What should you do about an F2 boiler fault?
An F2 code is a fault message whose meaning is set by the boiler's maker, so the same code can point to different problems on different brands and models. Read the user guide for your model, and if you suspect the boiler is unsafe, HSE says to turn it off until a Gas Safe registered engineer has checked it [S1].
Last reviewed:What is an F2 boiler fault code?
A boiler shows a fault code when its controls detect something outside the conditions it is designed to run in. Many boilers then lock out, which means they stop and wait for the fault to be cleared. The code is a short label for that fault.
Each manufacturer writes its own list. F2 is one of the codes several makers use, but the fault behind it changes from brand to brand and sometimes between models from the same brand. That is why this page does not give a single meaning for F2. The meaning that counts is the one printed in the guide for the boiler on your wall.
QuoteZila is starting in Cheshire, with Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach among the first towns, and anyone in the UK can post a heating job. A fault code means the same thing on the same model wherever you live.
How do you find out what F2 means on your boiler?
Start with the make and model. They are usually on the front panel, under a flap or on a data label. Then look in this order:
- The user guide. Many guides have a fault code table near the back. It will say what the code means and whether a householder can do anything.
- The manufacturer. Makers publish guides for current and older models and run customer help lines.
- A Gas Safe registered engineer. If the guide says to call an engineer, or the code does not appear in it, book one.
Do not rely on a code list for a different boiler. The same code on another make can mean something else entirely, and following the wrong advice can waste time or make things worse.
When is a reset not the answer?
Some guides allow a reset button press after certain faults. That is only a way to restart the boiler once the cause has gone. It is not a repair. Stop and call an engineer if:
- the code comes back after a reset
- the guide says the fault needs an engineer
- you can smell gas or burning, or see scorching or soot round the boiler
- the boiler is making unusual banging or whistling noises
- anything would mean taking the casing off
HSE says it is illegal for anyone to use a gas appliance they suspect is unsafe. Turn it off and do not touch it until a Gas Safe registered engineer has checked it [S1]. You can check an engineer's registration on the Gas Safe Register.

What safety signs matter more than the code?
A fault code is the boiler talking about itself. Your senses matter more. If you smell gas, HSE gives the National Gas Emergency freephone number, 0800 111 999 [S1].
The NHS says carbon monoxide has no colour or smell, and that symptoms of poisoning include a headache, dizziness, feeling sick, tiredness and confusion [S2]. It recommends a carbon monoxide alarm in each room with an appliance that burns gas, oil, coal or wood [S2]. If an alarm sounds, or anyone has those symptoms, follow the NHS advice and do not try to clear the fault.
If your boiler shows low pressure rather than a code, our page on how to increase boiler pressure covers that problem.
What should you tell the engineer about the fault?
Give the engineer enough to bring the right parts:
- the make, model and age of the boiler
- the exact code and any other symbols on the display, with a photo
- when it first appeared and whether it comes and goes
- whether hot water, heating or both have stopped
- what the pressure gauge reads
- any recent work on the boiler, the gas meter or the heating pipes
Ask for the diagnosis and the price of the repair in writing before work starts. Citizens Advice says to try to get written quotes from at least 3 different traders, and that some traders charge for quotes, so ask about this first [S3]. Our plumber cost guide explains call-out charges and hourly rates, and a boiler service is the regular visit where wear is spotted early.

Questions about the F2 boiler fault
What does F2 mean on a boiler?
It depends on the make and model. Fault codes are set by each manufacturer, so F2 on one boiler is not the same message as F2 on another. The user guide, the label inside the flap or the maker's own help line will say what it means for your boiler. Give that model name to the engineer when you book.
Can I reset the boiler after an F2 code?
Only if the user guide for your model says a householder can, and only in the way it describes. If the code comes back after a reset, stop and book a Gas Safe registered engineer. Repeated resets hide a fault rather than fix it. HSE says anyone employed to work on gas appliances in a home must be Gas Safe registered.
Is an F2 fault an emergency?
The code alone may simply mean the boiler has shut itself down. A smell of gas is an emergency. HSE says to call the National Gas Emergency freephone number on 0800 111 999, open all doors and windows, and shut off the gas at the meter control valve if you know where it is.
Could the fault be linked to carbon monoxide?
A fault code does not tell you that. The NHS says carbon monoxide cannot be seen or smelt, and lists symptoms including headache, dizziness, feeling sick, tiredness and confusion. If anyone in the house has those symptoms, treat it as an emergency and follow the NHS advice, whatever the display says.
