Which way should a door swing?
A door's swing is the direction it opens and the side its hinges are on, and the right choice is the one that keeps the doorway clear, opens against a wall and does not hit furniture, radiators or people. Changing the swing means rehanging the door and moving the hinges, latch and stops.
Last reviewed:What does "door swing" mean?
A door's swing is two things together: which way it opens, into the room or out of it, and which side its hinges are on. The space the door sweeps through as it opens is its swing area. Anything in that area, from a bed to a radiator, will be hit by the door or will stop it opening fully.
When you change a door, a lock or a floor, the swing matters. A door ordered with the hinges on the wrong side will not fit the frame without changes. A new, thicker floor can stop a door swinging over it.

Which way should an internal door open?
There is no single rule for every room. These questions help:
- Where will the door rest when open? Ideally flat against a wall, not across the room or the light switch.
- Which side is the light switch? It helps to reach the switch as you walk in, on the side away from the hinges.
- What is in the swing area? A bed, wardrobe, radiator or toilet can stop a door opening fully.
- Who uses the room? If someone might fall against the door inside a small room, such as a toilet, a door that opens outwards, or a sliding door, can be easier to open from outside. Ask a joiner whether that suits your doorway.
- Where do people walk? A door that opens out into a narrow landing or hall can hit someone walking past.
What about outside doors and patio doors?
Many front and back doors open inwards, which keeps the hinges inside the house. Some French and patio doors open outwards to save space in the room.
If you replace a glazed door, the glass in it matters as much as the swing. The Planning Portal says safety glazing should be provided within any glazed door up to 1500mm from floor level [S2]. Ask the installer whether the glass meets that. Patio doors covers the choice between sliding, French and bifold doors.
Why does a door swing open or shut by itself?
A door that will not stay where you leave it is usually not hanging upright.
- The frame leans. If the hinge side of the frame is slightly off vertical, the door will drift open or shut.
- Loose hinges. Screws that have worked loose let the door drop and twist.
- Worn hinges. Old hinges with worn pins let the door sag.
- Draughts. Air moving through the house can push a light door, especially when windows are open.
A joiner can check the frame with a level, pack or adjust the hinges, or fit hinges designed to hold the door in place. If the door also sticks or rubs, our door jammed page explains the causes.
What about fire doors and doors on your way out?
Fire doors are meant to swing shut by themselves. They have a closer that pulls them into the frame. Never wedge a fire door open or take its closer off.
On double fire doors where one leaf has to close before the other, GOV.UK's fire door guidance says a door selector may be fitted so the doors swing closed in the right order, and that it should be checked to make sure it is working [S1]. If yours closes in the wrong order and leaves a gap, report it to whoever manages the building. Fire door locks covers what can be changed on a fire door.
For every door on your way out of the house, the swing area needs to stay clear. The government's Fire Kills campaign says not to let clutter, furniture or belongings block doors, hallways or windows, because you need clear, quick access to all exits [S3].
How do you change which way a door swings?
Changing the swing means rehanging the door. On an internal door, a joiner or carpenter will:
- Take the door off and move the hinge positions to the other edge.
- Fill and repair the old hinge recesses on the door and the frame.
- Move the latch, handle and strike plate to the new side.
- Move the door stops if the door will now open the other way.
- Rehang the door and adjust it so it closes cleanly.
Sometimes a new door is simpler than reworking an old one. How to hang a door explains the stages. If the frame itself is damaged or out of square, door frame replacement covers that job.
Our joiners and carpenters pages cover the trades, and some handymen take on simple internal doors. Citizens Advice suggests getting written quotes from at least 3 different traders before you decide on one [S4].

Questions about door swings
How do I tell if a door is left-hand or right-hand?
Makers and fitters do not all use the same rule. Some describe the door from the side it opens towards, others from the side it opens away from. When you order a door or a lock, say which side the hinges are on and which way the door opens, as seen from a named room, and send a photo.
Why does my door swing shut, or open, on its own?
Usually because the door is not hanging perfectly upright. If the hinge side of the frame leans slightly, gravity pulls the door one way. Loose hinge screws can do the same. A joiner can check the frame with a level and adjust the hinges.
Can I reverse an internal door myself?
On a simple internal door, some people do. It means moving the hinges to the other side, moving the latch and strike plate, and refitting the door stops. Fire doors, glazed doors and outside doors are jobs for a professional.
Does QuoteZila check joiners and carpenters?
No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.
