How do you choose a handheld steam cleaner?
Choose a handheld steam cleaner by the UK plug, the written instructions and the job, not by a brand league. This page follows Electrical Safety First's three machine types as a sorting guide, and it does not name or rank a model.
Last reviewed:How do the three shapes differ?
Electrical Safety First's steam cleaner page says these machines use a system that boils water to create steam, and that they can be used on the floor, carpets, clothing, soft furnishings and other typical household products [S1]. It names three main types. A handheld is for quick spot cleaning. A mop is for deep floor cleaning. A cylinder with attachments covers several different tasks, and some models convert between handheld and floor use [S1].
That description is how this page sorts the shape of machine. It is not a ranking. This page does not name a model, a shop or a brand. Match the shape to the job you will actually do. A mop for floors and a handheld for a small spot are different tools.
What should you check before you buy?
Electrical Safety First says to buy from a reputable retailer rather than a third-party seller online, because the appliance may not have passed all the necessary safety checks, and to make sure it is fitted with a standard UK 3-pin plug [S1]. It also says not to rely only on comments shoppers leave online, because sellers can fake them [S1]. Those are checks on how you buy. They are not a list of models, and this page does not add one.
Electrical Safety First says safety features to look for include automatic shutoff, pressure release valves, child locks and safety caps to prevent burns, plus insulated parts, steam locks and indicator lights [S1]. Register the machine with the manufacturer so you can be contacted if there is a safety recall of your product [S1].
What does the manual tell you to do?
Read the entire owner's manual [S1]. Electrical Safety First says to keep the machine unplugged when it is not in use, and unplugged when you fill it with water or detergent [S1]. Empty the water chamber after each use, and store it in a dry area away from sources of extreme temperature [S1].
Check the plug and cord before use, and do not use the machine if there is any sign of damage [S1]. Do not pull it by the cord, do not overstretch the cord, and keep it away from open electrical points or wiring [S1]. Gloves and eye protection are recommended, especially for close-up work [S1].
Do not steam-clean windows on a cold day, because the difference in temperature could cause the glass to crack [S1]. Check the plug and the socket-outlet for burn marks, for buzzing or crackling, or for a plug that feels too hot to touch [S1]. If there is a burning smell, sparking, cracks or damage, or any unusual noise, switch the machine off immediately and contact the retailer or the manufacturer [S1].
What if a fuse blows or the circuit trips?
Stop using the machine. Electrical Safety First says that if fuses blow or circuit-breakers trip when you use the steam cleaner, stop using it and replace it [S1]. That line is about the appliance. It is not an instruction to open the consumer unit or to change a fuse yourself.
An RCD in the consumer unit protects you from an electric shock if the appliance faults [S1]. Do not open the consumer unit, and do not take the machine apart.
Periodic inspection is a separate question from a machine that trips. Electrical Safety First recommends periodic inspection every 5 years, or at each change of occupancy if that is sooner, for tenanted properties, and at least every 10 years for an owner-occupied home [S1]. It says that inspection should be carried out only by electrically competent persons, such as registered electricians [S1].

What if you hire a person in Cheshire instead?
QuoteZila is new. It is starting in Cheshire, beginning with Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach, and growing area by area. Anyone in the UK can still post a job or register a business [QZ5]. Say which surfaces you want cleaned, whether the room has a working socket, and whether anyone in the house should stay away from hot steam. A tiled kitchen and a car interior are different requests. Say which one you mean.
GOV.UK says the law protects your consumer rights when you buy goods, services or digital content, and lists faulty goods among the problems you can get help with [S2]. For England and Wales it tells you to contact Citizens Advice [S2]. That route is for a machine you bought that goes wrong. It is not a way to choose between two working models. This page does not state a return deadline.
If you would rather hire a person than buy a machine, post the cleaning job. Up to five matched local businesses can send quotes [QZ2]. QuoteZila is free for customers and local businesses [QZ1]. How fast you get quotes depends on how many local businesses have joined near you [QZ5].
Honest status: QuoteZila is new. We're starting in Cheshire, beginning with Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach, and growing area by area. Anyone in the UK can still post a job or register a business. How fast you get quotes depends on how many local businesses have joined near you. Businesses can register and receive jobs straight away. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire.
Posting a job is not open yet
See cleaners, carpet cleaners and electricians. A written cleaning price is discussed on house cleaner cost, and fixed wiring on electrician cost in Cheshire.
This page is general information, not professional or legal advice. QuoteZila does not check Gas Safe, WaterSafe, NFRC, NICEIC or other registrations against the register on your behalf: look them up yourself.
Jobs you might post
These are examples, not taken from real job posts.
- End of tenancy clean in Crewe. Ask the cleaner to say whether they bring a steam cleaner for the kitchen tiles, and which surfaces they will not steam.
- Mattress and sofa in Nantwich. You want a person to do the work. Ask what equipment they use.
- Burn marks on a socket in Sandbach after a steamer was used. You need an electrician to look at the fixed wiring, not another cleaner.
What do people ask about steam cleaners?
Which shape of steam cleaner suits a small job?
Electrical Safety First describes three sorts: a handheld for quick spot cleaning, a mop for deep floor cleaning, and a cylinder with attachments for several different tasks, with some models converting between handheld and floor use. Match the shape to the job you will actually do. Read the entire owner's manual and follow it. This page does not name a model.
What should I look at before I plug it in?
Electrical Safety First says a steam cleaner must have a UK 3-pin plug, should stay unplugged when you are not using it, and should be unplugged while you fill it with water or detergent. Check the plug and cord before use and do not use the machine if they are damaged. Look at the plug and the socket-outlet for burn marks. If there is a burning smell, sparking, cracks or damage, or any unusual noise, switch it off immediately and contact the retailer or the manufacturer.
The socket keeps tripping. Is that a cleaner problem?
Stop using the machine. Electrical Safety First says that if fuses blow or circuit-breakers trip when you use the steam cleaner, stop using it and replace it. That line is about the appliance. Periodic inspection of the wiring is separate, and it should be carried out only by electrically competent persons, such as registered electricians. Do not open a consumer unit, and do not take the machine apart.
What if the cleaner is faulty?
GOV.UK says the law protects your consumer rights when you buy goods, services or digital content, and it lists faulty goods among the problems you can get help with. For England and Wales it tells you to contact Citizens Advice. Keep the receipt and the manual. This page does not state a deadline for returning the machine.
Does QuoteZila check the businesses?
No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.
