How do you remove stains from a mattress?

Blot the stain as early as you can, then treat it with a small amount of cool water and a mild cleaner, working from the outside in and never soaking the mattress. Let it dry completely before you put the bedding back, because a damp mattress can smell and mark again.

What is the first thing to do with a mattress stain?

Act early and use as little liquid as you can. A mattress is thick and slow to dry, so the usual mistake is to pour cleaner on and scrub. That pushes the stain deeper into the filling and leaves a damp patch that can smell or leave a tide mark.

Strip the bedding, then blot the stain with a clean, dry, pale cloth. Press, lift and move to a clean part of the cloth. Keep going until the cloth stops picking anything up. Only then move on to a damp clean.

Before you use any product, check the care label on the mattress or the maker's instructions. Some covers are meant to come off and be washed. Others are fixed and need spot cleaning only.

How do you treat common types of mattress stain?

Work from the outside of the mark towards the middle, with a cloth that is damp rather than wet. Blot more than you rub.

  • Fresh spills. Blot, then dab with cool water and a small amount of mild detergent. Blot dry.
  • Blood. Use cold water, not hot, because heat can set it. Dab and blot repeatedly. Be patient rather than aggressive.
  • Sweat and yellowing. These build up slowly and rarely vanish in one go. A mild detergent solution and repeated light passes, with full drying in between, is more realistic than one heavy clean.
  • Urine. Blot as much as you can first. An enzyme cleaner that the label says is suitable for fabrics can help with odour. Dry thoroughly.
  • Odours with no visible stain. Many people sprinkle bicarbonate of soda over the dry surface, leave it for some hours and vacuum it off with an upholstery attachment.

Never mix cleaning products. Rinse the area lightly with a cloth dampened in plain water if you used a detergent, so no residue is left to attract dirt.

How should you dry a mattress after cleaning?

Drying matters as much as cleaning. Open a window, let air reach both sides if you can lift the mattress onto its edge, and keep the bedding off until the patch is completely dry. A fan helps. Direct heat close to the mattress is a bad idea, because some fabrics and foams do not like it.

Once it is dry, a washable mattress protector is the simplest way to stop the next spill reaching the mattress at all. Wash the protector along with the sheets.

When do spots on a mattress mean something else?

Not every mark is a spill. The NHS lists spots of blood on bedding and small brown spots on bedding or furniture among the signs of bedbugs, and says bedbugs can hide in places including mattresses and bed frames [S1]. The same NHS page says it is very difficult to get rid of bedbugs yourself, that things you try yourself are unlikely to get rid of them completely, and that you should contact your local council or a pest control service [S1]. It also advises washing affected bedding and clothing on a hot wash of 60C and tumble drying on a hot setting for at least 30 minutes [S1].

If you think that is what you are seeing, a cleaner is not the right first call. Speak to the council or a pest control business, and see the pest control page.

When should you call a professional cleaner?

A carpet and upholstery cleaner can be worth it when a stain is large, old or has gone deep, when a smell keeps coming back, or when you would rather not risk over-wetting the mattress yourself. When you ask for quotes, say:

  • the size of the mattress and what it is made of, if you know
  • what the stain is, roughly how old, and how big
  • whether you have already tried anything on it
  • whether there are other items to do on the same visit, such as a sofa or a carpet

Citizens Advice suggests getting written quotes from at least three traders [S2]. Ask each cleaner how they dry the mattress and how long to leave it before using it again.

Jobs you might post

These are examples, not taken from real job posts. "A double mattress has an old drink stain and a smell we cannot shift. Please clean and deodorise it." Or: "Deep clean a child's mattress and a sofa in Sandbach on the same visit." Or: "We are moving out and want two mattresses and the bedroom carpets cleaned."

Questions about mattress stains

How do you get a fresh stain out of a mattress?

Blot it straight away with a clean, dry cloth to lift as much as you can. Then dab with a cloth dampened in cool water and a little mild detergent, working from the edge inwards so the mark does not spread. Blot again with a dry cloth and leave the mattress uncovered until it is fully dry.

Can I use bleach on a mattress?

It is not a good idea. Bleach can damage the fabric and the filling, and it is easy to use far more liquid than a mattress can dry out. Check the care label or the maker's instructions first, and never mix different cleaning products together.

What do small dark spots on the mattress mean?

They can be ordinary marks, but the NHS lists spots of blood on bedding and small brown spots on bedding or furniture among the signs of bedbugs. If you see those along with bites, the NHS says it is very difficult to get rid of bedbugs yourself and that you should contact your local council or a pest control service.

When is it worth paying a cleaner for a mattress?

If a stain is large, old, has soaked deep into the filling or still smells after you have cleaned it, a carpet and upholstery cleaner with proper extraction kit may do a better job. Ask how they dry the mattress and how long you should leave it before sleeping on it again.

Does QuoteZila check the cleaners who quote?

No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.
