Is there a standard bath height, and how is it measured?
Bath height is measured from the finished floor to the top of the rim, and it changes with the bath model, its legs or cradle, the floor build-up and the waste. This page does not print one standard figure, so check the maker's drawing and measure your room.
Last reviewed:How is bath height measured?
Bath height means the distance from the finished floor to the top edge of the rim, where you would sit to swing your legs over. It is not the depth of the water, and it is not the height of the tub on its own before it is fitted.
Things that change the height in your room:
- The bath model. Every bath has its own overall height on the maker's drawing.
- Legs or cradle. Most fitted baths sit on adjustable legs or a frame, which gives a range rather than one fixed figure.
- The floor. New tiles, boards or a raised floor change where the bath sits relative to you.
- The waste. The trap under the plughole needs space, and that can limit how low the bath can go.
- A panel or plinth. A built-up surround can change how high the rim feels to step over.
QuoteZila is starting in Cheshire, with Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach among the first towns, and anyone in the UK can post a job. This page explains how to think about bath height before you choose a new bath.
Why does this page not give one number?
Because a single number would not tell you what you need. Two baths sold as standard can differ, and the same bath can be set at different heights depending on the legs and floor. A fitter works from the maker's drawing, the waste route and your floor, not from a rule of thumb.
The useful question is: what rim height will suit the people using this bath, and can this bath and floor give it?
How do you choose the right height for your household?
Think about who uses the bath and how:
- Getting in and out. A lower rim is easier to step over. A higher one can be easier to sit on and swing round.
- Children. Bathing small children means kneeling beside the bath, so consider what is comfortable for the adult too.
- Older people or anyone with limited mobility. The NHS suggests using a non-slip mat in the bath or shower and fitting grab rails in the bathroom to reduce the risk of falls [S1].
- A shower over the bath. The rim height affects how high the screen sits and how easy the step in is.
If someone in the home has particular needs, an occupational therapist can advise on bath aids, seats and adaptations before you buy.
What safety rules apply to a new bath?
Two to be aware of.
Hot water. Approved Document G says the hot water supply to any fixed bath must include measures so the water delivered to it does not exceed 48°C [S2]. That requirement applies only when a dwelling is built, or formed by a material change of use [S2]. In an existing home, you can still ask a plumber about a blending valve if scalding is a worry.
Electrics near the bath. The Planning Portal says that in England, the spaces around baths and showers are special locations, and alterations to circuits there are notifiable [S3]. If a new bath means moving lights, a shaver point or an extractor fan, use a registered electrician. You can find one through Electrical Safety First.

What should you ask a bathroom fitter?
Ask each fitter the same questions:
- What height will the rim sit at with this bath on my floor?
- Can the legs be adjusted after fitting, and by how much?
- Does the waste route limit how low the bath can go?
- Will you supply and fit the panel, and how is it fixed for access?
- Is anything electrical moving, and who will do that work?

Questions about bath height
Where do I find the height of a particular bath?
On the maker's technical drawing or specification sheet, which most retailers link from the product page. It usually shows the height of the bath and the range the legs allow. Measure your floor and any step or platform too, because the rim height in the room is what matters.
Can a bath be raised or lowered?
Within limits. Adjustable legs can move it a little. A bigger change usually means a plinth, a different bath, or moving the waste, which is a plumbing job. Ask a fitter what your bath and floor allow.
What height suits an older person?
There is no single answer, because it depends on the person's legs, balance and how they get in. The NHS suggests a non-slip mat in the bath or shower and grab rails in the bathroom to help prevent falls. An occupational therapist can advise on aids and adaptations.
Does a new bath need a temperature limit?
In a new home, yes. Approved Document G says the hot water supply to a fixed bath must keep water delivered to it at no more than 48°C, but this requirement applies only when a dwelling is built or formed by a change of use. Ask your plumber about a blending valve in other homes.
Does QuoteZila check the fitters who quote?
No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.
