How do you clean an oven glass door?
Let the oven cool, switch it off, then clean both sides of the glass with a gentle paste or an oven glass cleaner and a soft, non-scratch pad. Only take the door apart if your manual shows how, and read any oven cleaner label, as the NHS says oven cleaners can cause chemical burns [S2].
Last reviewed:Why does oven glass get so dirty?
Every time you cook, fat and food splash onto the inside of the door. The heat bakes those splashes on, layer after layer, until the glass turns brown and cloudy. Steam can also carry grease into the gap between the panes, which is why some marks will not wipe off from either side.
A little cleaning often is easier than a big clean once a year. Electrical Safety First says to keep your oven and grill clean, as built-up fat and grease is a major cause of fire [S1].
QuoteZila is starting in Cheshire, with Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach among the first towns, and anyone in the UK can post a cleaning job. These steps apply to most domestic ovens.
What do you need?
You do not need much:
- rubber gloves
- bicarbonate of soda and water, or an oven cleaner made for glass
- a soft cloth and a non-scratch scouring pad
- a plastic scraper if your manual allows one
- a bowl of warm water and an old towel for drips
Avoid metal scourers, wire wool and sharp blades unless the manual says they are safe for your glass. They can scratch the surface, and scratches hold dirt and are hard to see through.
How do you clean the oven door glass?
- Make sure the oven is off and cold. On an electric oven, switch it off at the wall switch or socket too. Electrical Safety First lists cleaning an electrical appliance while it is plugged in among things to avoid [S1].
- Open the door fully and lay an old towel on the floor under it.
- Spread a paste of bicarbonate of soda and a little water over the inside of the glass, or apply an oven glass cleaner as its label says.
- Leave it to work. Heavy marks need longer to soften than light ones.
- Wipe it off with a damp cloth, and work at stubborn spots with a non-scratch pad in small circles.
- Rinse with clean water so no residue is left, then dry with a soft cloth.
- Clean the outside glass with a little warm soapy water or glass cleaner.
If you use a chemical oven cleaner, read the label first. The NHS lists oven cleaners among household cleaning products that can cause acid or chemical burns, and says to call 999 if a harmful chemical gets on someone's skin or in their eyes [S2]. Keep windows open and children and pets out of the kitchen.
What about grease between the panes?
Many oven doors have two or three layers of glass. Grease that gets between them cannot be reached from outside. Some manufacturers design the door or the inner glass to be removed for cleaning, and the user manual shows how.
Only take the door apart if the manual for your model shows the method. Doors can be heavy, hinges are under spring tension, and glass put back the wrong way round can affect how the door seals and how hot the outside gets. If you have no manual, or the door does not come apart easily, leave it to a professional oven cleaner or an appliance repairer.
Cracked or chipped glass is a different problem. Stop using the oven and ask a repairer about a replacement panel.
Should you pay for an oven clean?
A professional oven clean usually covers the glass, the racks, the inside walls and the trays, and often the hob and extractor too. It can make sense before you move house, at the end of a tenancy or when the oven has not been cleaned for a long time. Our oven cleaning cost guide explains what changes the price.
You can also post the job to cleaners, or include it in a wider kitchen clean. Our house cleaner cost guide covers regular cleaning. If the fridge is also in need of attention, see how to use a fridge drain hole cleaner.

Questions about cleaning oven glass
How do I clean between the glass panes of an oven door?
Only if your oven's manual shows how to take the door or the inner glass apart. Many doors are designed to come apart for cleaning, but the method differs between models, and putting the panes back the wrong way round can stop the door working properly. If there is no guidance, ask a professional oven cleaner.
What is a gentle way to shift baked-on grease?
A paste of bicarbonate of soda and a little water, spread on the cool glass and left for a while, softens many baked-on marks. Wipe it off with a damp cloth and work at stubborn spots with a non-scratch pad. Rinse well so no white film is left behind.
Are oven cleaners safe to use?
Follow the label. The NHS lists oven cleaners among household cleaning products that can cause chemical burns, and says many products have a label saying if they are harmful and if there is a risk of burns. Wear gloves, keep the room aired, and keep children and pets away while you work.
Why does a clean oven matter?
It is about more than looks. Electrical Safety First says to keep your oven and grill clean, as built-up fat and grease is a major cause of fire. A clean glass door also lets you check food without opening the door and losing heat.
