What changes the cost of carpet fitting?
The cost of carpet fitting depends on the area and shape of the rooms, whether there are stairs or landings, the underlay and gripper, lifting and disposing of old flooring, any floor preparation and moving furniture. This page does not print a price, because we could not find two dated public sources that agree on one.
Last reviewed:What carpet fitting involves
Fitting a carpet is more than rolling it out. A fitter usually lifts and takes away the old carpet and underlay, checks and prepares the floor, fixes gripper strips around the edges, lays underlay, cuts and stretches the carpet so it sits tight, joins it where needed, trims it to the skirting and fits door bars or thresholds. On stairs, each tread and riser is fitted by hand.
QuoteZila is starting in Cheshire, with Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach among the first towns, and anyone in the UK can post a job. We have not put a price on this page. The fitting prices we found came from shops and fitters we cannot link to as dated public sources, and they were set out in different ways, so this guide explains what changes a fitting quote and how to compare them.
How carpet fitting is priced
Fitters and shops price in different ways, which makes quotes hard to compare:
- By area. A rate for each square metre or square yard of carpet fitted.
- By room. A set price for a bedroom, a living room or a hall.
- By job. One price for the whole house or a group of rooms.
- Supply and fit. The carpet, underlay and fitting in one price.
- Fitting only. You buy the carpet and underlay, and the fitter charges for labour and sundries.
Ask each quote to say which method it uses. Then compare the total for the same rooms, not the headline rate.
What changes a carpet fitting quote
| What changes | Why it matters | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Area and shape | Odd shapes, bay windows and alcoves mean more cutting and waste | What area have you measured, and how much waste is allowed? |
| Stairs and landings | Each step is fitted by hand, and winders take longer | Are the stairs priced separately? |
| Underlay | Different underlays suit different rooms and heating | Which underlay, and is it included? |
| Gripper and door bars | New gripper and thresholds may be needed | Are gripper, door bars and sundries included? |
| Uplift and disposal | Old carpet and underlay have to be lifted and taken away | Is uplift and disposal included? |
| Floor preparation | Uneven, damaged or squeaky floors need work first | What preparation is needed, and who does it? |
| Moving furniture | Heavy furniture takes time to move and replace | Will you move furniture, and is there a charge? |
| Doors | Thicker carpet can stop doors closing | Will doors need trimming, and who does it? |
| Pattern matching | Patterned carpet, including bold lines and checks, needs careful matching | Is pattern matching allowed for in the price? |
| Joins and seams | Wide rooms may need joins in the carpet | Where will any joins be? |
| VAT | Register if taxable turnover for the last 12 months goes over £90,000 [S4] | Does the total include VAT? |
If one quote is much lower, check uplift and disposal, gripper, door bars, stairs and furniture. Those are the extras most often left out of a headline price.
Underlay, gripper and the floor underneath
Underlay sits between the floor and the carpet. It makes the carpet feel softer, helps it last and adds some warmth and sound reduction. Some underlays are made for stairs or heavy-traffic areas, and some for use over underfloor heating.
Gripper is the strip of wood with angled pins that holds the carpet edges tight. Old gripper can often stay if it is sound and in the right place, but if it is loose, damaged or the wrong height, new gripper may be fitted.
The floor. Carpet hides a lot, but it cannot hide everything. Squeaky boards, loose boards, gaps and uneven concrete may need attention first. A fitter may suggest a joiner for boards, or a floor screed or latex levelling on concrete.
Underfloor heating. The Energy Saving Trust says carpet can be laid over underfloor heating, but it makes the room slower to warm up, and suggests checking the tog rating of the carpet and underlay so they are not too thick for heat to pass through [S2]. Tell the fitter and the shop if you have underfloor heating before you choose.
Old flooring and older homes
In older homes, carpets may sit on top of earlier floor coverings. HSE says asbestos was added to PVC and thermoplastic floor tiles and sheet materials, and that old tiles can be hidden under carpets [S1]. They can be hard to identify.
If the fitter finds old tiles under the carpet, ask them not to lift, break or sand them until you know what they are. Laying new underlay and carpet over sound tiles may be an option, or you can have them tested first.

Stairs, landings and runners
Stairs are where fitting time goes up the most. Things that affect a stair quote:
- Straight stairs are the simplest.
- Winders, where the steps turn a corner, need each step cut separately.
- Open-sided stairs need the carpet finished neatly on the open edge.
- Runners, where the carpet covers the middle of the stairs and leaves the sides showing, need careful setting out and often stair rods.
- Patterned carpet needs matching from step to step.
- Landings may join the stair carpet or a bedroom carpet, which affects where seams go.
Ask for the stairs and landing to be listed separately on the quote, with the type of fitting described.
Choosing carpet for each room
The carpet you pick can change the fitting as well as the material cost. Think about each room on its own:
- Hall, stairs and landing. These take the most foot traffic, so a hard-wearing carpet and a firm underlay usually suit them. Darker or flecked colours hide dirt better.
- Living room. Comfort matters, but so does wear in front of the sofa and in doorways.
- Bedrooms. Softer, thicker carpets are common, because the wear is lighter.
- Children's rooms. Look for carpets that clean easily.
- Rooms with pets. Loop-pile carpets can snag on claws, so ask the shop about pile types.
- Kitchens and bathrooms. Carpet is rarely the right choice where there is water. A vinyl or tiled floor may suit better.
Ask the shop or fitter whether the carpet you like is suitable for the room, and whether it needs a particular underlay or fitting method. Wide carpets can avoid joins in larger rooms, which may save fitting time.
Getting ready for the fitter
You can make the job quicker and the quote more accurate:
- Measure roughly each room, so you can sense-check the fitter's figures.
- Decide on furniture. Will you empty the rooms, or do you need the fitter to move things?
- Check doors. Look at the gap under each door. Thicker carpet and underlay may need doors trimming.
- Lift nothing you are unsure about, especially old tiles under existing carpet.
- Plan for pets and children while the fitter is working, because knives and gripper pins are sharp.
- Ask about waste. Who takes the old carpet away, and is it included?
How to compare carpet fitting quotes
Citizens Advice says a quote is a fixed price, while an estimate is only a guess [S3]. It suggests written quotes from at least three traders, and says some traders charge for a quote, so ask first [S3]. For carpet fitting, ask each quote to state:
- The rooms, stairs and landings included, and the measured area.
- Whether the price is supply and fit or fitting only.
- The underlay, gripper, door bars and other sundries.
- Uplift and disposal of the old carpet and underlay.
- Any floor preparation, and who does it.
- Moving furniture, and trimming doors.
- The fitting date and how long the job will take.
- Whether the price includes VAT. A business must register for VAT when its taxable turnover goes over £90,000 [S4].
Jobs you might post
These are examples, not taken from real job posts.
- "Carpet bought for two bedrooms and the landing. Need a fitter for uplift, gripper, underlay and fitting."
- "Straight staircase and hall. Looking for supply and fit with a hard-wearing carpet."
- "Old carpet in the dining room has tiles underneath. Want new carpet fitted without lifting the tiles."
Say which rooms, whether you have bought the carpet, whether there are stairs, and anything under the old carpet that you know about.

Questions about carpet fitting prices
How much does carpet fitting cost?
This page does not print a figure. Fitters may price by area, by room or as a fixed job, and stairs, underlay, gripper, removal of old flooring, floor preparation and moving furniture all change the total. Ask for a written quote from a measured visit, and check what it includes.
Is carpet fitting included when I buy carpet?
Sometimes. Some shops include fitting, some charge for it separately and some sell carpet only. Ask whether the price you are given covers the carpet, underlay, gripper, fitting, door bars, uplift of the old carpet and disposal, so you can compare.
Why do stairs cost more to carpet?
Each step has to be cut, fitted and fixed by hand, and winders, landings and open-sided stairs take more time. Stair rods, runners and patterned carpets that need matching also add work. Ask for the stairs to be priced as a separate line.
Can carpet go over underfloor heating?
It can. The Energy Saving Trust says carpet can be laid over underfloor heating but makes rooms slower to warm up, and suggests checking the tog rating of the carpet and underlay so heat can still pass through. Tell the fitter about the heating before you choose.
What if there are old tiles under the carpet?
Leave them alone until you know what they are. HSE says asbestos was added to some PVC and thermoplastic floor tiles, and that old tiles can be hidden under carpets. Ask the fitter to lay over them or have them tested, rather than lifting them.
Should I get more than one quote?
Yes. Citizens Advice suggests getting written quotes from at least three traders, and says a quote is a fixed price while an estimate is only a guess. Make sure each quote is for the same rooms, underlay and extras.
Does QuoteZila check the businesses?
No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.
