What changes the price of carpet for stairs?
A stair carpet quote is driven by the shape of the staircase, whether you want a fitted carpet or a runner, the carpet and underlay chosen, and how much old carpet and gripper has to come up. This guide does not print a price per step, so compare quotes line by line.
Last reviewed:Why do stairs cost more to carpet than a room?
Stairs use less carpet than most rooms, but they take far longer to fit. Every step has a tread, a riser and a nosing, and the carpet has to be stretched tight and fixed at each one. A room is a flat rectangle. A staircase is a series of small rectangles, each one fitted by hand.
That is why a stair carpet quote can look high for the amount of carpet involved. Most of the cost is labour and skill, not material.
This guide does not print a price per step or a price per flight. It explains what each fitter should write down, so you can compare quotes on the same terms. Our flooring fitters page covers the trade.
QuoteZila starts in Cheshire, with Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach first, and anyone in the UK can post a stair carpet job.
What about the staircase changes the quote?
Straight steps or winders. A straight flight with identical steps is the quickest to fit. Winders, the tapered steps where a staircase turns, each need their own piece cut and fitted. A staircase with three or four winders is a clearly longer job. Our measuring stairs for carpet page explains how winders are measured.
Open sides and spindles. If one side of the staircase is open, with a handrail and spindles, the carpet has to be finished neatly at that edge. It may be wrapped round the end of each tread, bound, or stopped short as a runner. Each method takes different time.
Half-landings. A small landing partway up, where the stairs change direction, is measured and fitted like a tiny room between two flights.
The top landing. Usually priced as a separate small floor. If it joins a bedroom or bathroom doorway, a door bar is needed at each one.
Steepness and width. Very narrow or very steep stairs are harder to work on. Extra-wide stairs may need a carpet from a wider roll.
The condition of the stairs. Loose treads, creaking risers or damaged nosings should be fixed before the carpet goes on. That is carpentry, and some fitters will say it needs a carpenter first.
Fitted carpet or a runner?
A fitted stair carpet covers each step from wall to wall, or wall to spindles. It is fixed with gripper at the back of each tread and at the bottom of each riser, with underlay on each tread.
A runner is a narrower strip that leaves a band of bare tread showing at each side. It is held either with hidden gripper or with stair rods across the back of each tread. The bare edges have to look good, so the treads may need sanding, painting or varnishing before the runner goes on.
| Choice | What a clear quote says | Why it changes the cost |
|---|---|---|
| Fitted carpet | Product name, roll width and the length needed for the flight | Each step is cut and stretched by hand |
| Runner | Width of runner, whether edges are bound, and who prepares the treads | Binding and tread preparation are separate tasks |
| Stair rods | Number and finish, if any, and who supplies them | One rod per step adds parts and fitting time |
| Underlay | Product, and whether each tread gets its own piece | Stair underlay is cut and fixed step by step |
| Winders | How many, and that they are cut individually | Each winder uses more carpet and more time |
| Landing | Area, and how many door bars | Usually a separate small floor |
| Uplift | Old carpet, underlay, gripper, tacks and staples lifted and taken away [S3] | Old stair carpet has fixings on every step |
| Repairs | Any loose treads or nosings fixed first, and by whom | Carpet cannot hide a loose step for long |
| VAT | Included or added. Registration is required above £90,000 of taxable turnover in the last 12 months [S2] | Totals must compare like with like |
Which carpet works on stairs?
Stairs take heavy wear, and the nosing of each step takes the most of it. Ask the shop whether the carpet you like is recommended for stairs. Some are sold for bedrooms only.
Ask how the pile you like will look once it wraps round a nosing, and how it is expected to wear there. A carpet with a strong pattern or bold lines needs extra care so the pattern runs straight down the flight. Pattern matching can mean more carpet and more fitting time.
Underlay matters too. Stair underlay should help the carpet grip the step, not let it roll. Ask the fitter what they plan to use on each tread.
Why does a well-fitted stair carpet matter for safety?
A loose stair carpet, a lifting edge on a nosing, or a rug at the top or bottom of the stairs is a trip risk. The NHS falls guidance lists things you could trip on, such as loose wires or rugs, among the things to avoid at home [S4].
That is a good reason not to choose a fitter on price alone. A carpet that is stretched tight and fixed at every step stays put. One that is fixed only at the top and bottom will creep and loosen.
If someone in the house is unsteady on the stairs, mention it in your job. A fitter can suggest a carpet and finish that is easier to see and grip.
What should you ask about the old carpet?
Old stair carpet comes up with its underlay, gripper and a lot of tacks and staples. Someone has to pull every one, or the new carpet will sit on top of them.
GOV.UK's waste code says that when a tradesperson does work on your property, they are responsible for the waste they produce, including its transport and disposal, and its cost should be included in what they charge [S3]. If you take up the old carpet yourself, the code says you must take all reasonable measures to make sure you only transfer it to an authorised person [S3].
Ask whether uplift and disposal are included, and whether the fitter will check each step for loose fixings once the old carpet is off.
How do you compare stair carpet quotes?
Send each fitter the same information: photos of the staircase from the bottom and from the landing, the number of steps, how many winders, whether one side is open, and the carpet you want. If you have measured, attach your sketch, but ask them to measure before cutting.
Citizens Advice suggests trying to get written quotes from at least 3 different traders, and says some traders charge for quotes, so ask about this first [S1]. It says a quote is a fixed price, while an estimate is just a rough guess and you might end up paying more [S1].
If the shop asks for a deposit to buy the carpet, Citizens Advice suggests offering to buy materials yourself instead, so at least you own them if something goes wrong [S1]. Always get a receipt for any deposit [S1].
If the work is poor, Citizens Advice says the Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires services to be provided with reasonable care and skill [S5]. A written quote that lists every line makes it easier to show what was agreed.
The carpet calculator guide covers rooms, and carpet fitting costs explains the wider fitting price.
What can you do before the fitter arrives?
A little preparation keeps the day simple and the quote accurate.
- Clear the stairs and landing. Pictures low on the stairwell wall, a stair gate, shoes and baskets all need to move.
- Think about the doors. If the landing carpet is changing, bedroom and bathroom doors may need trimming to clear it. Ask whether that is included.
- Plan for the hall. Where the stair carpet meets the hall floor, decide whether the hall is being changed too, so the bottom step finishes neatly.
- Agree the start time and length of the job. You cannot use the stairs freely while the carpet is being fitted, so plan around it.
- Keep any spare. Ask the fitter to leave a usable offcut, which can help with a repair to a worn nosing later.
Jobs you might post
These are examples, not taken from real job posts.
- "Straight flight and top landing. Old carpet to come up and go away. Please quote to supply and fit a hard-wearing plain carpet."
- "Staircase with four winders at the bottom and one open side with spindles. Please say how you would finish the open edge."
- "I'd like a bound runner with rods on painted treads. Please quote for the runner, rods and fitting, and say who prepares the treads."

Questions about stair carpet costs
How much does it cost to carpet stairs?
This guide does not print a figure. A short straight flight with a plain carpet and a simple landing is a very different job from a staircase with winders, an open side and a patterned runner with brass rods. Ask each fitter to split the carpet, underlay, fitting and uplift into separate lines.
Is a stair runner cheaper than a fitted stair carpet?
Not always. A runner uses a narrower strip of carpet, but the edges are often bound, the treads either side may need painting or sanding, and rods add to the cost. Ask for both options on the same quote if you are unsure.
Does the landing have to be done at the same time?
Not always, but it usually makes sense. The stair carpet normally finishes at the top nosing, where it meets the landing. If the landing carpet is old or a different colour, doing both together avoids a join between new and old right at the top of the stairs.
Should the quote include taking up the old stair carpet?
Ask for it as its own line. Stair carpet comes with gripper, tacks and staples on every step. GOV.UK's waste code says a tradesperson who works on your property is responsible for the waste they produce, and its disposal cost should be included in what they charge.
Does VAT change the price?
It can. A business must register for VAT if its taxable turnover for the last 12 months goes over £90,000. Ask whether VAT is included in the total, so the quotes compare like with like.
How many quotes should I get?
Citizens Advice suggests trying to get written quotes from at least 3 different traders before you decide on one. Send each fitter the same photos and the same carpet choice.
Does QuoteZila check carpet fitters?
No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.
