Which wood glue works outside?
For outdoor wood, use a glue the label says is water-resistant or waterproof for exterior use, such as an exterior PVA, a polyurethane or a two-part epoxy. Glue joins and repairs well, but anything that carries weight or people outdoors also needs proper mechanical fixings.
Last reviewed:Why does wood glue fail outside?
Indoors, a glued joint stays dry and at a fairly steady temperature. Outside, it is rained on, dries out, freezes, warms in the sun, and is pushed by wind. The timber swells and shrinks with every change. A glue made only for indoor use can soften when wet or crack as the wood moves, and the joint opens.
So the first rule is simple: use a glue sold for exterior use, and match it to the job.
QuoteZila starts in Cheshire, with Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach first, and anyone in the UK can post a job for outdoor joinery.
Which types of glue work outdoors?
Exterior PVA. A white or cream wood glue like the indoor kind, but made to resist water. It suits close-fitting joints in garden furniture, planters and trims. Read the label for the water resistance it claims, and whether it is meant for joints that will be rained on.
Polyurethane glue. It cures using moisture and foams slightly as it sets, filling small gaps. It is often sold as waterproof. Clamp the joint while it cures, because the foam pushes parts apart, and clean off squeeze-out once it has set.
Two-part epoxy. Resin and hardener mixed together. It fills gaps, sticks to many materials and sets hard. It is used to rebuild rotten corners on window sills and door frames, and for repairs where the joint is not a perfect fit. Mix it exactly as the instructions say.
Construction adhesive. Sold in cartridges for a sealant gun. It grips well on rough timber, masonry and boards, but it is not a fine joinery glue.
Each brand's instructions say what timber, temperature and drying time the glue needs. Follow them, especially in cold or damp weather, when glues can take longer to cure.
What should glue not be relied on to do alone?
Glue is good at holding two close-fitting surfaces together. It is not a substitute for proper fixings where something carries weight, moves, or keeps people safe.
- Gates and gate posts. Wind and daily use pull on the hinges. Use proper hinges, screws or bolts.
- Fence posts and rails. A rotten post needs replacing. Our fencing page covers the trade, and the fencing cost guide explains what changes that quote.
- Decking, steps and handrails. These need the right fixings and framing. Decking costs covers that job.
- Anything above head height. Pergola beams, canopies and anything that could fall need fixings, not just glue.
A glued joint on these parts can look fine on the day and let go later. If you are unsure whether a joint carries load, ask a carpenter or joiner.
How do you get a strong outdoor joint?
- Start with dry, clean wood. Most glues need the wood surface free of dirt, old paint and loose fibres.
- Cut back to sound timber. Glue will not hold to rotten or crumbly wood. Remove it first.
- Check the fit. Dry-fit the parts first. Close-fitting joints suit PVA. Gappy joints suit epoxy or polyurethane.
- Clamp while it sets. Even pressure for the full time on the label gives the strongest joint.
- Add fixings where needed. Screws, dowels or brackets alongside the glue for anything that will be pushed or pulled.
- Finish the wood. Paint, stain or treat the timber once the glue has cured.
Sanding old timber makes dust. HSE's woodworking guidance says wood dust can cause serious health problems [S2]. Work outside where you can, and keep dust away from your face.
How do you use outdoor glues safely?
Some exterior glues, especially polyurethane and epoxy, carry hazard warnings. HSE explains that hazard pictograms, shown as a diamond with a red border, alert us to a hazardous chemical that might cause harm to people or the environment [S1]. If the tube or tin carries one, read the label and follow its safety advice, such as wearing gloves.
Keep glues away from children and pets, and do not let uncured glue wash into drains or ponds. Clean tools as the instructions say.
When is it a job for someone else?
Small repairs, such as a split arm on a garden bench or a loose trim, are often fine to do yourself. Call a professional when the wood is rotten, when the item carries weight or people, or when the repair is on a window or door frame you rely on to keep weather out.
Our carpenters and joiners pages cover timber repairs and outdoor joinery. Landscapers take on garden structures. Shed repair covers fixing a garden shed. Citizens Advice suggests getting written quotes from at least 3 different traders before you decide on one [S3].

Questions about exterior wood glue
Is ordinary PVA wood glue OK outside?
Standard interior PVA is not meant for wet conditions and can soften when it gets damp. Some PVA glues are sold for exterior use with a stated water resistance. Read the label and choose one made for outdoor joints if the wood will be rained on.
Can I glue a broken fence panel or gate?
Glue can help hold a split rail or loose joint, but on a gate or fence it should not be the only fixing. Screws, nails, brackets or new timber carry the load when wind and use pull on it. If a post or gate frame has rotted, it needs replacing, not gluing.
Do I need to paint or treat glued wood afterwards?
Usually, yes. The glue protects the joint, not the timber around it. Once the glue has cured, finish the wood with the paint, stain or treatment you would use anyway, so water does not get into the timber next to the joint.
Does QuoteZila check carpenters?
No. We don't check insurance, qualifications or registrations, so please check these yourself before you hire. You can report a quote or a business from your job page.
