How to clean a mattress without guessing
Start with the care label on the mattress, because a method that suits one filling can damage another. A Cambridge hospital leaflet on dust mites is for people with that allergy, and it is not a set of steps for every bed in Cheshire.
Last reviewed:Read the label before any method
A mattress label is the maker's instruction for that filling. The label overrides a general article. If the label says the ticking must not be wetted, do not soak it because a general article told you to. If the label names a professional clean, that is the line to follow, and the job you post should quote the label rather than a method you made up.
Spills are ordinary housekeeping. Blot what you can with a dry cloth and keep water out of the filling unless the label allows it. That sentence is not a clinical claim and it is not taken from the hospital leaflet below. Air the room. If the smell or the stain remains, ask a cleaner to look, and show them the label.
The hospital leaflet is for a diagnosed allergy
Cambridge University Hospitals' patient information on dust mites says it is for people diagnosed as allergic to house dust mite, to be used with advice from the allergy clinic, usually alongside medical treatment [S1]. It says the measures will lower allergens but not remove them, and that doing one or two measures inconsistently is unlikely to make a difference [S1]. Concentrate on the bedroom, where it says levels are highest [S1].
House dust mites, on that leaflet, live in homes despite normal cleaning, feed on shed skin, and are found in mattresses and bedding and also in carpets, upholstery, chairs, curtains and clothing [S1]. They prefer warm, humid conditions [S1]. The leaflet suggests keeping indoor humidity under 50% but over 30% if you use a dehumidifier, and reducing humidity by ventilation [S1]. It says the person with the allergy should ideally not do the vacuuming, and should stay out of the bedroom while the bed is stripped and for at least half an hour after it is remade [S1].
Barrier covers that fully enclose the mattress, duvet and pillows are described as the single most effective measure, and not enough on their own [S1]. Covers should be breathable and tested to show they stop the allergen escaping [S1]. If a mattress cover is used, the leaflet says there is no need to vacuum the mattress [S1]. Sprays aimed at mites are not recommended: limited help, and a possible irritant that children and pets should avoid [S1].
An alternative it gives for pillows, not for the mattress itself, is a deep freeze for 12 hours every month [S1]. Do not put a double mattress in a domestic freezer. That is not what the leaflet says.
Hiring a cleaner for the bed
If you want another person to do the work, describe the mattress size, the stain or the allergy diagnosis, the floor the bedroom is on, and whether the bed must be moved. Citizens Advice wants written quotes from at least three traders, and it wants you to know whether you have been given a fixed price or a rough guess [S2]. Ask if VAT is included [S2]. The registration threshold is £90,000 of taxable turnover in the last 12 months [S3].
Some traders charge for coming to quote, so ask before they travel [S2]. If a deposit cannot be avoided, Citizens Advice says not to agree to more than 25%, and to get a receipt [S2].
Honest status: QuoteZila is new. We're starting in Cheshire, beginning with Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach, and growing area by area. Anyone in the UK can still post a job or register a business. QuoteZila is beginning in Cheshire, Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach first. Anyone in the UK can still post a job or register a business [QZ5]. A bed in a house by Sandbach market place is cleaned according to its label, not according to the crosses outside. Up to five matched local businesses can send quotes [QZ2]. QuoteZila is free for customers and local businesses [QZ1].
Posting a job is not open yet
The trade pages are cleaners and carpet cleaners. House cleaner cost is about reading a cleaning quote. Locksmith cost is unrelated work, linked only as another guide to written prices.
This page is general information, not professional or legal advice. QuoteZila does not check Gas Safe, WaterSafe, NFRC, NICEIC or other registrations against the register on your behalf: look them up yourself.
Jobs you might post
These are examples, not taken from real job posts.
- "Double mattress in Crewe. Tea stain on the top. I will photograph the care label. Please say if you can work to that label."
- "Child's bed in Nantwich. Allergy clinic has diagnosed house dust mite. I want the clean described in writing, not a spray you will not name."
- "Spare room in Sandbach. Mattress smells damp. I need someone to look and to say if it should be thrown out instead."
This page starts from the care label and, for a diagnosed dust-mite allergy, the hospital leaflet, while how to remove stains from a mattress is one stain: blot it, use a little cool water and a mild cleaner, and dry the bed.
Questions about mattresses
Should everyone vacuum a mattress every week?
Not for every mattress. Cambridge University Hospitals' dust-mite leaflet, approved on 12 March 2024, is written for people who have been diagnosed as allergic to house dust mite, and it says the measures should be used only with that diagnosis and with advice from the allergy clinic. For those readers, if there is no barrier cover, it says to vacuum the mattress once a week. If a cover is used, it says there is no need to vacuum the mattress. Without that diagnosis, follow the label on your own mattress.
What wash temperature does that leaflet give for bedding?
For bedding that is not inside allergy covers, the leaflet says to wash on a 60 degree cycle, including pillows, quilts, blankets and duvets, choosing materials that allow it. It says a cooler wash will only partly deal with the mites, and that a hot wash is better. If a hot wash is not possible, it mentions dry-cleaning. Those lines are allergy advice from a hospital trust, not a rule for a guest mattress with a wine spill.
Can I hire someone to clean a mattress?
Yes, if that is the job you want done. Citizens Advice says to get written quotes from at least three traders before you decide, and to treat a quote as a fixed price rather than an estimate, which is only a rough guess. Ask what they will do to the mattress, whether they move the bed, and whether the price includes VAT. A business must register for VAT when taxable turnover for the last 12 months goes over £90,000.
Does QuoteZila check the businesses?
No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.
