How much does artificial grass cost in Cheshire?

In Cheshire, an artificial grass price depends on the area, the base under it, the edging and what happens to the old turf. This page does not print a figure, because we could not find two dated public sources that agree on one.

A lawn replacement is not a price per roll

In Cheshire, including the lawns people describe in Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach, artificial grass means a synthetic surface in place of turf, with the base and the edging the quote actually names. Posting is open to people elsewhere in the UK as well. QuoteZila is new, so how many quotes you get depends on how many businesses near you have joined [QZ5].

Measure in a way you can repeat. Pacing the lawn and writing "about the size of the patio" is a weak brief. A length and a width, even if you measured with a tape from the path and the numbers are rough, gives two firms the same patch. Say that the numbers are your measurements, not a survey.

What the Planning Portal says about the lawn

The Planning Portal's answer on replacing a grass lawn with artificial grass says that in most cases neither planning permission nor building control approval is required [S1]. The same answer says that if you live in a protected area such as a conservation area, or in a listed building, contact the local planning authority to check whether any consents are required [S1]. This page does not decide which gardens those are. Your council can.

That answer is about replacing grass. It is not a design manual, and this page will not add installation steps, depths or a preferred product. If a contractor quotes a sentence you cannot find on that Planning Portal answer, ask them which document they are using.

Paving the front is a different rule

Front-garden paving has its own page on the Planning Portal. You do not need planning permission if the surface is permeable, or if the rainwater drains to a lawn or a border [S2]. Permission is needed when more than five square metres of impermeable paving does not drain to a permeable area [S2]. That rule is for paving, and the page is written for houses rather than flats [S2]. Do not paste it onto a back-garden lawn and do not paste the lawn answer onto a new driveway.

A dropped kerb, so a vehicle can cross the pavement, is a separate application to the council [S2]. Leave it out of the grass price. Driveway cost is the hard-surface guide. Landscapers and gardeners are the trade pages for the lawn itself.

What the quote has to split

LineWhat changes if it is missing
AreaTwo firms must be pricing the same patch
Existing turfTaken away, buried, or left
Base under the grassIncluded, or supply-only roll
EdgingTimber, metal, stone, or none
Where rain goesOnto the new surface, or off it
WasteWho takes the turf and the soil
VATThreshold £90,000 [S4]

A supply-only roll can look far cheaper than a laid lawn. Citizens Advice says a price much lower than the others may mean the work is not the same work [S3]. Put the rows next to each other before you treat the low total as the careful one.

Paper, VAT and the visit

Citizens Advice says to get written quotes, and that a quote is a fixed price while an estimate is a rough guess [S3]. Accepting the quote binds you [S3]. Aim for written quotes from at least 3 traders [S3]. Some traders charge to prepare a quote, so ask before they come [S3]. The paper should show a fixed total, a breakdown, how long the price lasts, whether VAT is included, and when it can rise [S3].

A business must register for VAT when taxable turnover for the last 12 months goes over £90,000, or when it expects to go over £90,000 in the next 30 days [S4].

If the advert says there is no call-out charge, the Advertising Standards Authority says that is fair only when you are not charged for travelling to the premises, the initial diagnosis, or any other charge before you agree the work [S5]. A measure-up in the garden can be that initial visit.

Where a deposit cannot be avoided, do not agree more than 25%, and take a receipt [S3]. Pay by card rather than cash for the whole lawn before the turf is lifted [S3]. Ask to see insurance that still covers the fitting dates [S3].

What to photograph from the path

  • The lawn, including the edges against a path or a fence.
  • Any manhole or drain cover you can see without lifting it.
  • A tree, a shed or a rotary line that sits inside the area.
  • The gate the roll would have to come through.
  • A slope you can see only when you stand on the lawn. Describe the slope. Do not dig it.

Do not take the turf up yourself to "make the quote easier". Do not lay a sample over a cover you still need to open. If you are not sure the garden is only grass, say so. A patio that is being buried under a synthetic lawn is closer to the paving question than to the grass-replacement answer [S2].

Edges, covers and a garden that is not a rectangle

Most lawns are not a clean rectangle. A curve around a patio, a notch for a shed, and a tree you are keeping all change the cut of the roll and the length of edging. Ask the quote to say it has allowed for those shapes, or to say it has priced a rectangle and the curves are extra. Two rectangles of the same area can still be different jobs if one of them has three edges against a fence and the other has one edge against a wall and a manhole in the middle.

Leave covers visible in the description. A drain cover, a water meter or a stopcock lid that will sit under the new surface needs a decision: a lid you can still lift, or a surface that buries it. This page does not tell you which. It tells you that a quote which never mentions the cover has not priced the same lawn as a quote which cuts a hatch. Do not concrete over a cover to make the lawn look simpler. Do not lift the cover.

Seams show. Ask how the joins will run, in ordinary words, not as a method you are going to attempt. A supply-only roll leaves the seams to you. A laid lawn should say the seams are included. If the firm wants to add a separate "joining" price after you have accepted the main total, that is a second agreement, not a detail of the first [S3].

Dogs, washing lines and a rotary dryer are not jokes on the post. A surface that must take a dog's claws, or a spike from a dryer, is a different brief from a lawn nobody walks on. Say which you have. This page still will not name a product that survives them, because it has no dated public price and no product test to print.

If the garden floods in ordinary rain, say that before anyone talks about a synthetic surface. The grass-replacement answer on the Planning Portal is not a drainage design [S1]. A soakaway or a new gully is another quote. Keep it off the lawn total so you can ask a groundworker about the water without buying a roll you may not want.

Jobs you might post

These are examples, not taken from real job posts.

  • Replace the back lawn with artificial grass. The area is the rectangle you measured. Ask the quote to say whether the base, the edging and the waste are included. You have not lifted the turf.
  • A front lawn is to be replaced, and the house is not listed as far as you know. Ask the firm to price the lawn only, and to leave any paving or kerb work off the total.
  • A previous synthetic lawn is rucked at the edges. Ask for a quote to relay or to replace, as two headings, and ask them not to assume the base underneath is sound.

How to read two lawn quotes

Match the area first, then the base, then the waste. A roll on the drive is not a finished garden. If one quote is silent on edging, ask for the edging to be added or explicitly excluded. Be wary of a trader who will not write the quote down [S3].

Questions about artificial grass

How much does artificial grass cost in Cheshire?

Area, the base, the edging, drainage and waste all change what you are buying. Compare written quotes that measure the same patch and say whether the old turf is taken away, so a supply-only roll is not set beside a laid lawn.

Do I need planning permission to replace a lawn?

In most cases, no, and that is not a promise about your plot. The Planning Portal says that in most cases neither planning permission nor building control approval is required to replace grass with artificial grass. If you live in a protected area such as a conservation area, or in a listed building, the same answer says to contact the local planning authority to check whether any consents are required.

Is this the same rule as paving the front garden?

No. Paving is a different project. The Planning Portal says you do not need permission for a front garden if the surface is permeable, or if rainwater drains to a lawn or border. If more than five square metres of impermeable paving does not drain to a permeable area, permission is needed. Do not use that paving sentence to judge a like-for-like grass replacement.

What should the quote separate?

The roll, the base, the edging, any drainage, and taking the old turf away. A price that stops at supplying the roll is not a price to leave a finished lawn. Citizens Advice says the written quote should show a fixed total and a breakdown. Ask which of those lines you would be accepting.

What about a dropped kerb?

A dropped kerb is a separate council application, not a line on a grass quote. If the contractor mentions crossing the pavement, ask them to leave that out of the lawn total. This page does not apply for a kerb and does not tell you the council's fee.

Does QuoteZila check landscapers?

No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.

Can I post a lawn job?

Yes. Give the rough area, say whether the old turf stays or goes, and add a Cheshire postcode. Up to five matched local businesses can quote. QuoteZila is free for customers and local businesses.
