What changes the cost of a kitchen sink replacement?
In Cheshire, the cost of a kitchen sink replacement depends on the type of sink, whether it fits the existing worktop hole, the waste and trap, the tap, and any dishwasher or washing machine connections. We print no fitting price, so ask for quotes on the same sink and the same list of work.
Last reviewed:What a kitchen sink replacement involves
Replacing a kitchen sink usually means turning off the water, taking off the tap and waste, cutting the old sealant, lifting out the old sink, preparing the worktop, fitting the new sink with its clips and seal, refitting or replacing the tap, connecting the waste and trap, reconnecting any appliances and testing for leaks. If the new sink does not match the old hole, the worktop has to be cut or changed.
The sink itself can be a small part of the total. What decides the size of the job is how it sits in the worktop and what is connected to it.
QuoteZila is starting in Cheshire, with Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach among the first towns. This guide prints no price. It explains what to look at when you compare sink quotes.
Types of kitchen sink
- Inset (top-mount). The sink drops into a hole in the worktop and the rim sits on top. This is the simplest type to swap like for like.
- Undermount. The sink is fixed under the worktop, so the edge of the cut-out is on show. It suits stone, quartz and solid surface worktops, and needs a polished cut-out.
- Ceramic Belfast or butler sink. A deep, heavy sink that sits on a base unit, with the worktop running up to it. It often needs a specific unit and strong support.
- Composite or granite-effect. Made from stone particles and resin. Fitted like an inset or undermount depending on the model.
- Stainless steel. Light and common, in inset and undermount versions.
Changing from one type to another, for example from inset to undermount, is a much bigger job than replacing like with like.
The worktop decides a lot
The worktop is often where quotes differ most.
- Same hole. If the new sink matches the old cut-out, the job is mostly plumbing.
- Bigger hole. A laminate or wood worktop can usually be cut larger on site. The edges then need sealing against water.
- Smaller sink. A smaller sink leaves a gap that cannot be filled neatly, which may mean a new worktop section.
- Stone and quartz. These are normally cut and polished by the worktop maker, not on site, so a new cut-out may mean a template visit and a separate supplier.
Measure the old sink's outside edge and send photos when you ask for quotes. If you have chosen a sink, send the manufacturer's cut-out size.
Waste, trap and appliances
Under the sink there is usually more than one pipe. The waste from the sink bowl, any overflow, and the drain hoses from a dishwasher or washing machine can all join at the trap. The cold water supplies to the appliances often run from valves in the same cupboard.
A new sink usually comes with its own waste kit, and the trap may need changing to suit it. Ask each plumber whether reconnecting appliances is included, and whether they will fit new valves if the old ones are stiff.
The Planning Portal says a kitchen refit with new units and fittings does not generally need building regulations approval, but drainage or electrical work within it may [S1]. Moving the sink to a different wall usually means new drainage, so ask whether approval is needed.
What changes the cost of a kitchen sink replacement
| What is being priced | What makes it bigger or smaller | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| The sink | Inset, undermount, Belfast, composite, stainless, size | Which sink, and who supplies it |
| Worktop | Same hole, bigger hole, new section, stone template | Who cuts the worktop and how edges are sealed |
| Base unit | Existing unit, or a new one for a Belfast sink | Whether a joiner or kitchen fitter is needed |
| Tap | Reused or new, one hole or two | Whether the tap is fitted and who supplies it |
| Waste and trap | New waste kit, new trap, overflow | Whether the trap and waste are included |
| Appliances | Dishwasher, washing machine, water softener | Whether reconnecting and testing are included |
| Valves | Existing valves stiff or missing | Whether new valves are included |
| Removal | Taking away the old sink | Whether disposal is included |
| VAT | Whether the business is VAT registered | Whether the total includes VAT |
A business must register for VAT when its taxable turnover goes over £90,000 [S2]. Ask whether each total includes VAT.
Who to ask
For a like-for-like inset sink on a laminate or wood worktop, a plumber is usually the right person. For a Belfast sink on a new unit, or a worktop that needs cutting, ask a kitchen fitter, or a plumber and a joiner working together. For stone or quartz, ask the worktop maker about the cut-out first.
WaterSafe runs a register of approved plumbers you can search by postcode [S3]. It is one check you can use alongside asking about insurance and a written guarantee.
Sink replacement in Cheshire
A plumber or kitchen fitter covering Crewe, Nantwich, Sandbach and the villages nearby can usually tell from photos whether a sink swap is simple or needs worktop work. Send a photo of the sink from above, one of the cupboard underneath with the doors open, and the worktop material if you know it.
If you are outside the towns, mention it, so a fitter can tell you whether you are in their area. Anyone in the UK can still post a job or register a business on QuoteZila.
Keeping the kitchen working
A sink swap usually leaves the kitchen without water for part of a day. Ask the fitter how long the sink will be out of use, whether the dishwasher and washing machine can stay connected in the meantime, and whether the sealant needs time to cure before the sink is used.
Choosing a sink that fits how you cook
The sink you pick changes the job as well as the kitchen. A single deep bowl takes large pans but leaves nowhere to rinse. A bowl and a half, or two bowls, give a second space but need a wider cut-out. A drainer takes up worktop but keeps water off it. An undermount sink looks neat but leaves no rim to catch drips at the edge of the worktop.
Think too about the cupboard below. A deep Belfast sink, a waste disposal unit or a boiling water tap tank all take space under the sink. Measure the cupboard, inside and out, before you choose, and tell the fitter what else has to fit in there.
What to have ready before you ask for quotes
- the sink you want, or the type, with its cut-out size
- the worktop material: laminate, wood, stone, quartz or something else
- photos of the current sink and the cupboard underneath
- the measurements of the old sink's outside edge
- whether the tap is being reused or replaced
- which appliances connect under the sink
- whether you are buying the sink yourself
- your postcode and when the work could be done
How to compare kitchen sink quotes
Check each quote for:
- The sink named, and who supplies it.
- Who cuts or changes the worktop, and how the edges are sealed.
- The tap, waste kit and trap.
- Reconnecting the dishwasher and washing machine.
- Any new valves.
- Taking away the old sink.
- Whether VAT is included, and whether it is a fixed price.
Citizens Advice suggests getting written quotes from at least three traders and not relying on a verbal quote [S4].
Jobs you might post
These are examples, not taken from real job posts. "Replace a stained stainless steel inset sink with a new one of the same size. Laminate worktop." Or: "Fit a ceramic Belfast sink in place of an inset sink, including a new base unit and worktop changes." Or: "New composite sink and mixer tap, and reconnect the dishwasher."

Questions about kitchen sink replacement costs
How much does a kitchen sink replacement cost?
This guide does not print a price. A like-for-like inset sink that drops into the existing hole is a smaller job than an undermount sink in stone, or a ceramic Belfast sink that needs a new base unit. Ask each fitter to quote for the same sink and work.
Can a new sink go in the old worktop hole?
Only if it is the same size or slightly larger, so the cut-out can be enlarged. A smaller sink leaves a gap that cannot be hidden. Measure the old sink's outer rim and the cut-out, or send photos, and check the new sink's cut-out size before you buy.
Who fits a kitchen sink: a plumber or a kitchen fitter?
A plumber can usually swap an inset sink on a laminate or wood worktop. If the worktop needs cutting or the base unit changing, a kitchen fitter or joiner may be needed too. Stone and quartz worktops are normally cut by the worktop maker, not on site.
Do I need building regulations approval for a new kitchen sink?
Usually not. The Planning Portal says a kitchen refit with new units and fittings does not generally need building regulations approval, but drainage or electrical work within it may. Moving the sink to a new wall is more likely to involve new drainage.
Will my dishwasher and washing machine need reconnecting?
Often, yes. Appliance waste hoses usually connect to the sink trap, and their water supplies run from valves near the sink. Ask the plumber to include reconnecting and testing them, and to check whether the new trap has the right connections.
Should I pay a deposit for a new sink?
If the fitter is ordering the sink for you, a deposit may be asked for. Citizens Advice suggests not agreeing to more than 25%. Agree in writing what the deposit covers.
Does QuoteZila check the businesses who quote?
No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.
