Who should work on an Intergas boiler?
An Intergas boiler is a gas boiler, so anyone employed to work on it in a home must be a Gas Safe registered engineer competent for that work. This page does not compare models or print outputs, because those details belong on the data plate and in the engineer's quote.
Last reviewed:What does this page leave out?
Intergas is a make of gas boiler that people ask engineers to service, repair or replace. The questions that matter are who may work on it, how you check that person, and what a written quote should contain. Model outputs, heat-exchanger layouts and warranty years are not printed here. If a part inside the boiler is the worry, see boiler heat exchangers. If you are comparing the cost of a new combi of any make, see combi boiler quotes.
QuoteZila's first towns include Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach in Cheshire. Anyone in the UK can post a job or register. The Gas Safe check does not change with the town.
How do you check the engineer?
HSE says anyone employed to work on gas appliances in domestic premises must be a Gas Safe registered engineer, competent in that area of gas work, and that the competencies are clearly marked on the back of the Gas Safe Register identity card [S1]. You can check the registration with Gas Safe Register if you are unsure [S1].
Gas Safe Register. QuoteZila is not affiliated with this organisation.
The registration rule is in HSE's domestic gas questions. The public register is the Gas Safe Register.
Look at the card before the case comes off. A service visit and a boiler change are not the same line of work. Ask which competencies the visit needs, and whether this engineer has them for an Intergas appliance, not only for boilers in general. We do not look the card up for you.
Service, safety and a new boiler
HSE strongly advises home owners that gas appliances, flues and pipework are installed, regularly maintained and serviced at least annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer [S2]. Keep the last service note if you have one, and say in the post if you do not.
If you suspect the boiler is unsafe, HSE says it is illegal to use it. Turn the appliance off and do not touch it until a Gas Safe registered engineer has checked it [S2]. That includes an Intergas boiler that is leaking, smelling of gas, or locking out and being reset again and again. Do not remove the front panel to investigate.
A replacement is building work as well as gas work. GOV.UK lists installing or replacing a heating system among projects that might need building regulations approval, and says you do not need to arrange that approval yourself if the installer is on a competent person scheme [S4]. Ask how the completed job is recorded.
Where a new or replacement fixed gas-burning appliance is installed in a home, other than an appliance used only for cooking, Approved Document J says a carbon monoxide alarm should be provided in the room where the appliance is located [S5]. Ask for the alarm in the quote if the boiler is being replaced. This page does not set out the alarm's position on the wall.
What should the quote include?
An Intergas quote that is silent about controls may be assuming the old ones stay. Ask whether a programmer, a room thermostat and thermostatic radiator valves are already there, and whether a cylinder, if you still have one, has its own thermostat. This page does not print a required set of controls.
Other lines worth having in writing:
- Service only, repair, or replacement.
- The model they will supply, copied from a specification, not from memory of the brand.
- Whether the boiler stays in the same place.
- Flue, condensate pipe and gas pipe, if any of those change.
- What happens to the old boiler.
- Whether VAT is included. A business registers for VAT when taxable turnover goes over £90,000 [S6].
Citizens Advice says to collect written quotes from at least three traders. A quote is a fixed price. An estimate is a rough guess [S7]. For a deposit, do not agree to more than 25 per cent, and get a receipt [S7].
Jobs you might post
These are examples, not taken from real job posts.
- "Intergas combi in the kitchen, annual service due. Please send a Gas Safe engineer whose card covers a service. Model number photographed on the front of the case."
- "Intergas boiler locks out. Do not ask me to open it. Please diagnose and quote the repair."
- "Replace the Intergas combi like for like in the same cupboard. Include the flue seal, a carbon monoxide alarm and a note of whether the existing programmer and room thermostat stay."
Posting an Intergas job
The model number and the symptom are enough to start. Up to five matched local businesses can send a quote [QZ2]. QuoteZila is free for customers and local businesses [QZ1].
Honest status: QuoteZila is new. We're starting in Cheshire, beginning with Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach, and growing area by area. Anyone in the UK can still post a job or register a business. How fast you get quotes depends on how many local businesses have joined near you. Businesses can register and receive jobs straight away. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire.

Questions about Intergas boilers
Does an Intergas boiler need a Gas Safe engineer?
Yes. HSE says anyone employed to work on gas appliances in a home must be a Gas Safe registered engineer and competent in that area of gas work. The competencies are on the back of the identity card. Ask the engineer to confirm the card covers the work you want, whether that is a service or a replacement.
Where are the model details?
On the plate fixed to the boiler, which you can often read without removing the cover. Copy the model into the job. This page does not list outputs, flue kits or warranty periods, because those differ by model and are not something to guess from the brand name.
How often should it be serviced?
HSE strongly advises that gas appliances, flues and pipework are serviced at least annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If you suspect the boiler is unsafe, turn it off and do not touch it until a Gas Safe registered engineer has checked it. Using an appliance you suspect is unsafe is illegal.
What should the quote say about controls?
Ask whether a programmer, a room thermostat and thermostatic radiator valves are already fitted, and whether a cylinder, if you still have one, has its own thermostat. This page does not print a control specification. Ask the quote to say which of those stay and which are included.
Does QuoteZila check the engineers?
No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.
This page is general information, not professional or legal advice. QuoteZila does not check Gas Safe, WaterSafe, NFRC, NICEIC or other registrations against the register on your behalf: look them up yourself.
