What should a Scotchgard quote actually say?

Scotchgard, in the jobs people post, means a fabric or carpet protector they want a cleaner to apply, and the quote should name the product and the surfaces. This page does not print a drying time, a coverage rate or a maker's method.

What are people asking for?

"Scotchgard" is the name householders type when they want a protector on a sofa, a dining chair or a carpet. The name is a product name. This page does not speak for the maker, and it does not print the maker's instructions, a coverage figure or a time before you can use the room. If a cleaner offers the treatment, the quote is where those facts should appear, copied from the product they will actually use.

Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach are the first places this page is written for. Anyone in the UK can post or register.

A decorator painting walls is a different trade. A carpet cleaner who only extracts soil is a different line on the quote from someone who then applies a protector. Say which you want.

What should the quote name?

Ask for four plain lines:

  • The product name as it appears on the container, not only the word you searched.
  • The surfaces: which chairs, which carpet, and whether loose covers are included.
  • Whether a clean happens first, and whether that clean is in the same price.
  • When the room can be used again, taken from the label, including whether windows should be open. This page does not supply that time.

A quote that says "protect the sofa" and nothing else cannot be compared with a quote that names a product and lists three pieces of furniture. Citizens Advice says to be very clear about the work you want done, because that helps you get the most accurate price [S1]. It also says a quote should include a breakdown of the work and separate costs for materials [S1]. For this job, the protector is the material. Ask for it as its own line.

What should you not assume?

Do not assume the treatment makes a fabric immune to stains. This page does not say that, because it is not printing a maker's claim. Do not assume two cleaners are offering the same product because both used the search word in a message. Ask each one to write the product name.

Do not assume a lower price is the same work. Citizens Advice says comparing quotes will help you decide if you are getting a fair price [S1]. A price to spray one sofa is not a price to clean and protect a fitted carpet. Write the list of items in the job so both firms answer the same list.

Some traders charge for quotes, so ask about this first [S1]. Try to get written quotes from at least 3 traders before you decide [S1]. A quote is a fixed price. An estimate is a rough guess, so you might pay more [S1].

What if you are unhappy with the result?

GOV.UK says the law protects your consumer rights when you buy goods or services, in person or remotely, and that poor service is one of the problems that sits under that protection [S2]. You can call a helpline for advice. That helpline can refer your complaint to local Trading Standards officers, who may then investigate on your behalf [S2]. Keep the written quote, the product name and a note of the date. This page does not tell you the outcome of a complaint, and it does not say a protector has a particular life.

If the furniture was damaged by the treatment, say that in plain words to the firm first, and keep the quote that described the job. Do not invent a cause the label does not support.

Who do you hire, and who do you not?

Cleaners and carpet cleaners are the trades people ask. A plumber, a plasterer or an electrician is the wrong trade for a fabric protector. If the sofa is in a room that is also being decorated, keep the protector as its own quote so it is not buried inside a painting price.

WaterSafe and Gas Safe are nothing to do with this job. Do not add them to the post to look thorough.

Jobs you might post

These are examples, not taken from real job posts.

  • "Three-seater sofa and two armchairs, already clean. Please quote to apply a fabric protector, name the product, and say when we can sit down."
  • "Fitted carpet in a lounge, to be cleaned and then protected. Please price the clean and the protector as separate lines."
  • "Dining chairs with loose covers. Please say whether the covers are treated on or off the chairs, and name the product."

How do the replies get compared?

Lay the replies next to the list you posted. A missing product name is an incomplete reply, not a small one. A reply that adds rooms you did not mention is a different job. Ask how long the price is valid for, which Citizens Advice says a quote should state [S1].

Posting a job is not open yet

Does this page explain how to spray it yourself?

No. It does not print a distance, a drying time or a list of fabrics. Those belong on the label of the product the cleaner will use. Ask them to name the product in the quote and to say when you can sit on the furniture again, taken from that label.

Is it the same job as cleaning the carpet?

Not always. A clean removes soil. A protector is a separate treatment on top. A quote that says only 'Scotchgard the lounge' can mean a clean plus a treatment, or a treatment on a carpet that is already clean. Ask which one you are paying for.

What if the treatment does not do what you were told?

GOV.UK says the law protects your consumer rights when you buy services, including poor service. Keep the quote that names the product and the surfaces. This page does not say a treatment makes fabric stain-proof, and it does not set a time limit for a complaint.

Can it be done in a lived-in room?

Ask. This page does not say whether children, pets or a working-from-home day have to be out of the room. The quote should say when the room can be used again. If the cleaner cannot say, you do not yet have a complete price.

Does QuoteZila check cleaners?

No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.
