How do you extend a washing machine water pipe?
If a washing machine fill hose is too short, a single longer hose made for the machine is usually safer than joining two together, and a drain hose extension needs a secure joint and the right height. In Cheshire, ask a plumber to move the valve or waste if the gap is large.
Last reviewed:Why do washing machine hoses end up too short?
If your washing machine will not quite reach its pipes after a move or a refit in Cheshire, there are a few ways to fix it. Whether you are in Crewe, Nantwich, Sandbach or elsewhere, the fix depends on which pipe is short and by how much. Anyone in the UK can post or register on QuoteZila.
A washing machine has two water connections:
- The fill hose, or inlet hose, which brings cold water from a valve on the supply pipe. It is under mains pressure whenever the valve is open.
- The drain hose, which carries waste water from the machine's pump to a standpipe or a spigot on the sink trap.
Both come in set lengths. Move the machine into a new space, swap to a new machine, or fit new units, and one of them can fall short.
How do you extend the fill hose?
The simplest answer is a longer fill hose. Buy one made for washing machines, with the right fittings for your machine and your valve, and long enough to reach without being stretched tight. Avoid a hose so long that it loops and kinks behind the machine.
Joining two hoses with a connector is possible, but it adds a joint under constant pressure. If that joint fails while you are out, water keeps flowing until someone turns the valve off. Check your machine's instructions, because they say what fill hoses can be used.
To fit a new fill hose:
- turn the washing machine valve off, usually a lever or a slotted valve on the pipe
- have a towel and a bowl ready, and unscrew the old hose at the valve and the machine
- check the rubber washers are in both ends of the new hose
- screw it on by hand, then turn the valve on slowly and watch both ends for drips
If the valve is stiff, weeping or very old, ask a plumber to replace it at the same time.
How do you extend the drain hose?
Drain hoses are low pressure but have their own limits. The machine's pump has to push water up to the waste and along the hose. The instructions give limits for the length of the hose and the height of the outlet. Stay inside them.
Drain hose extension kits use a connector to join a second length. Make sure the joint is secure and cannot be pulled apart when the machine vibrates. Keep the hose free of dips and kinks, and keep the end at the height the instructions set, usually hooked into a standpipe or pushed onto a trap spigot with a clip.
If the waste is more than a short step away, extending the hose is the wrong fix. Ask a plumber to move the standpipe or add a connection to the sink waste nearer the machine.
When is it better to move the plumbing?
Move the valve and waste if the gap is large, if the hose would have to run across a doorway or behind other appliances, or if you are refitting the kitchen anyway. A plumber can extend the supply pipe, fit a new valve where the machine will stand, and run a new waste. That gives you short, tidy hoses and fewer joints.
Think about the electrics at the same time. Electrical Safety First says to check the current rating of an extension lead before plugging appliances into it, and not to plug in appliances that together exceed it [S1]. It also says not to plug one extension lead into another, because the plug in the wall could overheat [S1]. If the socket is in the wrong place, a properly placed socket fitted by an electrician is the safer answer. This page gives no steps for electrical work.
GOV.UK says that additional power points on an existing circuit do not need to be told to a building control body, except around baths and showers, but a new circuit does unless the electrician is on a competent person scheme [S2]. Our plumbers page covers moving washing machine plumbing.
What should you check after any change?
Run a short wash with the machine where you can watch it. Check the fill hose at both ends while the machine takes in water, and the drain hose joint and outlet while it pumps out. Look again after a full cycle. Feel the floor behind the machine.
Small leaks behind appliances can go unseen until a floor or skirting is damaged. Keep the valve accessible so anyone in the house can turn it off quickly.
Citizens Advice says a quote is a fixed price and an estimate is just a rough guess, so ask for a written quote for moving the plumbing [S3]. It says some traders charge for quotes, so ask about this first [S3]. If the machine itself is faulty, our appliance repair page may suit.

Jobs you might post
These are examples, not taken from real job posts.
- Washing machine moving across the utility room. Plumber to extend the cold supply, fit a new valve and move the standpipe.
- New machine's drain hose will not reach the sink trap. Customer wants a plumber to add a waste connection closer to the machine.
- Moving a washing machine into a garage. Plumber for the water and waste, electrician for a socket.
Ask a plumber to move it
Measure how far the machine is from the valve and the waste, and add a photo. Your job goes to up to five matched local businesses [QZ2]. QuoteZila is free for customers and local businesses [QZ1].

Questions about extending washing machine pipes
Can I join two fill hoses together?
It adds a joint that can leak under mains pressure while the machine is unattended. A single hose of the right length, made for washing machines, is usually the safer choice. Check the machine's instructions, which say what hoses can be used.
How long can a drain hose be?
It depends on the machine, because the pump has to lift water up to the waste. The instructions give the limits on length and height. Go beyond them and the machine may drain slowly or show a fault. If the waste is far away, ask a plumber to bring the waste closer.
Can I use an extension lead if the plug will not reach either?
Electrical Safety First says to check the current rating of an extension lead and not to plug in appliances that together exceed it, and not to plug one extension lead into another. A washing machine is a heavy load. A better answer is a socket in the right place, fitted by an electrician.
Do I need building regulations approval to move the plumbing?
Usually not for a simple move. GOV.UK says most repairs, replacements and maintenance work do not need to be told to building control, but a new electrical circuit does, unless the electrician is on a competent person scheme. Ask your plumber and electrician.
