Plumbing, heating and electrics near you
Plumbers deal with water pipes, taps, toilets and leaks, heating engineers with boilers and radiators, and electricians with wiring, sockets and fuse boards. Gas work needs a Gas Safe registered engineer, and some electrical work must be done by a registered electrician or signed off by building control.
Last reviewed:Which trade do you need?
Water, heat and power often meet in the same room, so it is not always obvious who to call. A dripping tap is a plumber's job. A cold radiator might be a plumber or a heating engineer. A boiler that will not fire is a heating engineer's job, and needs a Gas Safe registered engineer. A tripping fuse board is an electrician's job. Solar panels and electric vehicle chargers have their own specialists.
QuoteZila is starting in Cheshire, with Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach among the first towns. Anyone in the UK can post a job or register a business. The trades in this group are listed below, with the kind of work each one usually covers.
| Trade | Typical jobs | Registers and rules to check |
|---|---|---|
| Plumbers | Leaks, taps, toilets, showers, pipework, water tanks | WaterSafe lists approved plumbers who can do certain work and issue certificates of compliance [S3] |
| Heating engineers | Boilers, radiators, heating controls, gas fires, underfloor heating | Gas work must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer [S1] |
| Electricians | Sockets, lighting, fuse boards, rewiring, electric showers | Apart from some minor tasks, the work needs a registered electrician or building control [S2] |
| Solar and EV charger installers | Solar panels, batteries, home chargers | The electrical connection follows the same rules [S2] |
What to put in your job
The more a business knows, the better its quote. For any plumbing, heating or electrical job, include:
- what is wrong, or what you want done, in plain words
- the make and age of the boiler, if the job involves heating
- whether the problem is getting worse, such as a leak spreading
- photos of the fault, the boiler, the fuse board or the area of work
- when you are free for a visit
Do not open up a boiler, take a fuse board cover off or work on pipes under pressure to get a better photo. If you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas emergency line. If water is leaking near electrics, keep away and get help.
Safety, registers and sign-off
Gas and electrical work carry real risks, and the rules reflect that. HSE says anyone employed to work on gas appliances in a home must be a Gas Safe registered engineer, competent in that area, with competencies on the back of their ID card [S1]. Electrical Safety First says that, apart from some minor tasks, electrical work must either be done by a registered electrician in a government-approved scheme, who arranges a certificate, or be reported to the local authority building control body [S2].

Questions about plumbing, heating and electrical trades
Should I call a plumber or a heating engineer?
For water pipes, taps, toilets, showers and leaks, a plumber. For a boiler, radiators that will not heat or a heating system fault, a heating engineer. Some businesses do both, so describe the problem and let them say whether it is their work.
Who can work on my gas boiler?
Only a Gas Safe registered engineer. HSE says anyone employed to work on gas appliances in a home must be on the Gas Safe Register and competent in that type of work, with competencies listed on their ID card.
Does electrical work need a registered electrician?
Electrical Safety First says that, apart from some minor tasks, electrical work must either be reported to the local authority building control body or be carried out by a registered electrician in a government-approved scheme. That electrician arranges a certificate confirming the work meets building regulations. Ask how the work will be certified.
Can I post a job if I am not in Cheshire?
Yes. QuoteZila is starting in Cheshire, but anyone in the UK can post a job or register a business. How many replies you get depends on how many businesses have joined near you.
Does QuoteZila check the businesses?
