How much does driveway cleaning cost in Cheshire?
In Cheshire, cleaning a driveway is the price of washing the surface you already have. A block-paved drive and a tarmac drive are different jobs, and laying a new surface is a different quote again.
Last reviewed:A wash of what is already there
Cleaning a driveway in Cheshire means the surface in front of the house is staying, and someone is being asked to wash it. Drives in Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach are the ones this page has in mind, from a short block-paved strip to a longer tarmac run. This page does not print a figure, because we could not find two dated public sources that agree on one. Name the material you can see, the rough shape of the drive, and the marks you care about. Oil under where the car sits, green growth in the joints, and tyre tracks are observations. They are not a treatment this page will prescribe.
A path to the side door, a patio that shares the same fall, and the public pavement are easy to sweep into the same sentence. Put them in or leave them out on purpose. A quote for "the drive" that silently includes the council pavement is a different job from one that stops at your boundary. This page does not tell you that you may wash the pavement. If you are unsure whose slab it is, leave it out of the brief.
Laying is a different permission from washing
The Planning Portal explains when a new or replacement driveway needs planning permission [S4]. Read it as a page about laying. It says a driveway of any size needs no planning permission if the surface is permeable or porous, or if the rainwater is directed to a lawn or border to drain naturally [S4]. Where the area is more than five square metres, planning permission is needed for traditional impermeable driveways that do not provide for the water to run to a permeable area [S4]. The allowances apply to houses. They do not apply to flats and maisonettes [S4].
None of that is a rule about hiring someone to clean. Washing does not, on this page, become "laying a drive". If the person you hire wants to take the surface up, change it from impermeable to permeable, or rebuild the fall toward the road, you have left this guide. The driveway cost page is the one for a new or replacement surface. Driveways and paving is the trade page for that build. Keep the wash on its own quote so the totals mean something.
If your home is a flat, do not borrow the house allowances. Ask the council before anyone relays a shared forecourt. Cleaning a marked bay, if you are allowed to by whoever manages the land, is still not the Portal's laying rule.
Tell the contractor what your drive is made of
Say whether the drive is block paving, tarmac, concrete slabs, gravel, or a resin surface. Each one makes a contractor think about a different risk of damage. This page will not tell them, or you, which chemical to use, which pressure to set, or how to kill moss. Ask the contractor to say what they will apply, what they will keep off the plants, and what they will do about water running toward a door or a neighbour's garden. If they will not say, you cannot compare them with a firm that has written it down.
Oil, rust marks and weeds in the joints can be listed as optional lines. A basic wash that leaves the oil in place is a fair quote. It is a poor comparison with a quote that has priced stain treatment. Photograph the marks from standing height. You do not need to treat them yourself the week before to "show willing".
Gravel that has spread onto the pavement is a containment question as much as a cleaning one. Say if you want the gravel put back and the edge redefined. That can be more than a wash. Ask for it as its own line so you can decline it.
The visit, the advert, and the total
Some firms advertise no call-out charge. The Advertising Standards Authority's advice is that this is fair only if they do not charge for travelling to you, for the initial look at the job, or for any other sum before the work is agreed [S3]. A look around the drive that becomes an invoice, even though you said no, does not match that claim. Ask.
Citizens Advice wants a quote, meaning a fixed price, rather than a rough estimate left open [S1]. Be wary of a trader who will not write it [S1]. Ask if they charge to prepare the quote [S1]. Written quotes from at least 3 traders are worth having when the drive is large or the stains are the real job [S1]. Look for a fixed total, what it includes, how long the price lasts, whether VAT is included, and when it can go up [S1]. If the offer is only time on site, ask how long they have allowed [S1]. A daily rate without days and hours written down can be strung out [S1].
VAT registration follows taxable turnover. It is required over £90,000 in the last 12 months, or when the business expects to cross £90,000 in the next 30 days [S2]. Ask the wash quote to say if VAT is included. The threshold is not your drive.
If a deposit to the firm cannot be avoided, do not agree more than 25%, and get a receipt [S1]. Pay by card where you can, not cash for the whole visit in advance [S1]. Check insurance yourself [S1]. A much lower price can be a smaller area, or a firm that has left the oil out [S1].
| Line | Make them write it |
|---|---|
| Surface | Block, tarmac, concrete, gravel or resin, named |
| Area in words | Drive only, or drive plus path |
| Stains | In the price, or optional |
| Plants and doors | What they will shield |
| If you say no | Whether the look is charged [S3] |
| Laying | Out of scope, unless a separate quote [S4] |
| VAT | Next to the £90,000 threshold [S2] |
| Deposit | 25% limit if a deposit cannot be avoided [S1] |
Cars, drains and the day itself
Say where the car will go. A price that needs the drive empty from 8 until noon is not the price for a car that cannot be moved. Shared drives and a neighbour who parks half on your side should be mentioned so the firm does not arrive to a blocked job. You are describing the morning, not deciding a boundary dispute.
Gullies and a channel drain that is full of grit are worth a sentence. Ask if clearing them is included. Water has to go somewhere while they wash. If your only outlet is toward the house, say so. This is not the Portal's rule about a new impermeable driveway [S4]. It is a practical note so the hall floor stays dry.

After the water has gone
A washed drive can look uneven where a car covered one half for years and weather bleached the other. Say if you still want the shaded half included. Ask what the firm will do if the surface begins to fret, or if jointing sand is rinsed out of block paving while they work. This page does not tell you to sweep that sand back or to refill a joint. If they think the joints need filler, ask for that as an optional line you can decline. It is not the wash, and it is not a new driveway.
A sealant after the wash is the same kind of optional line. No sealant figure is printed here. Accepting it does not turn the job into laying a surface, and it does not put you inside the planning rule for an impermeable drive [S4]. If the conversation moves to taking the drive up, stop and use a separate quote.
Jobs you might post
These are examples, not taken from real job posts.
- Wash a block-paved drive. Oil stain under the usual parking spot listed as optional. No lifting of blocks. Photo from the pavement.
- Wash a tarmac drive and the path to the side door. State that the public pavement is excluded.
- Wash only. The householder has been told the drive may need relaying later. That relaying is not this quote.
Putting two wash quotes together
Match surface, area and stain treatment. Then look at the totals. If one quote has become a new surface, it belongs with driveway cost, not in this column.

Questions about cleaning a driveway
How much does driveway cleaning cost in Cheshire?
A short block-paved drive and a long tarmac one are different areas, and oil marks or a side path can sit inside one quote and outside another. Compare quotes that name the same surface and the same extras. Washing the drive is a different brief from laying a new one.
Does washing a drive need planning permission?
The Planning Portal page about paving a front garden is about laying a surface, not about washing one. A new or replacement driveway of any size needs no planning permission if it is permeable, or if rainwater is directed to a lawn or border to drain naturally. If the area is more than five square metres, permission is needed for a traditional impermeable driveway that does not drain to a permeable area. Those allowances are for houses, not flats and maisonettes.
What if the quote visit is advertised with no call-out charge?
The Advertising Standards Authority says a no call-out claim is fair only when the firm charges nothing for travel, nothing for the first look, and nothing else before you agree the work. Ask before they come out.
Should VAT be on the quote?
Ask them to say so. A business must register for VAT if taxable turnover for the last 12 months goes over £90,000, or if it expects to go over £90,000 in the next 30 days. That threshold is not a price for washing a drive.
When has the job stopped being a wash?
When the quote starts lifting slabs, laying a new surface, or changing where the rain goes. That is a driveway build, not a clean. Keep it on a separate quote so you are not comparing a wash with a new drive.
Does QuoteZila check driveway cleaners?
No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.
Can I post driveway cleaning on QuoteZila?
Yes. Name the surface and the town, and add a photo from the pavement. Up to five matched local businesses can quote. QuoteZila is free for customers and local businesses.
