What changes a carpet washing visit?

In Cheshire, a carpet wash is priced from the rooms, the stairs and how dirty the pile is, plus whether furniture is moved. No price is printed for a room, a stair flight or a call-out.

What you are booking

In Cheshire, carpet washing means a cleaner comes to the house and cleans the carpet you already have. It is not a new carpet, and it is not a full house clean of kitchens and bathrooms unless you add that in writing. People book it before a move, after building dust, or when stairs and landings have gone dark in the traffic line.

No price is printed. A public room rate was not used. Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach are towns you can name so a local cleaner can see the job. The figure they give should follow the list below, not the town name.

Describe the carpet, not a hope

Walk the rooms and write what a cleaner cannot see from the street.

  • Which rooms, and whether the stairs and landing are included. A flight is slower than a rectangle of the same length.
  • Whether the pile is wool, synthetic, a twist, a berber or a carpet you cannot name. If you do not know, say unknown. Do not guess a fibre and then blame the result.
  • The soiling: everyday grey, mud, pet marks, building dust, or a single spill. A maintenance wash and a salvage attempt are different visits.
  • Loose rugs you want left alone, and fitted carpet you want done.
  • Underlay smells, damp patches or a carpet that is already detached. Washing will not fix rot in the floorboards underneath. If the floor is soft, deal with that first.
  • People or pets who must stay in the house, and rooms that must be dry by evening.

Ask the cleaner what method they will use, in plain words: a hot-water extraction machine, a dry compound, or something else they name. Those methods are not ranked here. Get the method in the quote so two firms are not describing different work under one heading.

Ask what they will not do. Bleach spots, torn tufts and old burns often stay visible. A cleaner who says every mark will vanish has not looked at the carpet. Citizens Advice says to be clear about the work you want, because that is what makes the price accurate [S1].

Furniture, access and drying

The visit fails on logistics more often than on soap.

Say who moves beds, sofas and bookcases. A price that assumes you have emptied the room is not a price that includes shifting a double bed. If the cleaner moves furniture, ask where they put it and whether they put it back before they leave. Heavy pieces left on wet carpet mark the pile.

Stairs need a note about a landing window, a narrow turn and a runner with stair rods. Rods and gripper at the edges take time. Say if you want the rods removed and refitted.

Access: a flat with no lift, a permit street, or a machine that has to come through a living room. Say it. Anyone in the UK can post a job. The cleaner still has to reach the door.

Drying is part of the result. Ask how long they expect before you walk on the carpet in socks, and what they want you to do with windows. Do not take a drying time from a general note. Take it from the firm, and ask what a second visit costs if a room is still soiled. If they use a day rate rather than a fixed price for the rooms, Citizens Advice says there is a risk the time is stretched, so write down the days and the hours that make a day [S1].

Pets mean hair, accidents and a need to know what product is going on the floor. Say you have pets. Ask the cleaner to name the product if someone in the house is sensitive to residues. No product is named.

Sun-faded colour, a seam that has opened, and a carpet crushed under a sofa will still look uneven after a wash. Ask the cleaner to point those out on the day, before the machine starts, so you are not debating them afterwards. If a previous cleaner left a sticky residue, say so. A second process on top of an unknown chemical can make a pale patch worse. You do not need the brand name if you do not have it. You do need to say that something was already applied.

In a rented house, check the agreement before you book a wash that uses a lot of water on a floor you do not own. Some landlords want to choose the firm, especially if the carpet was new at the start of the tenancy. A quote from a cleaner is not the landlord's consent. If you are moving out, photograph the rooms before and after, and keep the written price with those photos. GOV.UK lists poor service among the problems you can take to Citizens Advice in England and Wales [S4]. The photos are what make that conversation specific.

Money, adverts and a poor result

Get the price in writing. Citizens Advice says a quote is a fixed price for agreed work, and an estimate is only a rough guess [S1]. Do not rely on a verbal quote [S1]. Try to get written quotes from at least three cleaners if the job is a whole house rather than one rug [S1]. A price a lot lower than the others may mean the work is not the same, or that the trader lacks the skills or is not being honest [S1]. Ask whether rooms, stairs and furniture moving are on each paper before you treat the figures as equal.

Some traders charge for a quote. Ask first [S1]. The Advertising Standards Authority says a marketer should claim "no call-out charge" only if they do not charge for travelling, for the initial look, or for any other fee before the work is agreed. If a fee cannot be avoided, it must be stated clearly [S2]. An "assessment" fee that appears only if you decline the wash is treated, on that advice, as the same kind of charge [S2].

VAT belongs on the paper. A business must register when taxable turnover for the last 12 months goes over £90,000 [S3]. Ask whether the total includes VAT.

If you pay a deposit, Citizens Advice says not to agree to pay everything up front [S1]. If the deposit is to pay for materials, offer to buy the materials yourself instead [S1]. If the work will take a long time and a deposit cannot be avoided, do not agree more than 25 per cent, and get a receipt [S1]. Ask why a deposit is needed at all.

If the result is poor, GOV.UK says the law protects consumer rights when you buy services, and that problems you can get help with include poor service. In England and Wales it tells you to contact Citizens Advice [S4]. Keep the written quote, the photos from before, and the photos from after. That is the record. No result is promised for a stain.

Ask what insurance the cleaner holds if a machine marks a skirt or a piece of furniture, and look at the policy if the job is large [S1].

Jobs you might post

These are examples, not taken from real job posts.

  • Wash the stairs, landing and hall of an occupied house, customer moves the hall table, pets in the kitchen during the visit.
  • Wash two empty bedrooms after decorating dust, no stain treatment, waste water taken away by the firm.
  • Look at a lounge carpet with old bleach spots and say, before any wash, which marks will remain.

Put the town and the floor level on the job. A first-floor flat and a house with a long stair are different carrying jobs for the machine. Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach only tell the cleaner where the door is.

Questions about carpet washing

Why is a single carpet washing price not printed?

A single bedroom and a heavily soiled lounge with a flight of stairs are different visits. Firms also describe their method in different words. No room rate is invented. Ask two or three cleaners to price the same list of rooms and to say what is not included.

Do cleaners charge to come and look?

Some traders charge for a quote, so Citizens Advice says to ask before anyone comes. If an advert claims there is no call-out charge, the Advertising Standards Authority says that is fair only when there is no fee for travel, for the first look, or for any other charge before you agree the work.

Should the price be fixed?

Citizens Advice says a quote is a fixed price and an estimate is a rough guess, so an estimate can rise. Ask for a fixed total for named rooms. If you are offered a day rate, ask how many hours count as a day and what happens if a stain needs a second visit.

What if a stain is still there afterwards?

Say that risk before you book. Some marks are dye, bleach or damage to the pile, and washing will not rebuild missing fibres. Ask the cleaner which marks they expect to improve and which they do not. GOV.UK points people in England and Wales to Citizens Advice for help with poor service.

Is VAT on a carpet wash?

Only if the business is VAT-registered. A business must register when taxable turnover for the last 12 months goes over £90,000. Ask whether the figure you were given includes VAT, and get the answer in writing with the rooms.

Does QuoteZila check carpet cleaners?

No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.

This page is a wash of the carpet you already have and it prints no room, stair or call-out price, while what changes a carpet cleaning quote is the list of lines two cleaners should write, including the fibre and who moves the furniture.
