How much does patio grouting cost in Cheshire?

In Cheshire, patio grouting is priced from the joints and the slabs you describe. Filling joints where the slabs stay is a different job from lifting the terrace and laying it again.

Joints, not a new terrace

Patio grouting in Cheshire is a question about the gaps. The slabs are already there, and someone is being asked to fill or refill the joints, whether that terrace is behind a house in Crewe, Nantwich or Sandbach. This page does not print a figure, because we could not find two dated public sources that agree on one. This page is not choosing sand, cement, a resin joint or a brush-in product for you. Name the filler you want, or ask the contractor to name the one they will use.

Say how much of the terrace is involved. "By the back door" is not "the whole patio and the steps". Say whether the slabs feel loose underfoot or only the filler has gone. A loose slab can mean the bed has failed. That is no longer a joint. It is a reason to ask for a second, separate description of work. This guide will not tell you how to rake a joint, what to mix, or how deep to go. Those would be a method. You are writing a brief.

Weeds, ants and a joint that washes out in heavy rain are fair things to mention. They explain why you are asking. They do not diagnose the terrace, and they do not tell a contractor which filler to use. Ask them to name the filler. If two quotes name different fillers, you are not looking at one specification with two totals.

When the slabs have to come up

Keep a bright line. Joints refilled, slabs staying: this page. Slabs lifted, a base rebuilt, the terrace made larger, or the fall toward the house altered: a different quote. Landscapers and driveways and paving are the trade pages for building and relaying. The driveway cost guide is where a new hard surface is discussed. Do not drop a relaying price into a grouting comparison.

Steps, a threshold, and a manhole inside the terrace should be named if the joints run up to them. A quote that stops at the open flags and ignores the step nosing can look tidy and still leave the bit you trip on. Say if a door must keep opening while the filler cures, if the contractor tells you there is a wait. This page does not invent that wait. It tells you to ask whether the door can be used again once they have finished, or whether they need the terrace left clear afterwards.

The paving rules are about a surface being laid

Planning Portal guidance on paving a front garden is about new work and replacement work, not about filler in an old joint [S4]. A driveway of any size can go in without planning permission where the surface is permeable, or where rainwater is directed to a lawn or border and drains naturally [S4]. Once you are past five square metres, permission is needed for a traditional impermeable driveway that does not drain to a permeable area [S4]. Houses can use those allowances. Flats and maisonettes are outside them [S4].

Use that page if the job has become a new or replacement drive. Do not use it as a rule that forbids, or permits, grout. A back-garden terrace is not automatically the front-garden driveway example either. If you are unsure because the terrace is being enlarged, ask the council. This guide will not stretch a driveway sentence over a joint.

Adverts, VAT, and a total you can compare

A no call-out claim has a narrow meaning. The Advertising Standards Authority says it is fair only where the business does not charge for the journey, does not charge for the initial diagnosis on that visit, and does not add any other charge before the work is agreed [S3]. A contractor who prices the terrace only after a paid survey has a different offer. Ask which offer you are getting.

Citizens Advice treats the quote as the fixed price and the estimate as a rough guess [S1]. Ask for writing [S1]. Be wary if it is refused [S1]. Some firms charge to produce the quote. Ask before they visit [S1]. Three written quotes are what that page suggests you try to collect [S1]. Check the total is fixed, that joints and filler are listed, that the price has an expiry, that VAT is declared, and that any rise is explained [S1]. Time-on-site pricing needs hours written down. Otherwise a day rate can drag on [S1].

The VAT threshold is turnover over £90,000 across the last 12 months, or an expectation of crossing £90,000 within 30 days [S2]. It is not a grouting price. Ask whether your total includes VAT.

Deposits to the firm, if you truly cannot avoid one, should stay at or below 25%, with a receipt [S1]. Card payments, in stages on a larger terrace, beat cash up front [S1]. Insurance is yours to check [S1]. A much lower total can be a smaller area of joints, or a firm that intends to lift slabs and has not said so [S1].

Furniture, drains and the edge against the lawn

Moveable pots are your problem to mention, not a price. A table that cannot leave the terrace, a parasol base, and a barbecue should be in the note so the area is honest. Ponding against the house is also worth a photo. You are not asking this page to redesign the fall. You are asking the contractor whether filler alone is what they are pricing, or whether they think water is a different fault. If they think the slabs must come up, that is the other quote.

The edge where the terrace meets grass or gravel collects the old filler. Say if you want that edge tidied. It can be a small line or a large one. Plants in the cracks of a wall next to the patio are not the joints between slabs. Leave them out unless you mean them to be in.

Shared side passages, a neighbour's fence that the hose would hit, and a washing line over the terrace are access notes. They are not a legal finding about the boundary.

Anyone in the UK can post or register. QuoteZila is new, so who replies depends on businesses that have joined near the house [QZ5].

Colour, the door step, and a terrace that is not a drive

Ask if the fresh filler should match the joints that remain, or if the whole terrace should be redone so the colour is one tone. A bright patch beside weathered joints can look unfinished. Say which version you want priced, and do not assume the two versions cost the same.

Name the threshold, any step down to the grass, and a gully set among the flags when the joints run into them. A quote that stops two slabs short of the back door has missed the part you cross every morning. This work is still not a driveway wash, and it is not a chemical clean of a front drive. If a contractor wants to jet the flags as well as fill the gaps, ask for the jetting on a separate line so you can refuse it without losing the joint price.

Pots, a rotary dryer and a heavy table are worth a sentence so the area is honest. A narrow side gate changes how bags come through. Write the gate down. None of this is an instruction to rake, mix or point the joints yourself. If the slabs rock, that stays on the separate relay quote described above, not folded into the filler.

Jobs you might post

These are examples, not taken from real job posts.

  • Refill joints on a rear patio. Slabs stay down. Filler to be named. Steps included. No enlargement.
  • Look at joints by the back door only. The rest of the terrace is out of scope. Photo of the open gaps.
  • Quote grouting and, separately, a price to relay any slab that rocks. The two prices must not be merged.

How to read the two totals

Same joints, same "slabs stay", same filler. Then compare. If one total is actually a new patio, take it to the driveway cost guide and off this page.

Questions about patio joints

How much does patio grouting cost in Cheshire?

A few loose joints by the back door and a whole terrace of open joints are different areas. Compare quotes that say whether the slabs stay put and which filler they will use. Lifting the terrace is a different brief from filling the joints.

Is grouting the same as laying a patio?

No. Grouting, on this page, means filling joints between slabs that are staying. Lifting the slabs, building a new base, or changing the size of the terrace is a different brief. Put that brief on its own quote.

Do the front-garden paving rules cover new joint filler?

Those rules are about a new or replacement surface. Any size of driveway avoids planning permission if it is permeable, or if rain is sent to a lawn or border to soak in. Past five square metres, permission is required for a traditional impermeable driveway that fails to drain toward a permeable area. The page applies to houses, not flats and maisonettes. Filling a joint is not that project unless the slabs are being relaid.

What does a no call-out advert actually allow?

Only a visit with no fee for travel, no fee for the first inspection, and no other fee before you agree, if the Advertising Standards Authority test is being met. Ask what you would owe if you decline.

What should the written price show?

A fixed total, which joints, whether slabs are coming up, how long the price lasts, and whether VAT is included. VAT registration starts when turnover for 12 months passes £90,000, or is expected to within 30 days. Keep any unavoidable deposit to the cleaner or fitter at or under 25%.

Does QuoteZila check patio fitters?

No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.

Can I post patio grouting on QuoteZila?

Yes. Say the slabs stay down, name the town, and add a photo of the joints. Up to five matched local businesses can quote. QuoteZila is free for customers and local businesses.
