What is a plumbing snake, and when should you stop?
A plumbing snake is a flexible cable used to break up or pull back a blockage in a waste pipe. In Cheshire this page explains when that tool is the wrong next step, and it does not tell you how to use one.
Last reviewed:What is the tool people mean?
In Cheshire, a plumbing snake, sometimes called a drain auger, is a flexible cable with a head, turned by hand or by a machine, to reach a blockage in a waste pipe. Readers in Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach are the first audience for that description. It is not a chemical, and it is not a camera. A contractor may use one on a basin trap, a shower waste, or a longer run under the floor. The same word covers a short household cable and a powered machine. Those are different visits.
This page does not tell you which length to buy, how to feed a cable into a WC, or how hard to turn it. Forcing a cable is how pans and joints get damaged. If you already own a short cable and the blockage has not moved, stop. Write down what you tried in one sentence, and ask a plumber to take the next step.
Anyone in the UK can post a job or register. QuoteZila is new, so how many plumbers reply depends on who has joined near you [QZ5].
When is a snake the wrong brief?
Say what the water is doing, and let the plumber choose the tool.
- One basin is slow, and the bath is fine. The trap under that basin may be the whole job. A snake might be used, or the trap might be opened. Ask which.
- The shower tray fills when the basin empties. The two wastes may join. A quote for "the shower only" can miss the shared pipe.
- The WC water rises when the basin is emptied. That is not a basin-trap job. Do not keep flushing. Ask for someone who will look at the soil pipe, and say you have not used a chemical.
- Water is coming back at a gully outside. The blockage may be beyond the house. A camera is a different service. Read CCTV drainage surveys if a look inside the pipe is what you want, and keep it off the snake quote unless you have asked for both.
- You can smell drains inside, or sewage is on the floor. Stop using the fittings and say so in the first line of the post.
WaterSafe describes its site as a directory you can search by postcode, and says approved contractors can issue a certificate of compliance [S1]. QuoteZila does not search it for you. If you want a plumber listed there, look them up yourself.
What should the quote say?
Citizens Advice says to get a written quote rather than a verbal one, because a quote is a fixed price and an estimate is a rough guess [S2]. Try to get written quotes from at least 3 traders [S2]. Some traders charge for quotes, so ask before they travel [S2].
If the advert says there is no call-out charge, the Advertising Standards Authority says the claim is only fair when you are not charged for travelling to the premises, the initial diagnosis, or any other charge before the work is agreed [S3]. A fee that appears only if you decline the work is treated as the same kind of charge [S3]. Ask whether you can say no without paying.
Ask the written price to name:
- which fitting, and which pipe
- whether a machine is included or only a hand cable
- whether the trap is opened
- whether chemicals are used (say if you do not want that)
- who cleans up, and whether VAT is included
A business must register for VAT when taxable turnover for the last 12 months goes over £90,000 [S4]. Ask if the total on the page includes VAT.
For a deposit, Citizens Advice says not to agree more than 25% where you cannot avoid one, and to get a receipt [S2]. A short visit is a poor reason to hand over a large sum before anyone arrives.
What should you photograph?
Take a picture of the fitting that is slow, and of any outside gully you can see without lifting a cover. Do not open a manhole. Do not pour a product in "to help the plumber" before they arrive, because they then cannot tell what is in the pipe. If you already did, say the name of the product in the post.
Plumbers are the trade page. Handymen may take a simple trap, but a rising WC is a plumber's brief. The plumber cost guide is about reading a price, not about cables.
Jobs you might post
These are examples, not taken from real job posts.
- The kitchen sink is slow and the dishwasher is fine. You have not used a cable. Ask whether the price includes opening the trap.
- The basin and the bath on the first floor are both slow. Ask the plumber to say if they expect a shared waste, and whether a machine is included.
- The downstairs WC rises when the sink empties. You have stopped using both. Ask for a written price, and say you do not want a chemical poured in before the cause is known.
How do you compare the replies?
Line up the fitting, the tool, and what happens if the cable does not clear it. Citizens Advice says a price far below the others may not be the same work [S2]. Be wary if the trader will not write the quote down [S2]. Ask to see insurance and check it lasts for the job [S2].

What do people ask about plumbing snakes?
Should I buy a snake and clear the drain myself?
This page does not tell you to. A cable can damage a pan, a joint or a trap if it is forced. Describe the blockage and ask a plumber to say whether a snake, a jet, or opening a trap is the job. WaterSafe describes itself as a directory of plumbers and says approved contractors can issue a certificate of compliance.
Is a snake the same as a chemical unblocker?
No. A snake is a mechanical cable. A poured product is a different choice, and this page does not name one. Do not use a cable and a poured product on the same pipe on the same afternoon unless the plumber asks you to. Say in the post if you have already poured anything.
What if several fittings are blocked at once?
A single basin that is slow is a different visit from a house where the bath, the basin and the ground-floor WC all back up together. The second pattern can mean a blockage further down the shared waste. Say which fittings are affected so the quote is for the right length of pipe.
Does QuoteZila check plumbers?
No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.
Can I post a blocked drain on QuoteZila?
Yes. Say which fitting is blocked, whether water is rising, and add a Cheshire postcode. Up to five matched local businesses can quote. QuoteZila is free for customers and local businesses.
