What counts as a toilet repair, and who does it?
A toilet repair is the pan, the seat, the flush or a leak at the base of the pan, and it belongs with a plumber rather than a do-it-yourself strip-down. This guide says what to write in the job, and it does not give a cistern method.
Last reviewed:Which part of the toilet is the job?
People say "toilet repairs" for a pan that rocks, a seat that has failed, a flush that does not clear the bowl, water on the floor at the base, or a cistern that does not refill and then stop. Those are different parts. A quote that says "sort the toilet" cannot be compared with one that names the part. This guide does not tell you how to change a siphon, a valve or a pan connector. It tells you how to describe the fault.
A sound you cannot place is a trickling sound. The tank in the loft is a header tank. A basin that will not empty is a blocked sink. If the toilet itself will not clear, stay here.
Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach are the first towns. Anyone in the UK can post or register.
What should you look at without taking anything apart?
From the bathroom, note whether the bowl clears, whether water runs on after the flush, whether the floor is wet at the base, and whether the pan moves when you sit. Note whether the seat is the only broken part. You can see those things in ordinary use. Do not lift the cistern lid if you are not already sure you know what you are looking at, and do not crack a lid to identify the material.
HSE's residential diagram lists a toilet cistern among indoor places asbestos can occur [S1]. Asbestos can be present in any building built or refurbished before 2000, and disturbing it releases fibres you cannot see [S2]. An old high-level cistern is a reason to say "old cistern, not opened" in the job. A modern close-coupled plastic cistern is a different description. Say which you think you have, or that you do not know.
HSE also says work at height is any place where a person could fall a distance liable to cause injury if precautions were not there, and that such work should be avoided where reasonably practicable [S3]. A cistern in the bathroom, at hand height, is not the loft. Do not turn a toilet repair into a loft visit. HSE: work at height. QuoteZila is not affiliated with this organisation. The definition is on HSE's working at height introduction. The asbestos diagram is where asbestos can occur.
What should the quote name?
WaterSafe Register describes itself as a free online directory of plumbers and water supply pipe installers that can be searched [S4]. Plumbers are the trade. Ask the quote to say:
- Seat only, flush parts, pan, or the connection at the floor.
- Whether the price assumes they can see the fault on one visit.
- What happens to an old cistern if it comes off, given the asbestos diagram [S1].
- Whether the soil pipe or the floor is disturbed. If it is, making good should be a line.
- Whether a new pan you have bought is acceptable to them, or whether they supply it.
GOV.UK lists installing a bathroom that will involve plumbing among projects that might need building regulations approval [S5]. A washer in a flush is not a new bathroom. A new pan and a moved soil pipe might be closer to that list. Ask if the job is more than a part. Building regulations approval is different from planning permission [S5]. GOV.UK: building regulations approval. QuoteZila is not affiliated with this organisation. See building regulations approval.
If the bathroom is listed, a new pan that changes a visible fitting can be a consent question. GOV.UK says works that affect the character of a listed building require listed building consent, and the listing covers the interior [S6]. Say if the house is listed. A seat swap is not the same question as chopping out a pan on a listed floor.
How do you avoid paying for the wrong repair?
Citizens Advice says some traders charge for quotes, so ask first [S7]. A quote is a fixed price and an estimate is a rough guess [S7]. For a repair, ask them to price the likely part and to say what a new pan would be as a second figure, so you are not forced into the larger job on the day. Materials should be separate [S7]. If they want a daily rate, get the hours written down [S7].
A business registers for VAT when taxable turnover for the last 12 months goes over £90,000 [S8]. Ask whether VAT is in a larger replacement price. This guide does not print a price for a pan or a flush. The plumber cost guide talks about plumbing visits more widely.
Jobs you might post
These are examples, not taken from real job posts.
- "Close-coupled toilet, flush does not clear the bowl, floor is dry, pan does not rock. Please quote the flush repair, with a new pan as a separate option. I have not opened the cistern."
- "Water on the floor at the base of the pan after each flush. Please find whether it is the joint. Seat is fine. House is pre-2000 and the cistern looks old: do not break it."
- "Seat and hinges only. Pan and flush are fine. Please supply and fit a seat. No other work."
What a useful reply contains
It names the part. It says whether a second visit is included if the first part does not cure it. It does not tell you to dismantle the cistern before they arrive. You still check the plumber yourself.
Up to five matched local businesses can send a quote [QZ2]. QuoteZila is free for customers and local businesses [QZ1].

Posting a job is not open yet
Is a trickling sound a toilet repair?
Only if you can see that it is the pan or the cistern on the wall. A sound you cannot place, especially overhead, is a different page. Do not open a cistern lid to decide. Describe what you can see from the bathroom you already use.
Is the loft tank part of this job?
No. A header tank is the stored-water cistern, often in the loft. The cistern on the back of the pan is the flush. If the loft is involved, say so and use the header-tank page. Do not climb up as part of preparing this repair.
Could an old cistern contain asbestos?
HSE's diagram of a house lists a toilet cistern among places asbestos can occur, and it says asbestos can be present in any building built or refurbished before 2000. That is not a claim that yours does. It is a reason not to break the cistern to find out. Tell the plumber the age of the house if you know it, and that you have not broken anything.
The flush is weak. Is that a repair or a new pan?
Ask for both prices if you do not know. A repair to the flush parts and a new pan are different amounts of work, including the soil connection and the floor. This guide does not say which fault you have. The quote should say which one they are pricing after they have seen it, or as alternatives.
Does QuoteZila check plumbers?
No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.
