The boiler condensate pipe, and who may work on it

Gas Safe's inspection sheet names the condensate discharge pipe, including its size, support and termination, as a check on a gas boiler. In Cheshire that pipe is not a DIY job: the person employed to work on the appliance has to be Gas Safe registered.

Named on the inspection sheet

The pipe this keyword points at is the one Gas Safe Register lists as the condensate discharge: size, support and where it terminates [S1]. The factsheet is about how Gas Safe's own inspectors visit a home, not a manual for householders [S1]. Use it to see that the pipe is part of a gas appliance check. Do not use it as permission to reroute anything.

Support matters in the list because a pipe that has come off its clips is still the engineer's item to judge [S1]. Termination matters because where the pipe ends is on the same line [S1]. Photograph the run from ground level, including where it leaves the wall, and stop there.

Registration, not a guess

On the HSE domestic gas FAQ, anyone employed to work on a gas appliance at home must be Gas Safe registered and competent for that work [S2]. If you suspect the appliance is unsafe, HSE says it is illegal to keep using it: turn it off and do not touch it until a registered engineer has checked it [S2]. Do not thaw, cut or extend the pipe yourself. Those steps belong to a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Gas Safe Register. QuoteZila is not affiliated with this organisation.

HSE strongly advises servicing appliances, flues and pipework at least annually by a registered engineer [S2]. Book that as a service, and mention the plastic pipe in the same request if you can see it.

A new boiler is a different visit from a look at the pipe

The GOV.UK booklet on replacements and repairs lists a new or replacement boiler as work a building control body needs to know about unless a competent person scheme installer certifies it, and it names Gas Safe Register for installation of gas appliances [S3]. A certificate of compliance should arrive within 30 days of completion when a scheme installer does that kind of work [S3]. GOV.UK's approval page says emergency repairs to a boiler or heating system do not need advance approval, and that rules still apply [S4].

What to write in the job

Say the make and model, whether the instructions are in the house, and whether the pipe is inside a cupboard. Citizens Advice still applies to the paperwork: a written quote from more than one trader, and a question about VAT [S5]. Taxable turnover over £90,000 in the last 12 months is the VAT registration line [S6]. For the person who attends, the Gas Safe check comes before the price comparison [S2].

Posting a job is not open yet

See heating engineers and plumbers. Plumber cost shows how a written price is read. Roof repair cost is a different trade, useful only as another example of comparing quotes.

This page is general information, not professional or legal advice. QuoteZila does not check Gas Safe, WaterSafe, NFRC, NICEIC or other registrations against the register on your behalf: look them up yourself.

This page follows the inspection sheet for the discharge pipe on a boiler, while what a condensate pipe is tells that pipe from an air-conditioning drip and also gives no repair steps.

Jobs you might post

These are examples, not taken from real job posts.

  • "Condensate pipe on a combi in Crewe. It has come away from two clips outside. I have not cut it. Gas Safe engineer please."
  • "Boiler in a cupboard in Nantwich. I want to know if the plastic pipe is still properly supported before a joiner builds a door."
  • "Boiler off in Sandbach after a smell. Leave the pipe alone until you have checked the appliance."

Questions about condensate pipes

What is the pipe the sheet is talking about?

Gas Safe Register's February 2026 consumer factsheet lists, under checks on a gas-fed boiler, the condensate discharge pipe together with its size, support and termination. The sheet does not give a chemistry lesson. If a white plastic pipe leaves the boiler and runs outside, say that in the job, and let the engineer confirm it is the discharge the sheet means. Do not cut it to see.

Can a general plumber alter it?

HSE says anyone employed to work on gas appliances in a domestic property must be a Gas Safe registered engineer and competent in that area of work. The competencies are on the back of the ID card. Check the person on the Gas Safe Register or phone 0800 408 5500. A joiner boxing the boiler in is not, by that sentence, doing gas work until they alter the appliance, the flue or the pipework. If the box will cover the pipe, ask the engineer first.

What should I have ready for the visit?

The factsheet asks for the manufacturer's instructions. Without them, the inspector may only be able to look, and may not run operational checks. Clear a path to the boiler that does not mean climbing. The sheet says inspectors will not go onto a roof, into a loft without suitable access, or after pipework hidden in a wall if getting to it would damage the house or be an unacceptable risk.

Does replacing the boiler change the rules?

GOV.UK lists a new or replacement boiler among examples of work to tell a building control body about, unless a competent person scheme installer certifies it. Installation of gas appliances is paired with Gas Safe Register on that booklet. You do not need advance approval for an emergency repair to a boiler or heating system, but GOV.UK says there are still rules you must follow. Ask the engineer which case your visit is.

Does QuoteZila check the businesses?
