What changes the cost of dishwasher installation?

Dishwasher installation is priced on whether it is a like-for-like swap or a new position, and on the water supply, waste connection, electrical point, cabinet work and removal of the old machine. Electrical Safety First says appliances under worktops should ideally be controlled by a switch above the worktop [S1], and this guide prints no price.

What does dishwasher installation involve?

A dishwasher needs three things: a cold water supply, a waste pipe to take dirty water away, and electricity. Installation means connecting all three safely, levelling the machine and testing it for leaks. If the dishwasher is integrated, the installer also fits it into the kitchen units and attaches a door panel to match the rest of the kitchen.

This guide does not print a price. It explains what changes the quote and what to ask before you agree to one. QuoteZila starts in Cheshire, with Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach first, and anyone in the UK can post the job.

The biggest difference in price is between a like-for-like swap and a new position. If the old dishwasher sat in the same space with working connections, the new one can often go straight in. If there has never been a dishwasher there, pipes, a waste connection and an electrical point may all be new.

What changes the price of dishwasher installation?

FactorWhat to askWhy it moves the price
Swap or new positionWas there a dishwasher here before?A new position needs new pipes and power
Freestanding or integratedDoes a door panel need fitting?Integrated machines take longer to fit and align
Slimline or full sizeWill it fit the gap, and does a unit need removing?Cabinet changes add joinery time
Water supplyIs there a valve and connection under the sink?A new tee and valve may be needed
WasteIs there a spare spigot on the sink waste or trap?A new waste fitting or standpipe may be needed
Electrical pointIs there a socket or spur in reach?New sockets or spurs are electrical work
Distance from sinkHow far from the existing pipes?Longer runs add pipe and labour
Old machineIs removal and disposal included?Often a separate charge
DeliveryIs the installer also delivering it?Some retailers include delivery and fitting
VATIncluded or extra?Changes the total [S5]

Two quotes can look very different because one assumes a simple swap and the other has spotted that a new waste fitting and a spur are needed. Ask each installer to look at the space, or send clear photos, before quoting.

Water and waste connections

The plumbing side of the job usually includes:

  • A cold water connection, often a tee and appliance valve on the pipe under the sink, so the dishwasher can be shut off on its own.
  • A waste connection, usually to a spigot on the sink trap or waste, or to a standpipe with a trap.
  • Routing the hoses so they are not kinked or crushed behind the machine, and so the waste hose loops high enough to stop dirty water running back.
  • Testing with a short cycle, checking every joint for drips.

If the sink and the dishwasher are far apart, or on different walls, the plumber may need to run new pipes behind or under the units. Our plumber cost guide explains how plumbing labour is usually priced.

Electrical safety in the kitchen

Electrical Safety First says that if large appliances such as fridges, dishwashers and washing machines are installed under worktops, getting to sockets may be difficult, and that ideally these appliances should be controlled by a switch placed above the worktop so you can reach it easily [S1]. It also says socket-outlets and switches should be fitted at a safe distance from the sink, where possible at least 30cm horizontally [S1].

If the dishwasher can plug into an existing socket, that is not installation work. A new socket, a switched spur or a new circuit is. GOV.UK says that additional power points and other alterations to existing circuits do not need to be reported to a building control body, except around baths and showers, while a new circuit connected to the fuse box does [S3]. Electrical Safety First says that, apart from some minor tasks, electrical work must be reported to building control or carried out by a registered electrician in a government-approved scheme [S2].

This page does not give DIY steps for electrical work. You can find a registered electrician through Electrical Safety First. Electrical Safety First: find a registered electrician; NICEIC; NAPIT. QuoteZila is not affiliated with this organisation. Our electrician cost guide explains how electrical work is usually priced.

Integrated dishwashers and kitchen units

An integrated dishwasher hides behind a door that matches the kitchen. Fitting one well takes care:

  • The gap has to match the machine's height, width and depth, with room for the hoses behind.
  • The plinth under the units may need trimming or cutting so the dishwasher door can open.
  • The door panel is fixed to the dishwasher door with brackets, and adjusted so it lines up with the doors either side.
  • The worktop above may need a protective strip to stop steam damaging the underside.

If you are replacing a unit with a dishwasher, the cabinet work can be a large part of the cost. A kitchen fitter may be the right person. If it is part of a full refit, our kitchen cost guide covers the wider job.

Before the installer arrives

A little preparation makes the visit quicker:

  • check the new dishwasher fits the space, measuring height, width and depth
  • clear the cupboard under the sink so the installer can reach the pipes and valves
  • find the stopcock, in case the water needs turning off
  • note whether there is a socket or spur nearby, and photograph it
  • keep the dishwasher's instructions and fitting kit together
  • say whether the old machine needs taking away

If you are buying a new dishwasher, check it against current product recalls. GOV.UK has a search for product safety alerts, reports and recalls.

Moving a dishwasher to a new position

Sometimes the dishwasher is not new, but the kitchen layout is changing. Moving an existing dishwasher to another part of the kitchen is close to a new installation, because the water, waste and power have to reach the new spot. Ask the installer:

  • whether the old water valve and waste spigot will be capped off safely
  • how the new pipes will run, behind units, under the floor or along the wall
  • whether the old socket or spur can still be reached, or a new one is needed
  • what making good is needed where the machine used to be, such as a new unit or a filler panel

If a radiator is also in the way, our guide to the cost of moving a radiator explains that job.

What can go wrong?

Most problems after a fitting come from the connections. Ask the installer to show you the finished job and run a short cycle while they are there. Look for:

  • drips at the water valve or the waste connection
  • a waste hose that is kinked or sits too low
  • a machine that rocks or is not level, which can make the door catch
  • an integrated door panel that rubs on the units either side
  • a plug or cable trapped behind the machine

If a dishwasher leaks onto the floor near electrics, switch it off at the socket or spur and call the installer back. For faults inside the machine, an appliance repairer can help.

How do you compare dishwasher installation quotes?

Ask each installer for the same details:

  • whether it is a swap or a new position, and what new pipes or fittings are needed
  • who does the plumbing, the electrics and any cabinet work
  • whether an integrated door panel is included
  • whether removal of the old machine is included
  • what testing they will do before leaving
  • the total, with VAT shown

Citizens Advice says to try to get written quotes from at least 3 different traders, and that some traders charge for quotes, so ask about this first [S4]. It says a quote is a fixed price, while an estimate is just a rough guess [S4].

Questions about dishwasher installation costs

How much does dishwasher installation cost?

This guide does not print a figure. Swapping a freestanding dishwasher into the same space with the same connections is a short job. Fitting an integrated dishwasher in a new position, with a new water supply, waste and electrical point, is a much bigger one. Ask for a written quote that lists each part of the job.

Does a new dishwasher need a new socket?

Not always. If there is a suitable socket or switched spur within reach, the dishwasher can use it. Electrical Safety First says appliances such as dishwashers under worktops should ideally be controlled by a switch above the worktop, so you can reach it easily. A new circuit or spur is electrical work for a competent electrician.

Is fitting a dishwasher notifiable electrical work?

Plugging a dishwasher into an existing socket is not electrical installation work. GOV.UK says additional power points or other alterations to existing circuits do not need to be reported to building control, except around baths and showers. Electrical Safety First says that, apart from some minor tasks, electrical work must be reported or done by a registered electrician. GOV.UK lists a new circuit connected to the fuse box as work to tell building control about.

Who should fit a dishwasher?

A plumber for the water and waste connections, a kitchen fitter if cabinet work or an integrated door is involved, and an electrician for any new socket, spur or circuit. Some businesses do all three. Ask who will do each part, and whether they are competent for it.

Can the installer take the old dishwasher away?

Many will, sometimes for an extra charge. Retailers may also offer to collect an old appliance when they deliver a new one. Ask whether removal is included, and where the old machine will go.

Does VAT change the price?

It can. A business must register for VAT if its taxable turnover for the last 12 months goes over £90,000. Ask whether each quote includes VAT.

Does QuoteZila check installers?

No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.

This page is general information, not professional or legal advice. QuoteZila does not check Gas Safe, WaterSafe, NFRC, NICEIC or other registrations against the register on your behalf: look them up yourself.
