How much does a locksmith cost in Cheshire?
In Cheshire, a locksmith's price depends on the hour, the lock and whether the price is fixed or charged by the hour. A Cheshire hourly price is needs source; example prices from the Master Locksmiths Association, checked 14 Oct 2026, include £85 an hour [S2][S3] and are not a Cheshire price.
Last reviewed:What does a locksmith price in Cheshire include?
In Cheshire, a locksmith price is the cost of getting a particular door, lock or key problem sorted. It is not a single national fee. The usual pieces are labour, any call-out or minimum charge, the lock or parts, and VAT if the business is registered. Two locksmiths can name different totals for the same uPVC door in Crewe, or the same timber front door in Nantwich, because one has folded the parts into the headline number and the other has left them out.
QuoteZila is starting in Cheshire, with Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach among the first towns. A figure published for London, or for a council handy-person service in Surrey, is not a price for a house in Sandbach. Use those figures to understand the shape of a quote. Then ask locksmiths who cover your postcode for their own written prices.
Which hourly figures are dated?
The Master Locksmiths Association publishes its own price pages. We read them on 14 October 2026. They are the association's examples, drawn from locksmiths it lists, and they are not a survey of Cheshire. Where two of those pages state the same hourly figure, it is in the table. Where a job price appears on only one page, the cell says needs source.
| What the price is | Dated public figure | What to ask in Cheshire |
|---|---|---|
| Daytime hourly labour | Example price from the Master Locksmiths Association, checked 14 Oct 2026: £85 per hour before 6pm on the call-out page, and from £85 per hour on the emergency page [S2][S3]. Not a Cheshire price. | Whether the first hour is charged in full if the work takes less time |
| After 8pm until midnight | Example price from the Master Locksmiths Association, checked 14 Oct 2026: £103 per hour on the call-out page, and from £103 per hour after 8pm on the emergency page [S2][S3]. Not a Cheshire price. | The total for your hour, including parts, before anyone travels |
| After midnight | Example price from the Master Locksmiths Association, checked 14 Oct 2026: £153 per hour on both the call-out page and the emergency page [S2][S3]. Not a Cheshire price. | Whether a weekend or bank holiday is priced differently, because that figure is needs source |
| A separate call-out fee | needs source | What it covers, and whether it comes off the bill if you go ahead [S1][S2] |
| Changing a euro cylinder, mortice lock or night latch | needs source | A written price for your door and the lock you want fitted [S1] |
| Opening a door when you are locked out | needs source | The total before the locksmith sets off, including any parts if the lock has to be replaced |
| A snapped key taken out of a lock | needs source | Whether the lock can be saved, and the price if it cannot |
| VAT on the bill | Only if the business is registered; the registration threshold is £90,000 of taxable turnover [S7] | Whether the total you are given includes VAT |
The price page also says the first hour on site may be charged at the daytime rate, with a lower rate after that [S1]. That page, on its own, does not price a lock change.
Why most job prices stay needs source
The association's 2026 price page gives starting figures for changing locks, opening doors and repairing locks, and it says those figures include VAT [S1]. They are estimates from one page. A second independent public page, read on 14 October 2026, does not repeat those job totals. Publishing them here would make a fair Cheshire quote look high, or a poor one look low, on the strength of a single list.
So the page says needs source for:
- changing a standard euro cylinder, an anti-snap cylinder, a mortice lock, a night latch, a rim cylinder, a patio lock or a garage lock
- opening a house door, removing a snapped key, or replacing lost keys
- repairing a front door, a uPVC gearbox, a window lock, a handle or a patio lock
- the price of a lock on its own, with no labour
- a London hourly rate, and any uplift the price page describes for London
- a bank holiday, Christmas or a weekend afternoon
If you already have a quote for one of those jobs, compare it with other written quotes for the same door. Do not compare it with a number this page has refused to print.
A council schedule is not a locksmith quote
Example prices from Mole Valley District Council (Surrey), checked 14 Oct 2026. The handy person schedule lists a Yale-type exterior door lock at £51.82, a cylinder only on a uPVC or composite exterior door at £42.98, and an additional safety lock on a timber door at £81.60 [S5]. The page says all of those prices include VAT at 20% [S5]. Work that is not on the schedule is £24.00 per hour, inclusive of VAT, with materials added at cost [S5]. These figures are not a Cheshire price.
The council is describing its own handy-person service in Surrey. A locksmith attending a lock-out in Crewe is doing different work, often out of hours, often with a van full of parts. Put the council figures beside a locksmith quote only to see that they are different kinds of price. Then judge the locksmith quote against other locksmith quotes.
How locksmiths build a price
Whatever number you are given, sort it into one of these:
- An hourly rate. You pay for time. Ask for the rate, whether the first hour is a minimum, and what happens in the second hour. The association says the first hour may be charged in full even if the visit is shorter [S2].
- A fixed price for a defined job. Citizens Advice describes a quote as a fixed price, and an estimate as a rough guess [S6]. A fixed price should say which lock, which door and what happens if the lock will not come out cleanly.
- A call-out or minimum charge. The association says this may cover the journey, the first minutes on site, or both, and that many emergency locksmiths do not add a separate call-out fee [S1][S2]. Ask before the visit.
A practical way to line up two quotes is to fill the same blanks:
labour (hours times the rate, or one fixed sum) + any call-out or minimum + the lock and parts + VAT if it is charged = the total
If a blank is empty, that may be why the price looks low. Citizens Advice says a price much lower than the others can mean the work is not the same work, or that the trader does not have the experience the job needs [S6].
What pushes the price up or down
- The hour. Daytime, after 8pm and after midnight are priced differently on the association's pages [S2][S3]. A weekend rate is needs source, so ask for it.
- Where you live. The association says location and travel change the price, and that London can cost more because of congestion and parking [S1][S2]. Cheshire towns are not London. A locksmith coming from the other side of the county may still add travel. Ask.
- The door and the lock. A basic cylinder, an anti-snap cylinder, a multipoint strip and a mortice lock are different jobs. The price page says the lock brand, the security standard and extra work to make a new lock fit can all change the price [S1]. The pounds for each of those are needs source.
- Whether the lock is opened or replaced. Opening a door can be a smaller job than cutting out a failed lock and fitting a new one. If keys are lost, many locksmiths will want the lock changed. Ask which you are buying.
- Parts. Who supplies the lock, and which standard it meets, belongs in the quote. Do not assume a cheap-looking cylinder is the one your insurer wants. What an insurer requires is needs source: read your own policy.
- VAT. A business must register for VAT when taxable turnover goes over £90,000 [S7]. Ask whether the price includes VAT.
What to have ready before you ask
Locksmiths price what they can picture. In Cheshire, give every locksmith the same facts:
- What has happened, in your own words: locked out, lost keys, a snapped key, a break-in, or a lock you want changed after a move.
- The door: timber, uPVC or composite, and whether it is the front, back or a patio.
- The lock if you can see it, or a photo of the edge of the door and the handle. You do not need the brand.
- How urgent it is. If you can wait until daytime, say so, because the hour changes the published rates [S2][S3].
- Your postcode, so the travel is real. A Crewe job and a Sandbach job are not the same journey for every locksmith.
- Whether you are happy to wait for a written quote, or you need someone now. If you need someone now, ask for the total before they leave their base.
For a planned lock change, photos are enough. For a lock-out, stay on the phone until the price is clear. The association's choosing page warns that a very low advertised price can be only the start of the bill [S4].
How to compare locksmith quotes
| What a written quote should say | Why it matters | If it is missing |
|---|---|---|
| The job in your words | Shows the locksmith understood the door and the fault | Ask them to confirm it in writing or by message |
| Fixed total, or rate plus estimated time | A quote is a fixed price and an estimate is a rough guess [S6] | Ask which one you have been given |
| Any call-out or minimum, and what it covers | A frequent surprise on the invoice [S1][S2] | Ask whether it comes off the final price |
| The lock or parts, and who supplies them | Parts vary, and the pounds for a named lock are needs source | Ask for the product to be named |
| Whether VAT is included | The threshold for registration is £90,000 [S7] | Ask for a total including VAT |
| How long the price stays valid | A price can rise for extra work you agree [S6] | Ask them to agree extras before they do them |
| Who will attend | The association warns that some national call centres pass the job on [S4] | Ask for the name of the person coming |
| Insurance | Citizens Advice says to ask to see policies and to check they will not run out before the work finishes [S6] | Ask, and decide yourself |
Citizens Advice suggests written quotes from at least three traders [S6]. For an emergency, three quotes may be unrealistic if you are standing outside. Even then, ask one locksmith to put the total in a text before they travel, and keep that message.
Questions to ask before you accept
- Is that a fixed price or an hourly rate?
- Is the first hour a minimum?
- Is there a call-out fee, and what does it cover?
- Does the price include the lock and VAT?
- Which lock will you fit if the old one cannot be saved?
- Will you do the work yourself?
- What happens if the door is damaged while the lock is opened?
- What insurance do you hold? Citizens Advice suggests asking to see the policies [S6].
Low advertised prices the association names
Example prices named by the Master Locksmiths Association, checked 14 Oct 2026: the choosing page says to be cautious of adverts at £49 and £59, and the emergency page names £49 and £59 among low advertised prices that can be a warning [S3][S4]. These figures are not a Cheshire price, and they are not a target price. The association's point is that a very low advertised number may not be the whole job. Ask what that number covers. If it is only the arrival, the rest of the bill is still unknown.
A price that is far below two other written quotes needs the same caution Citizens Advice gives for home work in general: the work may not be like for like [S6].
There is no government licence
The association says there is no government licensing for locksmiths, that there is no official price list a locksmith must follow, and that anyone can trade as a locksmith [S1][S4]. That is why a published hourly example cannot tell you that a particular person at your door is the right one to hire. Look the business up yourself, ask for the price in writing, and keep the message.
Official and public sources
QuoteZila is not affiliated with these organisations.
- Master Locksmiths Association: the price page, the call-out page, the emergency page and the choosing page are the dated sources for the hourly figures above [S1][S2][S3][S4].
- VAT: GOV.UK explains when a business must register [S7].
- Council handy-person rates: Mole Valley's schedule, read as a Surrey council price list, not as a Cheshire locksmith tariff [S5].
- Quotes, deposits and insurance: Citizens Advice on getting work done at home [S6]. If a deposit is unavoidable, Citizens Advice says not to agree to more than 25% [S6].
This page is general information, not professional or legal advice. QuoteZila does not check Gas Safe, WaterSafe, NFRC, NICEIC or other registrations against the register on your behalf: look them up yourself.
Where this applies. The hourly figures come from the association's pages for the UK, and the council figures come from a Surrey schedule. Consumer rules can differ in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. If you live outside England, check local sources before you rely on the consumer lines on this page. For a Cheshire house, the next step is still a written quote from a locksmith who covers your postcode.

Questions about locksmith prices
How much does a locksmith charge per hour?
A Cheshire hourly price is needs source. Example prices from the Master Locksmiths Association, checked 14 Oct 2026: £85 per hour before 6pm on the call-out page, and a daytime rate from £85 per hour on the emergency page. Those figures are not a Cheshire price. Ask whether the first hour is a minimum even if the work is shorter.
How much is a locksmith call-out charge?
It depends on the locksmith, and we do not publish a separate call-out figure. The association says many locksmiths do not add a call-out fee in normal working hours, and that a fee, where there is one, may cover travel or the first time on site. Ask what it covers, whether it is taken off the final price if you go ahead, and whether VAT is included, before anyone sets off.
What do emergency locksmiths charge after 8pm?
Example prices from the Master Locksmiths Association, checked 14 Oct 2026: £103 per hour from 8pm until midnight on the call-out page, and from £103 per hour after 8pm on the emergency page. After midnight both of those pages give £153 per hour. These figures are not a Cheshire price. A price for a bank holiday or a weekend afternoon is needs source. Ask for the total, including parts, before you agree to a visit.
Why is the price to change a lock marked needs source?
The association's 2026 price page lists starting figures for euro cylinders, mortice locks and night latches, but those job figures appear on that one page. This guide does not repeat a price that has only one dated public source. Ask each locksmith for a written price for your door, your lock and the hour you need them, and compare the answers.
Is a council handy-person rate the same as a locksmith quote?
No. A Cheshire lock price is needs source. Example prices from Mole Valley District Council (Surrey), checked 14 Oct 2026: a Yale-type exterior lock at £51.82, a uPVC or composite cylinder at £42.98 and an extra timber-door safety lock at £81.60. These figures are not a Cheshire price. Get local written quotes.
Do locksmiths have to be licensed?
The Master Locksmiths Association says there is no government licensing for locksmiths, so a locksmith can charge any price, and anyone can trade as one. Ask who will attend and what the price includes. The safety line on this page is the limit of what QuoteZila says about checks.
Can I get locksmith quotes through QuoteZila?
Yes. Describe the door, the lock if you know it, and your Cheshire postcode. Up to five matched local businesses can send quotes. QuoteZila is free for customers and local businesses. How many replies you get depends on how many locksmiths have joined near you.
