receive jobs straight away. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire.

Up to five matched local businesses can send quotes [QZ2]. QuoteZila is free for customers and local businesses [QZ1].

Posting a job is not open yet

See solar and EV charger installers, window cleaners and roofers. Roof repair cost, electrician cost in Cheshire and house cleaner cost are other guides to a written price. The electrician guide is linked because electrical faults are a different job from washing glass.

This page is general information, not professional or legal advice. QuoteZila does not check Gas Safe, WaterSafe, NFRC, NICEIC or other registrations against the register on your behalf: look them up yourself.

Jobs you might post

These are examples, not taken from real job posts.

  • "Eight panels on a Crewe roof, photo from the pavement. Please quote a clean that follows an installer maintenance guide I will show you. Name your access. Do not open the inverter."
  • "Garden frame in Nantwich, reached from the lawn. I want a clean only, and a separate sentence if you think a tree is shading the panels."
  • "Sandbach garage roof. I do not have the maintenance guide. Please say if you will still quote, and what you will refuse to touch."

Questions about solar panel cleaning

Does MCS tell owners to wash panels themselves?

The MCS consumer page says solar panels are low-maintenance and that you need to keep them reasonably clean and to minimise shading where possible. It says your installer will provide a simple maintenance guide, including common inverter signals and basic troubleshooting tips. This QuoteZila page does not turn that into a wash from a ladder or a hose method. Ask the installer for the guide they were supposed to leave, and ask a contractor to follow it.

How long does MCS say the panels can last?

MCS says the panels themselves can last over 25 years, but the inverter may need replacing during that time. That is a lifespan sentence, not a cleaning interval and not a price. An installation certificate, on the same page, is something you should receive within 10 working days of completion of an installation. A clean of existing panels is not that installation, so do not expect the 10-day certificate to describe a wash.

Who plans the work if someone has to leave the ground?

HSE says the Work at Height Regulations 2005 apply to employers and to people who control work at height, including building owners who contract others. The work must be planned, supervised and done by competent people with the right equipment, after the risks are assessed. A roof ladder, a walkway and a way onto the array stay in the contractor's plan. If the panels can only be reached by leaving the ground, say that in the job and let the contractor name the access.

Is a grant date on the MCS page still a way to pay for cleaning?

MCS says Energy Company Obligation 4 is set to end on 31 March 2026. October 2026 is after that end, so ECO4 is not a current route to pay for cleaning or for a new array. Other schemes on that page, including the Smart Export Guarantee, are about electricity you export, not about a cleaning visit. A cleaning quote should not borrow a bill-saving figure from an installation guide.

What paperwork should a cleaning quote still have?

Citizens Advice says get written quotes from at least three traders where you can, and treat a quote as a fixed price rather than an estimate. Ask whether VAT is included. A business must register for VAT when taxable turnover for the last 12 months goes over £90,000. If a deposit cannot be avoided, do not agree to more than 25%. None of that replaces the maintenance guide or the access plan.

Does QuoteZila check the businesses?

No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.
