What changes the cost of a plumber for a blocked toilet?

In Cheshire, the cost of a plumber for a blocked toilet depends on where the blockage is, what it takes to clear it, the time of day and whether there is a call-out fee. We print no price, so ask what the visit covers before anyone comes, and check first whether the fault could be in a public sewer.

Why blocked toilet prices vary so much

A blocked toilet sounds like one job, but the cause can be anywhere from the bend inside the pan to a drain under the garden. A plumber who arrives to find too much paper just past the outlet may be done quickly. One who finds wet wipes, a child's toy or tree roots further down the pipe may need different tools and much more time.

That is why a sensible quote for a blocked toilet usually comes in two parts: what the first visit costs, and what happens if the blockage turns out to be bigger than expected.

QuoteZila is starting in Cheshire, with Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach among the first towns. This guide prints no price. It explains what changes the cost and what to ask before you book.

Where the blockage might be

  • In the pan. The most common place. Paper or an object is stuck in the bend at the back of the toilet. Water rises in the bowl when you flush.
  • In the branch pipe. The pipe from the toilet to the soil stack or the main drain. Other fittings may still drain normally.
  • In the main drain. The pipe that takes waste from the whole house. Several fittings drain slowly, and water may back up in a downstairs shower or an outside gully.
  • In a shared sewer or the public sewer. If neighbours have the same problem at the same time, the fault may not be on your property at all.

Ofwat says most, but not all, pipes within an individual property boundary are the owner's responsibility, and that water companies keep maps of the sewers and mains they are responsible for [S1]. If you think the problem is shared, contact your water company before paying for a plumber.

What a plumber might use

The tool decides much of the time, and so much of the price.

  • Plunger. A heavy-duty toilet plunger can clear many pan blockages.
  • Toilet auger. A short flexible cable fed through the pan to break up or pull out a blockage in the bend.
  • Drain rods. Lengths of rod pushed through an inspection chamber to clear the main drain.
  • Drain camera. A small camera on a cable that shows what is in the pipe and where. It helps when the cause is unclear or keeps coming back.
  • High-pressure jetting. Water at pressure to clear grease, scale or debris along a run of pipe. Often done by drainage firms rather than general plumbers.
  • Taking the toilet off. Occasionally the pan has to come off the floor to reach an object stuck in the outlet.

If a plumber says the job needs a camera or jetting, ask whether they do that themselves or whether a drainage firm is needed. For more on the cable tools, see what a plumbing snake does.

Call-out fees and out-of-hours visits

Many blocked toilet visits are booked in a hurry, and that is when call-out fees and out-of-hours rates matter most. Ask what the visit fee covers: travel only, or the first half hour or hour of work.

The Advertising Standards Authority says a "no call-out charge" claim is only acceptable if the business does not charge for travel or the first diagnosis, and takes no fee before the customer agrees to the work [S2]. If you are told there is no call-out charge, ask what you pay if the blockage cannot be cleared on that visit.

If there is a second toilet in the house, waiting for a daytime slot may cost less than an evening or weekend visit. See the plumber call-out fee guide for more questions to ask.

A business must register for VAT when its taxable turnover goes over £90,000 [S3]. Ask whether each total includes VAT.

Stopping it happening again

Most toilet blockages come from things that should not be flushed. Only toilet paper and human waste should go down the toilet. Wet wipes, cotton buds, sanitary products, nappies and kitchen roll can all catch in the pipe. Fat poured down the kitchen sink can also build up in the main drain.

If the same toilet blocks again and again, ask the plumber about a camera survey. It can show a damaged pipe, a poor fall or roots getting in, which would need a different repair.

Blocked toilets in Cheshire

When you post the job, say whether it is the only toilet in the house, whether any other fittings are draining slowly, and whether neighbours have mentioned the same problem. A plumber covering Crewe, Nantwich, Sandbach and the villages nearby can then tell you quickly whether they can help and what the first visit will cost.

If you know where your inspection chamber is, mention it, because it saves time. Anyone in the UK can still post a job or register a business on QuoteZila.

When a blockage keeps coming back

A toilet that blocks every few weeks is a sign of something more than bad luck. Common causes include a waste pipe with too shallow a fall, a damaged or sunken section of drain, roots getting in through a joint, a build-up of scale inside an old pipe, or a low-flush toilet that struggles with the length of pipe it serves.

Clearing the blockage again will not fix any of those. Ask the plumber what they found, whether a camera survey would help, and what a lasting repair would involve. Keep any report or video, because it helps if you later need a drainage firm or have to talk to your water company.

What to tell a plumber

  • what happens when you flush: water rising, slow draining, gurgling
  • whether other sinks, showers or toilets are draining slowly
  • whether anything was flushed that should not have been
  • whether it is the only toilet in the house
  • whether you have tried a plunger
  • where your inspection chamber is, if you know
  • your postcode and whether you need someone today

How to compare blocked toilet quotes

  1. Ask what the call-out or minimum charge covers.
  2. Ask the hourly rate or fixed price after that.
  3. Ask which tools are included, and whether a camera or jetting costs extra.
  4. Ask what you pay if they cannot clear it on the first visit.
  5. Ask whether VAT is included.
  6. Get the answers by message before the visit.

Citizens Advice says some traders charge for quotes, so ask about this first, and get the price in writing rather than relying on a verbal quote [S4].

WaterSafe runs a register of approved plumbers that you can search by postcode [S5].

Jobs you might post

These are examples, not taken from real job posts. "Upstairs toilet blocked, water rises when flushed. Plunger hasn't worked. We have a downstairs toilet so a daytime visit is fine." Or: "Toilet and shower both draining slowly and gurgling. Please quote to find and clear the blockage." Or: "Child flushed a small toy. Toilet now blocked. Please say if the pan may need removing."

Questions about blocked toilet costs

How much does a plumber charge to unblock a toilet?

This guide does not print a price. A blockage in the pan that clears in minutes is a very different visit from one further down the drain that needs rods, a camera or jetting. Time of day and any call-out fee also change the total, so ask what the visit covers before booking.

Should I try a plunger before calling a plumber?

For a simple blockage in the pan, a toilet plunger often clears it, and many people try one first. Stop if the water rises close to the rim. Do not pour strong drain chemicals into a blocked toilet, because the plumber may then have to work with them.

How do I know if the blockage is in the drain, not the toilet?

Signs include more than one fitting draining slowly, gurgling from other plugholes, or water backing up in a downstairs shower or an outside gully. That points further down the system, which may need drain rods or a camera rather than a toilet auger.

Is a blocked toilet my responsibility or the water company's?

It depends where the blockage is. Ofwat says most, but not all, pipes within a property boundary are the owner's responsibility, and that water companies keep maps of the sewers they look after. If neighbours have the same problem, call the water company first.

Will a plumber charge if they can't clear it?

Ask before the visit. The Advertising Standards Authority says a diagnostic fee charged when a customer declines the repair is likely to count as a call-out charge. Agree what you pay if the blockage is beyond what the plumber can clear.

Is an out-of-hours visit more expensive?

It can be. If it is the only toilet in the house, an evening or weekend visit may be worth it. If there is another toilet, waiting for a daytime slot may cost less. Ask for the total including any out-of-hours element and VAT before the plumber sets out.

Does QuoteZila check the plumbers who quote?

No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.
