What should you use to clean a TV screen?
Start with the TV maker's cleaning instructions, which usually suggest switching off and unplugging, then wiping gently with a soft, dry cloth. Never spray liquid straight onto the screen or into the TV, because water and electrics do not mix.
Last reviewed:What does the maker say?
Every TV comes with care instructions, in the printed manual, the on-screen help or the maker's website. They are the place to start, because screens differ. Some have delicate anti-glare coatings, and some cleaning products can damage them.
Electrical Safety First says to read the manufacturer's instructions carefully and always follow them [S1]. If you have lost the manual, search the maker's website for your model number, which is usually on a label on the back.

How do you clean a TV screen gently?
Most makers suggest a version of this:
- Switch off and unplug. A dark screen shows smears clearly, and there is no power to the set.
- Let it cool. A warm screen dries any moisture too fast and can streak.
- Dust first. Wipe gently with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth, such as microfibre.
- Use light pressure. Pressing hard can damage some screens.
- Deal with marks carefully. If the manual allows it, lightly dampen the cloth with water or an approved screen cleaner, never the screen itself, then wipe and dry.
- Clean the frame and stand with a separate dry or barely damp cloth.
Avoid paper towels, rough cloths, scouring pads and anything with grit.
What is a TV cleaner, and do you need one?
Shops sell sprays and wipes labelled as TV or screen cleaners. Some are mild and alcohol-free, others are stronger. Before using one, check your TV manual says it is suitable, and read the product label.
HSE explains that hazard pictograms, shown as a diamond with a red border, alert us to a hazardous chemical that might cause harm [S3]. A cleaner carrying one needs more care, and may not be suitable for a delicate screen.
For most dust and light smears, a dry microfibre cloth is enough. Keep one just for the screen so it does not pick up grit from other cleaning.
Why keep water away from the TV?
Electrical Safety First says not to mix electricity and water, and gives not leaving drinks on top of the TV as one everyday example [S2]. It also says to keep a TV on a flat, stable surface away from moisture and heat [S1].
Spraying liquid at a screen can let it run down into the frame and the vents. If a TV does get wet, Electrical Safety First says to unplug it immediately and stop using it [S1]. It also warns not to repair or adapt the TV yourself, because there may be a risk of electric shock if you remove the cover or back [S1]. You can read its TV safety advice. What else is worth checking while you clean?
Cleaning is a good time for a quick look at the plug and socket. Electrical Safety First says to check plugs and socket-outlets regularly for burn marks, sounds of arcing such as buzzing or crackling, or anything that feels too hot to touch [S1]. If you find any, stop using it and get advice from the retailer, the maker or a qualified repair technician.
Also check the TV is stable. A TV on a stand should sit squarely on a flat surface. A wall-mounted TV should feel firm on its bracket. Our TV wall mount guide covers fitting a bracket, and our TV bracket cost guide explains what changes that price.

Questions about cleaning a TV
Can I use glass cleaner on a TV screen?
Most TV makers advise against household glass cleaners and strong chemicals, because they can damage the screen's coatings. Check your TV's manual. If it allows a screen cleaner, put it on the cloth, never straight onto the screen.
Should I unplug the TV before cleaning it?
It is a sensible habit, and many manuals say to. A switched-off, cool screen also shows dust and smears more clearly. Electrical Safety First says that if a TV gets wet, you should unplug it immediately and stop using it.
What if liquid gets inside my TV?
Electrical Safety First says that if your TV gets wet, or the plug or wires become damaged, unplug it immediately and stop using it. Do not open the back to dry it. Contact the retailer, the maker or a qualified repair technician.
