How do you lay carpet yourself?

To lay carpet yourself, fix gripper round the room, lay and staple the underlay inside it, then rough cut the carpet, hook it on one wall and stretch it across to the others before trimming. It suits a small room that needs no seam, and stairs are better left to a fitter.

Which rooms suit a first attempt?

A small bedroom or box room, roughly square, with one door and a carpet wide enough to cover it in one piece, is the right place to start. There is no seam to make, little to cut round, and the stretch is short.

Leave these to a fitter: stairs, any room that needs two pieces joined, long hallways, rooms with bays or several doors, and patterned carpet that has to line up. The method below is the same in a box room in Crewe or Nantwich, or anywhere else. If you would rather hire, QuoteZila covers Cheshire first, with Sandbach and the towns around it, and anyone in the UK can post the job to flooring fitters.

Carpet installation explains what a professional fitter does differently, and carpet fitting costs covers what changes their price.

What do you need before you start?

  • The carpet, cut by the shop with a margin on every side
  • Underlay, and tape or staples to hold it
  • Gripper strips and the right nails or adhesive for your floor
  • A knee kicker, hired if you do not own one
  • A sharp carpet knife with spare blades
  • A stair tool or a wide bolster to tuck edges
  • A tape measure, a straight edge and gloves
  • Door bars for each doorway

Check the floor. Screw down any loose or squeaking floorboards and remove old tacks and staples. On concrete, sweep and vacuum thoroughly.

How do you fit the gripper and underlay?

  1. Fix the gripper round the edges of the room with the pins angled towards the wall. Leave a gap between the gripper and the skirting a little less than the thickness of the carpet, so the edge can be tucked into it.
  2. Leave the doorway clear of gripper where the door bar will go.
  3. Roll out the underlay inside the gripper, not over it. The underlay should butt up to the gripper strip.
  4. Join underlay pieces edge to edge with tape, never overlapped.
  5. Fix the underlay to a timber floor with staples. On concrete, use the adhesive the underlay maker recommends.

How do you lay and stretch the carpet?

  1. Unroll the carpet in the room with the pile running the way you want, usually away from the main window or towards the door. Let it relax flat if the shop suggests it.
  2. Rough cut so there is a margin turned up on every wall.
  3. Hook one long edge. Start in a corner, press the carpet onto the gripper along one wall, and work along it.
  4. Use the knee kicker on the next wall. Place the head a short distance from the wall, nudge it firmly with your knee, and press the carpet onto the pins. Work along the wall, then do the same on the remaining walls.
  5. Check for ripples by looking across the floor at a low angle. If there are any, release the edge and stretch again.

Kneeling and kicking all day is hard on the knees. Take breaks, use a knee pad, and stop if anything hurts.

How do you trim the edges and finish the doorway?

  1. Trim the margin along each wall, leaving enough to tuck down. Cut with the blade angled slightly towards the wall.
  2. Tuck the edge into the gap between the gripper and the skirting with the stair tool or bolster.
  3. Cut round the door frame with small relief cuts, then trim to the shape.
  4. Fit the door bar so it holds the carpet edge and joins neatly to the floor in the next room.
  5. Check the door. If it now catches on the new carpet, take it off and trim the bottom carefully.

What do you do with the old carpet and the offcuts?

Old carpet and underlay are bulky. GOV.UK's waste code says you can take household waste to your council's household waste and recycling centre if it accepts it, check whether the council offers special collections, or use a business that provides a waste collection service [S2]. If a private business takes it, you should check it is an authorised carrier with a valid registration [S2].

Keep a few offcuts. They are useful for patching later.

When should you stop and call a fitter?

Stop if the carpet will not stretch flat however many times you restretch it, if you need a seam you cannot hide, or if the floor moves under the gripper. A carpet that ripples or lifts is a trip risk. The NHS falls guidance lists things you could trip on, such as loose wires or rugs, among the things to avoid at home [S1].

Citizens Advice suggests trying to get written quotes from at least 3 different traders [S3]. Send photos of the room and the half-finished carpet so the fitter can see what is needed.

Questions about laying carpet

Can I lay carpet without a knee kicker?

Not well. Without some way to stretch the carpet onto the gripper, it will look flat on the day and ripple once it is walked on. Knee kickers can be hired. A power stretcher is better for anything bigger than a small bedroom, and that is usually the point to call a fitter.

Should I reuse the old gripper?

Only if it is firmly fixed, the pins are sharp and it sits the right distance from the skirting. Gripper that is loose, rusty or missing in places should be replaced. Mind the pins when you lift the old carpet, and wear gloves.

Can I lay carpet on stairs myself?

It is possible but much harder than a room. Each step has to be gripped and stretched separately and shaped over the nosing. A stair carpet that moves is a trip risk, and the NHS falls guidance lists things you could trip on among the things to avoid at home. Professional carpet installation is usually the safer route for stairs.

Where should the old carpet go?

GOV.UK's waste code says you can take household waste to your council's household waste and recycling centre if it accepts it, or ask whether the council offers special collections. If a business offers to take it, check it is a registered waste carrier first.

Does QuoteZila check carpet fitters?

No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.
