Are rope handrails a good idea for stairs?
A rope handrail can work on stairs if it sits at the right height, is fixed into something solid and stays taut enough to grip. In Cheshire, ask a joiner to check it meets the stair rules, because a rope is a handrail, not guarding.
Last reviewed:Why do people choose rope handrails?
Rope handrails suit cottages, barn conversions and coastal-style hallways, and some homeowners in Cheshire choose them for any stair. If you live in Crewe, Nantwich or Sandbach and want to swap a plain rail for a rope, this page covers what to check before anyone drills into the wall. Anyone in the UK can post or register on QuoteZila too.
A rope rail is softer to look at than a timber or metal rail, and it can follow a curved or narrow stair where a straight rail is awkward. It is a handrail, though, and a handrail has a job. People grab it when they slip. That means the height, the fixings and the tension matter more than the look.
How high should a rope handrail sit?
Approved Document K, the government guidance on stairs and protection from falling, says to position the top of the handrail 900mm to 1000mm from the pitch line or floor [S1]. The pitch line is an imaginary line along the front edges, or nosings, of the treads. On a landing, measure from the floor.
A rope hangs between brackets, so its height is not the same all the way along. Measure at the brackets and between them once the rope is fitted and tensioned. If the rope sags out of that range in the middle, it needs more brackets or more tension.
Approved Document K also says that if the stairs are 1000mm or wider, a handrail should be on both sides [S1]. Many house stairs are narrower than that, so one side is often enough. Measure the clear width of your own stair before you decide.
What should a rope handrail be fixed to?
A rope rail is only as strong as its brackets and what they are screwed into. Each bracket should go into solid masonry, a timber stud, or a newel post, with fixings suited to that material. Plasterboard on its own is not a fixing. Ask the joiner what is behind the wall and how they will find out.
The ends need care too. Rope is usually finished with a metal end cup or a cleat at the top and bottom. Ends that can catch a sleeve or a bag strap are a trip hazard. Ask how the ends will be finished and whether the rope can be re-tensioned later without taking everything down.
Thickness matters for grip. A thin rope is hard to hold and a very fat one is hard to wrap a hand around. Hold a sample before you order the full length.
Is a rope handrail enough on an open stair?
Usually not. On many stairs the banister does two jobs: you hold the rail, and the spindles underneath stop people, and especially children, from falling through. Approved Document K says dwellings need guarding at the sides of flights and landings where there is a drop of more than 600mm [S1]. In a building that may be used by children under five, it says guarding should stop a 100mm sphere passing through any opening [S1].
A single rope leaves a large gap below it, so it cannot do the guarding job. If the open side of your stair has spindles or a balustrade, keep it. A rope can be added along the wall side as a second handrail. If you want to take out a balustrade and redesign the open side, treat it as a staircase job and talk to a joiner first.

When should you get a joiner in?
Get a joiner or carpenter if the stair is open on one side, if the wall is plasterboard or crumbling plaster, if you want the rope to run round a turn or a landing, or if you are replacing a whole banister. Say whether the house has young children or older people who rely on the rail.
GOV.UK lists many alteration projects that might need building regulations approval and says to check with a building control body if you cannot decide [S2]. Swapping like for like is unlikely to raise it, but a new stair layout or new guarding is a bigger change. Ask the joiner, and ask building control if you are unsure. GOV.UK explains building regulations approval.
Our joiners and carpenters pages cover stairs and handrails. If the whole stair needs work, staircase renovation costs and staircase costs explain what changes the price.

Jobs you might post
These are examples, not taken from real job posts.
- Replace a wall-side timber handrail with a rope rail on a straight stair. Wall is old plaster on brick.
- Add a rope handrail on the wall side of a stair that already has spindles on the open side. Customer wants brass brackets.
- Outdoor rope handrail on three garden steps beside decking. Joiner to advise on posts and rope for outdoor use.
Post a handrail job
A photo of the stair from the bottom, and a note of the width and what the wall is made of, helps a joiner quote. Your job goes to up to five matched local businesses [QZ2]. QuoteZila is free for customers and local businesses [QZ1].

Questions about rope handrails
How high should a rope handrail be?
Approved Document K says to position the top of a stair handrail 900mm to 1000mm from the pitch line or floor. The pitch line runs along the front edges of the treads. Measure from there, not from the floor at the bottom of the stairs.
Do I need a handrail on both sides?
Approved Document K says that if the stairs are 1000mm or wider, a handrail should be provided on both sides. Measure your own stair. A rope on the wall side does not replace a handrail on the open side if the stair is that wide.
Can a rope replace the banister on an open stair?
Not on its own. A banister usually forms guarding as well as a handrail. Approved Document K says dwellings need guarding at the sides of flights and landings where there is a drop of more than 600mm. A single rope leaves a wide gap underneath, so keep or replace the guarding and add the rope as a handrail if you like.
Can I use a rope handrail outside on decking steps?
You can, but think about weather. Natural rope can stretch, go slippery when wet and rot over time, and synthetic rope can fade in sun. Ask the person fitting it which rope and brackets are made for outdoor use, and check the posts it is fixed to are sound.
Does QuoteZila check joiners?
No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.
