What changes the cost of caravan decking?

Caravan decking costs depend on what the park or site allows, the size and height of the deck, whether the frame is freestanding or fixed, the boards, and the steps, handrails and gates around it. This guide prints no price, so check the site rules first and then compare quotes for the same design.

Decking for caravans and park homes

A deck turns the space beside a static caravan or park home into somewhere to sit, and makes getting in and out easier, especially when the door is well above the ground. It is a common addition on holiday parks and residential sites alike.

Caravan decking is different from a garden deck in a few ways:

  • The site sets the rules. On most parks, the site owner decides what can be built, how big, and from what.
  • The caravan may need to move. Many parks want decks to stand on their own frame so the unit can be taken out or serviced.
  • Space is shared. The gaps between units matter for access and safety, so decks often have to stay within set limits.
  • The door is high. Steps and handrails are part of most designs.

QuoteZila is starting in Cheshire, with Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach among the first towns, and anyone in the UK can post a job. This guide does not print a price. It explains what changes the cost of caravan decking, the rules to check first, and how to compare quotes.

Check the park rules first

Before you ask for quotes, find out what your park or site allows. That one step can save the cost of a deck that has to come down.

GOV.UK says privately owned park home sites must have a licence from the local council, which the owner must display, and that licences usually have conditions covering things like the number of homes, services and amenities, and health and safety [S1]. Holiday parks have their own licences and park rules too, so the same question applies: what does the site allow?

Ask the site owner, in writing:

  • whether a deck is allowed on your pitch, and how big
  • how far it can extend towards neighbouring units
  • whether it must be freestanding
  • whether materials, colours or balustrade styles are set
  • whether the park needs to approve your installer
  • whether drawings must be approved before work starts

The Planning Portal's permitted development rules for decking are written for houses, and say they do not apply to flats or other buildings [S2]. So the familiar garden decking rules do not simply carry over to a caravan pitch. The park's own planning permission and licence usually decide what is allowed.

Freestanding frames and the caravan itself

Most caravan decks are built as freestanding structures that sit next to the unit rather than being bolted to it. That matters because:

  • the caravan may need to be moved, levelled or taken away
  • fixing into the caravan wall or chassis could cause damage
  • park rules often ask for it

A freestanding deck still needs a firm frame. On grass or soft ground, it may stand on adjustable feet or pads so it can be levelled. Ask each installer how the frame will stand, how it will be levelled, and whether it can be taken apart if the unit moves.

Leave access to the underside of the caravan, to any service points and to anything the park or an engineer may need to reach. Ask the installer to plan a removable panel if the deck would block access.

Boards and upkeep on a holiday home

A holiday caravan may stand empty for weeks, so upkeep matters. Treated softwood decks need cleaning and treating, and can get slippery in shade. Composite boards usually cost more to buy but need less looking after.

Ask each installer:

  • which boards they would use, and why for a caravan
  • how slippery the boards are when wet
  • how the deck should be cleaned between visits
  • what to do before winter, if the park closes

Steps, handrails and gates

Caravan doors are usually well above the ground, so steps are a big part of the job. A wide landing outside the door, steps with a handrail and a gate across the top can make the deck safer for children, older visitors and dogs, but each adds cost.

If anyone using the caravan has trouble with steps, ask about a gentler rise, wider treads or a ramp. A ramp takes more space, which the park rules may limit.

Who arranges what with the park

On many parks, the work goes more smoothly if someone takes charge of the paperwork. Before you hire, agree whether you or the installer will send the drawing to the park office, book a delivery slot, and confirm working hours. If the park has quiet hours or closes in winter, that affects when the job can happen and how long it takes. Put what you agree in writing, so nothing falls between you, the installer and the park.

Caravan decking in Cheshire

When you post a caravan decking job, say where the caravan is, which park, the size of the unit, the height of the door above the ground and what the park allows. Include photos of the pitch. An installer covering Crewe, Nantwich, Sandbach or further afield can then judge access to the site and the frame needed.

Your park office is the place to check the rules for your pitch. Anyone in the UK can still post a job or register a business on QuoteZila, so you can also post for a caravan elsewhere.

What to have ready before you ask for quotes

  • the park's rules or written approval for a deck
  • the size of the caravan and where the doors are
  • the height of the door above the ground
  • photos of the pitch and any existing steps or deck
  • the size and shape of deck you want
  • your preferred boards and balustrade
  • any limits on working days or deliveries
  • your postcode, or the park's, and when the work could be done

How to compare caravan decking quotes

Check each quote for:

  1. The size, height and shape, and that it fits the park rules.
  2. How the frame stands, and whether it is freestanding.
  3. The boards, balustrade and gate.
  4. Steps and landing.
  5. Removal of any old deck or steps.
  6. Who deals with the park office.
  7. Whether VAT is included, and whether the price is fixed.

Citizens Advice suggests getting written quotes from at least three different traders before choosing [S3]. It also says a quote is a fixed price, while an estimate is a rough guess [S3]. Ask which you have, and get the park's approval in writing before paying a deposit.

Jobs you might post

These are examples, not taken from real job posts. "Freestanding composite deck along the side of a static caravan, with steps, handrail and a gate. Park has approved the size." Or: "Replace rotten timber steps and a small deck at a holiday caravan. Park rules attached." Or: "Wrap-around deck for a park home. Please quote and send a drawing for the site owner to approve."

Questions about caravan decking costs

How much does caravan decking cost?

This guide does not print a price. The size and height, the frame, the boards, steps, handrails and gates, and any rules the park sets all change the total. Ask each installer to quote for the same design, and check what the park allows before you order.

Do I need permission to put decking round a static caravan?

Usually from the park or site owner. Many parks have their own rules about decks, steps and structures between units. On park home sites, GOV.UK says privately owned sites must have a licence from the local council, usually with conditions on health and safety. Ask the site owner before work starts.

Does planning permission for decking apply to a caravan?

The Planning Portal's permitted development rules for decking are written for houses, so they do not simply carry over to a caravan pitch. The park's planning permission and site licence usually set what can be built. Ask the site owner or the council.

Should caravan decking be freestanding?

Often, yes. Many parks prefer or require decks that stand on their own frame rather than being fixed to the caravan, so the caravan can be moved or serviced. Ask the park what it requires and tell each installer.

What boards are used for caravan decking?

Treated softwood and composite boards are both common. Composite needs less upkeep, which suits a holiday home that is empty for weeks at a time. Some parks set colours or materials, so check before choosing.

Can the park owner insist on its own decking firm?

Some parks have preferred contractors or approve firms before they work on site. Read your agreement and the park rules, and ask the park in writing whether you can use your own installer.

Does QuoteZila check the installers?

No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.
