How do you use a fridge drain hole cleaner?
A fridge drain hole cleaner is a thin, flexible tool that you push gently into the small drain hole at the back of the fridge, so meltwater can run out to the tray above the compressor again. Electrical Safety First says not to clean an electrical appliance while it is plugged in, so switch off and unplug the fridge first [S1].
Last reviewed:What does a fridge drain hole do?
Most modern fridges are frost-free or auto-defrost. Frost builds up on the cold back wall inside the fridge, then melts on a regular cycle. The water runs down a channel to a small hole near the bottom of the back wall. From there a tube takes it outside the cabinet to a tray above the compressor, where the warmth makes it evaporate.
If that hole blocks, the water has nowhere to go. It pools in the bottom of the fridge, under the salad drawers, and can freeze into a sheet of ice on the back wall. A fridge drain hole cleaner is a simple tool made to clear it. It is usually a thin, flexible plastic stick or a coiled wire with a soft tip.
QuoteZila is starting in Cheshire, with Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach among the first towns, and anyone in the UK can post a repair or cleaning job. This advice applies to any fridge with this kind of drain.
How do you know the drain hole is blocked?
The signs are usually easy to see:
- water collecting in the bottom of the fridge or under the drawers
- ice forming on the back wall that does not melt away between cycles
- a damp, stale smell from the bottom of the fridge
- water dripping onto the shelf below the back wall
Before you blame the drain, check for a split carton, a leaking bottle or a container that has tipped over. Those are quicker fixes.
How do you clear a fridge drain hole?
This is a household cleaning job, not an electrical repair. Take it slowly and do not force anything.
- Switch off and unplug the fridge. Electrical Safety First lists cleaning or repairing an electrical appliance while it is plugged in among things to avoid [S1].
- Move the food to a cool bag or another fridge, and take out the salad drawers and the lowest shelf.
- Find the hole. It is usually at the bottom of the channel on the back wall, often behind a small cover or slot.
- Soak up standing water with a cloth or towel.
- Push the cleaner in gently, twisting it as you go, to loosen any debris. Do not force it if it stops.
- Flush with warm water. A small syringe or turkey baster with warm water helps carry the loosened debris down the tube. Some people add a little bicarbonate of soda.
- Wipe and dry the inside, replace the drawers and the food, and switch the fridge back on.
Check the user manual for your fridge too. Some makers show where the drain is and say what not to use. Never use a sharp object, because cooling pipes run inside the back wall of many fridges and a puncture can end the fridge's life.
How do you keep the drain clear?
Simple habits help:
- wipe up spills straight away, especially on the bottom shelf
- keep food back from the back wall so it does not freeze on or drop into the channel
- clean the channel and the hole when you clean the fridge
- do not put hot or warm food in the fridge
The Food Standards Agency, on GOV.UK, says your fridge should be between 0 and 5°C, recommends a fridge thermometer checked once a week, and says not to place hot or warm food in the fridge [S2]. Electrical Safety First suggests defrosting your fridge and freezer at least once a year [S1].
When is it a repair job?
Clearing the hole fixes most pooling. If it does not, the problem may be elsewhere:
- The drain tube behind the fridge may be split, kinked or blocked further down.
- The tray above the compressor may be cracked or out of place.
- The door seal may be letting warm air in, so more frost forms.
- The defrost system may have failed, leaving heavy ice on the back wall.
Water on the floor round an electrical appliance needs care. Switch off and unplug the fridge, mop up, and ask an appliance repairer to look at it. Questions about fridge drain holes
Why is there water at the bottom of my fridge?
The usual cause is a blocked drain hole. Frost that forms on the back wall melts during the defrost cycle and runs down a channel into the hole. If food crumbs or slime block it, the water collects under the salad drawers instead. A spill or a leaking container can look the same, so check those first.
What can I use instead of a fridge drain hole cleaner?
A soft pipe cleaner or a length of flexible plastic tube can do the same job. Avoid anything sharp, such as a skewer or a screwdriver, because cooling pipes run inside the back wall of many fridges. Check the manufacturer's instructions for your model before you start.
How cold should a fridge be?
The Food Standards Agency, on GOV.UK, says your fridge should be set between 0 and 5°C, and recommends a fridge thermometer, checked once a week. It says not to leave the door open for long periods, as the fridge then has to work harder to lower the temperature. A fridge with a blocked drain can frost up and struggle to stay in that range.
When should I call an appliance repairer?
Call one if water keeps collecting after you have cleared the hole, if water appears under the fridge on the floor, if the back wall is covered in thick ice, or if the fridge is not keeping cold. Those can point to a fault in the drain tube, the defrost system or the seals.
Does QuoteZila check appliance repairers?
