What is a macerator toilet, and who should fit one?
A macerator toilet chops waste and pumps it through a smaller pipe, which is why people ask for one where a normal soil stack is hard to reach. In Cheshire the pump and the pipe are jobs for registered trades, and this page gives no fitting steps.
Last reviewed:Why do people ask for a macerator toilet?
In Cheshire, a macerator toilet comes up when someone wants a WC in a room that is a long way from the soil stack, or below the level where waste can fall by gravity. That brief is the one this page is written for, starting with rooms in Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach. The machine grinds the waste and a pump pushes it along a smaller pipe to a point where the normal drainage can take it. That is a different brief from swapping a close-coupled pan in a bathroom that already drains properly.
This page does not name a brand or a pipe diameter. This page does not print a figure, because we could not find two dated public sources that agree on one. It also does not tell you to cut pipe, open an electrical connection, or lift a floor. Those are the installer's steps, from the instructions for the unit they are prepared to fit.
Anyone in the UK can post a job or register. Because QuoteZila is new, the number of replies depends on who has joined near you [QZ5].
Who does the plumbing, and who does the electrics?
Split the job in the post, or you will get quotes that leave a gap.
The waste side is plumbing. WaterSafe describes its register as a directory of plumbers, water supply pipe installers and other water specialists, and says approved contractors issue certificates of compliance [S2]. That is their scheme. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. Search the directory yourself if a certificate matters to you.
The pump needs power. That is electrical work, not a favour at the end of a plumbing quote unless the quote says an electrician is included. Look up a registered electrician yourself.
Electrical Safety First: find a registered electrician; NICEIC; NAPIT. QuoteZila is not affiliated with this organisation.
You can search for a registered electrician via Electrical Safety First, NICEIC or NAPIT.
GOV.UK lists both "install a bathroom that will involve plumbing" and "change electrics near a bath or shower" among alteration projects that might need building regulations approval [S1]. A macerator in a cloakroom is not automatically either sentence. If the room has a bath or shower, or the job is a new bathroom, say so. If it is a WC in a cupboard under the stairs, say that instead. Check with a building control body when you cannot tell which description fits [S1]. You do not need to arrange approval yourself where the person doing the work is on a competent person scheme [S1].
GOV.UK: find your local council for building control. QuoteZila is not affiliated with this organisation.
The approval rules are on GOV.UK [S1].
What should the quote separate?
Citizens Advice says a quote should include a fixed total price, a breakdown of the work and materials, how long the price is valid, whether VAT is included, and when the price can go up [S3]. A quote is a fixed price. An estimate is a rough guess [S3]. Get it in writing, and try to collect written quotes from at least 3 traders [S3]. Some traders charge for a quote, so ask before the visit [S3].
Ask each quote to split:
- the pan and the macerator unit
- the waste run, including where it joins the existing drain
- the electrical connection, and who does it
- making good the floor, the boxing-in, and decoration
- what happens if the joists will not take the route they hoped for
A business registers for VAT when taxable turnover for the last 12 months goes over £90,000, or is expected to do so within 30 days [S4]. Ask whether the figure includes VAT.
If they want money before the unit arrives, Citizens Advice says to avoid large upfront payments, to consider buying the materials yourself, and not to agree more than 25% where a deposit cannot be avoided [S3]. Get a receipt [S3].
What belongs in the Cheshire description?
- The room, and the floor it is on.
- Whether a toilet is already there.
- The nearest soil pipe you know about, without opening anything to find it.
- Whether the room also has a bath, shower or basin.
- Access for a van, and a parking note.
- Your postcode.
Photos of the room and of the outside wall, taken from the ground, are enough. Do not take a floorboard up to "help".
Plumbers cover water and waste. Electricians cover the supply to the pump. Bathroom fitters are the page when the toilet is part of a whole room. The plumber cost guide explains how to read a plumbing price when no hourly figure is printed.
Jobs you might post
These are examples, not taken from real job posts.
- A WC in a ground-floor room that has no soil pipe in the corner. Ask the quote to separate the unit, the pumped run, and the electrical connection.
- Replace a macerator that has failed in a cloakroom. Say you do not know the brand, and that you have not opened the unit.
- A basement room where waste cannot fall by gravity. Ask the installer to say where the pipe will join the drain, and whether building control is their job or yours.
How should you choose between quotes?
Compare the route of the pipe before you compare the totals. A quote that stops at the unit is not a quote that includes the run to the stack. Citizens Advice says a much lower price may mean the work is not the same work [S3]. Be wary of a trader who will not put the price in writing [S3].
Ask to see insurance, and check the policy will still be in force when the work finishes [S3]. Pay by card if you can, rather than cash for the whole job before it starts [S3].

What do people ask about macerator toilets?
Can I fit a macerator toilet myself?
This page says no. The unit has a pump, so there is an electrical connection, and there is a waste pipe that must not leak. GOV.UK lists installing a bathroom that will involve plumbing, and changing electrics near a bath or shower, among jobs that might need building regulations approval. Ask a plumber and an electrician which parts they will each do.
Does the plumber need to be on a water register?
WaterSafe describes itself as an online directory of plumbers and other water specialists, and says approved contractors can issue a certificate of compliance. QuoteZila does not look that directory up for you. If you want a contractor who appears on it, search it yourself and ask which name they trade under.
Will building regulations apply?
They might. GOV.UK says you might need building regulations approval for an alteration such as installing a bathroom that will involve plumbing, and that approval is different from planning permission. You do not have to arrange the approval yourself if you use someone registered with a competent person scheme. Ask the installer which route they will use for your room.
Does QuoteZila check the businesses?
No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.
Can I post this job on QuoteZila?
Yes. Say which room the toilet would go in, whether there is already a soil pipe, and add a Cheshire postcode. Up to five matched local businesses can quote. QuoteZila is free for customers and local businesses.
